That result tells you all you need to know about women's football. 8 competitive teams....what is the point?

Having agreed earlier in this thread that the women don't cheat like the men the Yanks however seem to have it down to a fine art, 3 dives in the first half alone, I suppose there's more money involved over there. The Argies weren't bad at it against Japan either

The pundits going on about how great it was without once mentioning that Thailand would have lost to an under 7s side

That result tells you all you need to know about women's football. 8 competitive teams....what is the point? Whilst I take your point, you could argue that the mens world cup has similar minnows & their attempt to increase the competition to (was it 48 teams) is not that much different. Granted we wouldn't see cricket scores like today, but there are similar mis-matches in the mens comp. FWIW, I'd be all for cut down competitions where the top 16, possibly 8 teams compete. Look at the cricket WC, 10 teams, round robin, then top 4. That's a nice straightforward competition where not one team can argue they got an 'easy group' etc. One of the only reason these tournaments now exist is the TV & betting markets. The longer the duration, the better deals FIFA etc. get...

The Germans should've got double figures against Brazil in the semi too but took their foot of the gas cos they felt sorry for the twats

The media have blown smoke up the arses of their play actors for far too long...

Luxemburg did OK last night v Ukraine and could have won. Ukraine beat Serbia 5-0 just 3 days earlier....you wont see that with ladies.

Worryingly though, Thailand are ranked 34 in the world (although they have less than 1000 registered players). They're ranked higher than our next opponents Argentina 🤔

That Thai goalkeeper was absolutely shocking. Has Hamer been coaching them? Would have been harder to miss than score past her. Not sure why the US had to celebrate every goal as if it was the one winning them the entire World Cup though. Imagine if they do win it, half the team would spontaneously combust!

They're ranked higher than our next opponents Argentina 🤔 Argentina who have been sleeping on their team bus after the AFA refused to pay for a hotel for them. That alongside Thailand's high ranking tells a whole story. Not that women's football is objectively bad and therefore will never be competitive, but that it's grossly underfunded and will only succeed in countries where it's deemed worth putting money into. It's why the USA and Canada are so high up in the rankings. Countries that either choose not to, or don't have enough money to fund women's sport properly are never going to be anywhere near, even in a country like Argentina in which football is far more steeped in their culture. Canada only got a national men's league lately ffs. Baffles me a fair bit that some on this thread consider the above to being the result of a lower quality of football, rather than the other way round.

It is evident that the format for the Ladies World Cup is wrong. Invite the World's too 8 teams and play a round robin to determine semi finals. Then, we can avoid the farce of last night's game.

Obviously there will be a massive gulf between the established first world teams with the facilities and infrastructure and the lesser emerging nations. Deliberately excluding them from taking part is hardly going to give them the incentive and experience to improve. Some may never have the population or backing to be serious contenders just like the men's game. It's not rocket science. You want a reasonable number of teams to keep it interesting but I'm glad the men's version wasn't extended more than it currently is.

So is the Olympics, see privately educated, well off, sponsored athletes. A gold medal in yachting?
