The rich football clubs gets richer and the poor football clubs get poorer Not a problem if you live within your means. And this, I am afraid, is the key. Would be interesting to see, if EVERY football club in the land was shown whether it is solvent or not, just how many would still be standing... Can't be many out there with a bank balance in the black? I'd guess that 70% of the Greedy League clubs would be in the clarts if the banks/creditors called in all of the debts right now, overnight.

No need to have a bank balance in the black. Most people with a mortgage are in the same boat, owing more than they have. But, and it is a big but, in most cases can afford to repay the required sums to keep it going and not having most of their repayments milked off to pay some other party.

The failure is all due to the EFL
What happened to 'fit and proper' tests for owners?
We should be concerned

Agree that the EFL are definitely at least partly at fault for this and the Bolton situations. Their fit and proper persons test is a load of bollocks, and how they could allow Steve Dale to take over at Bury without properly vetting him I have no idea. As for Bolton, honestly how does being banned from being a company director for 8 years and having multiple businesses going bust make you a fit and proper person to run a football club? Surely the EFL should have said from the start that if you've had any bans or other companies that have gone bust or anything else that should ring alarm bells, you're not going to be allowed to take over.

I know it has been mentioned already but reading the latest comments from Phil Neville about Bury I wonder if he would have been better being a little more thoughtful. Ranting now how disgraceful it is seem a little insensitive when you have been involved in the multi-million pound backing of a tinpot football club with no history (albeit from a major city).
Why when he and the others involved in the Class of 92 got involved with Salford didn't they look at Bury? The financial issues they face now would not have been anywhere near what has happened. If I were a Bury fan I'd be thinking...."thanks for that Phil...bit late now to care"

Surely the EFL should have said from the start that if you've had any bans or other companies that have gone bust or anything else that should ring alarm bells, you're not going to be allowed to take over. And there is the problem - fit and proper is a complete waste of time and a tick in the box based on a loose set of criteria. You have to think that Bury going out of the league suits Dale's agenda, he will get money back it's just a question of how much more or less he will get now they don't have their EFL share. The more you think about it the more shocking it is. People like Dale prey on failing businesses every day. What I don't think he considered is that a football club isn't like any other business in that you have a significant proportion of stakeholders/customers who are single mindedly passionate about their club and won't ever forget. I don't condone any unpleasant action or treatment he gets but I wonder if he factored in what this actually means to people. In Brighton, despite their success now, the bloke who sold the Goldstone from under them is still hated years on.

Comment by some EFL woman.
EFL executive chair Debbie Jevans says taking the decision to expel Bury from the Football League left her 'absolutely devastated', but insists 'we did everything that we could'
Crocodile tears if I ever saw them. Probably forgotten their name by now. Bury who? oh let me think.

I know there are other clubs to consider but this is no good for the game, expelling them should have been the last resort. Will they expel Bolton too so readily should they have no buyer? I suspect not.

So what happens to the players who are still on their books? Do they become free agents, or are the club allowed to sell them, to offset sale price against club debts?

Apparently a new bid has come in and the club are hoping the FL will have a re-think...
I'm torn on this. If a reprieve is granted and Bury are re-admitted, it'll be great for the fans and the town...
BUT it then suggests that "deadlines" aren't really deadlines at all. It gives the (still false, ultimately) impression that football league clubs won't be allowed to fail and will encourage clubs to continue to gamble beyond their means.

How on earth can the failure of Bury be fully down to the EFL. I agree they are not blameless in all this but on the one hand they are getting shit for letting the current/owner take over without full checks and on the other hand expected to draw things out indefinately. If by the deadline set (and extended) no one came forward with a clear plan to save Bury then not sure what else they could do.
