www.theguardian.com/football/2021/dec/23/government-pledge-1m-to-help-bury-fans-to-buy-back-gigg-laneMy mate is on the Finance Committee of AFC Bury who, despite having, I think, 5,000 members paying modest subscriptions and crowds at Radcliffe's ground of 1,500, don't merit a mention in the attached article. The good news for the old Bury club is that the Government is offering £1m from the Levelling Up fund (Bury must have at least one Tory MP then) to match private money and the aim is to buy Gigg Lane and turn it into a community facility. AFC Bury will put out a statement welcoming the news and offering to collaborate, but will wait for more details before voting on what to do next.

That's only an average of £200 each, done deal surely.

I didn't summarise what is happening here at all well. AFC Bury aren't part of this deal, but perhaps ought to be given the number of the old club's supporters that currently support them. Some wealthy fellow will get £1m of taxpayers' cash to help re-start the old club at Gigg Lane. Perhaps not surprisingly, both Bury North and Bury South are now represented by Conservatives. Levelling up's really taking off, isn't it?

My first ever Town away game was at Gigg Lane, an evening game that saw Town win 0-4 in the 1965-66 season. For that reason I’ve always had a bit of affection for the ground. Only been there for two other games. I really do hope I can see another league game there sometime in the future.

Golcar United play Bury in their last home game of the season, we hope to see some Town fans at the game if they aren't going to Hull that day!

In August 2021, a fans-backed group, Est 1885, was named among the bidders to buy the ground and club,[13] backed by an "anonymous benefactor willing to bankroll ambitions for a fans-led club".[14] On 22 October 2021, Est 1885 was given exclusivity to buy both the club and Gigg Lane.[15] On 23 December 2021, the UK Government, through the Community Ownership Fund run by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, pledged £1m towards the bid to buy back Gigg Lane.[16] On 7 January 2022, Est 1865 said contracts have been exchanged on a deal to buy the stadium, the club's name and memorabilia, with plans to resume competitive football in August 2022.[17] With the sale expected to be completed by the end of January 2022, Bury MBC agreed a financial contribution of up to £450,000 towards the costs of recommissioning Gigg Lane.

I have no idea who they were playing - we were visiting a family friend over there and the dads and kids went to the football. Would have been mid to late 70's. I really hope the ground is not left to rack and ruin for ever and that football will be played again there soon.

The second game I saw at Bury was a League Cup game against Nottingham Forest in Sep 1980; I’d only just returned to the UK from living in the States for 3 years and had just bought a new car and was keen to give it a run out. Forest won 7-0 and Bury missed a penalty!

Some great memories of Gigg Lane, still got the Enoch Powell badge I bought there in early 901!!. 6-0 followed by 0-6 was some turnaround. Mind you 4-4 followed by 3-3 was a close second. Good luck Bury, great little club.
