I keep reading about the Wigan and Luton games. The implication is that these were ‘easy’ games. Have you checked out the form tables? Name the teams who have a better record over recent games. It isn’t easy to find many. Those were our toughest games since lockdown and we played reasonably well against Forest, Reading, Birmingham and WBA. Too many on this forum seem to under-estimate just how difficult it is to stop a team in free fall from plunging further downwards. It was a Herculean effort to eke our points this season- I never dreamt when I was watching us last August that we would get to 30 points, never mind 50. I don't think it's because we thought they were easy, more that we didn't turn up to either game

Home games against teams who were in and around us. Even when 2-0 down in both we barely went forward in search of a way back into the game. To have a bad day at the office is one thing but to be so pathetic and lifeless twice in 3 weeks is shameful.

Something happened after the Luton home game which was not long after the debacle against Wigan. I have to admit that I gave up on renewing my season ticket after the Luton match but changed my mind when we beat WBA. Fickle ... you bet! Although I always seem to come sliding back somehow. Now that the Cowleys have gone I am actually beginning to warm to the possibility of the appointment of a coach who might actually be able to inject some new ideas into the squad. For me there were some real problems with the team which was a hangover from the Prem. First of all the confidence was zero and needed to be remedied. I really thought the Cowleys would change this but they didn't. Second the playing style seemed to remain very similar to what we had seen in the second half of our stay in the Premiership when we were ritually passing the ball backwards, sidewards and backwards again in the hope of avoiding giving the ball to the opposition. Fear and to an extent confidence was playing its part but we should never have been scared of having a go against either Wigan or Luton. The latter were bottom of the table and you are there for a reason. Finally what the Cowleys seemed unable to do was to convince me that the players were enjoying themselves on the pitch. This is easier to understand if you are not being picked every game say like a Steve Mounie, who for me whatever might say, is still a pretty decent centre forward who can make things happen if he is given the ball. To an extent the situation with Alex Pritchard says it all with the way things have gone for Town since he first signed. He came in against Bournemouth at home and instantly made an impact setting up Mounie for a goal. He had a good game that season down at WBA too although Wagner using him as the patsy all to often in games did not seem to do much for his confidence. This continued under Siewert and the Cowleys taking into consideration his injury problems too. Town have never got the best out of him, in my opinion and until we find someone who can he is going to remain an overpriced asset we cannot offload. There is another factor too which may or may not be playing on our Chairman's mind: the speed twins Diakhaby and Mbenza. They are coming back in a matter of weeks and are a real headache for the club unless ... a coach can get something out of them. Maybe the guy from Leeds can. Who knows. I know the Cowleys couldn't despite Diakhaby at least showing some signs of promise against Hull at home this season. It is a long shot I know but if the new man can lance that boil then they will have earned their corn alone. I think that has been a factor certainly. Although not a no.1 Carlos is respected in football as an first rate coach. I’d say it was a hopeless task were it not for that one performance against Hull where Diakhaby suddenly looked like a player. Never know why we literally saw that one glimpse. For a club our size maybe we need to get something out of Diakhaby/Mbenza/Prichard/Moonie/Bacuna. Im not sure he speaks French but he’s had experience with European players and some decent players at Leeds tbf. Look at the reaction from Leeds fans which is what I said it would be on Sunday. Make no mistake we are gaining a very skilled coach with a clear ethos and vision. He’s got a full preseason and a chairman who will back him where he can as he has with Cowleys. Exciting times nice again at the mighty Town.
