I wasn't exactly impressed with his loan spell here but 1m for a player with potential is not too much of a risk.
Could be a disaster or it could be a masterclass

Eiting, O'Brien, Hogg, Bacuna, Pritchard, Daly, Austerfield. Don't think we'll be getting any more in that position without outgoings.... I'd rather we got another winger as well as Willock.

These were my thoughts on Willock posted on the locked Transfer thread on 20th August.
Summer Transfer Window 2020
Let's put Willocks loan into abit of context.
He signed late on deadline day after Benfica recalled him from his loan spell at West Brom after not getting any first team minutes.
For obvious reasons he wasn't match fit when he arrived.
He played limited minutes in the first few games building up his match fitness. He made a brief cameo away to Derby, looked lively & nearly scored a late winner. Maybe if he was match sharp he might have buried the chance?
The next game away to Swansea he played the last 20 mins, again looked lively & made an assist for Mounie to score a tap in.
His first start was at home to Bristol City. He & ESR were excellent, he scored a cracker with a curling left foot effort but tired second half.
Charlton at home he looked decent again & although he didn't directly contribute to any of the goals that day I thought he did well before again tiring.
Leeds away after they scored he tried to get forward but had limited opportunities & the Leeds defence doubled up & kept playing him up blind alleys.
Then Covid lockdown hit which inevitably put him back to square one fitness wise.
The first few games after the restart were a disgrace, there's not one player that can hold their heads high. After that Cowley set-up ultra defensively & we managed afew 0-0 draws & another stinker against Luton. Willock was nonexistent in the minutes he played but did we play to his strengths? Looking for 0-0s it's tough to shine, especially when you're chasing match fitness.
West Brom for the first half hour was one of the best performances I've seen at town all season. His direct running kept the Baggies on the back foot & he scored a tidy volley. Again tired before being substituted.
Do I think he's showed glimpses of what he can do? Yes.
Would I have him here again next season? Yes.
Do I think we'll pay £2m for him? No.
Maybe another loan or a transfer fee with performance related add-ons/sell-on.
I do think he has the potential to be a good signing though.

Most seem to agree that he had a wonderful 30 minutes in the first half against West Brom. Equally most seem to agree he did next to nothing in the other matches he played. If we don't have much money I wouldn't be spending much on him. If we do have some money, why have we been waiting for Grant to go ?

I'd potentially have him back on another loan with option to buy if he looked good.
I doubt he's the answer to our attacking woes but if he developed well under Carlos' system he might be a shrewd signing. Unfortunately time would have to tell.

Seems like an obvious signing to me but if it’s happening what’s the delay, why has he not been here since day 1.
Wages can be the only issue.

Strange really - I posted weeks ago it was done so not sure what’s happened for the last few weeks I suspect terms may have changed etc but good to see it’s regained movement

Hmmm if the Daily Mail said it won't rain I'd look for my brolly but if it's true then it's a step in the right direction.

in the grand scheme of things £1m is a fair fee I guess but it's underwhelming - his loan wasn't hugely successful, but maybe CC has seen enough in the footage we have of him to suggest he can work with him.

Obvious potential and let's be honest, any flair or attacking player would be stifled by the tactics and system we've been churning out in recent years.

As we know to our cost you can pay 8-10x that price and get some right dross. At least we've had a look at him already and his 2 goals whilst on loan are more that the output of a couple of other players who featured on Saturday. All in all an OK signing I think, hopefully he is determined to get his career back on track and we could be the platform for him to show it.

only 22, a good investment..the lad is obviously ambitious to improve, turning down man city and spurs to go to benfica, then the step up to Town... Hope we don't destroy him like we did to Mounie'...a player I think we should have built around and backed with midfielders who pass to him and create opportunites....but that's another story..

You seem to rate him, and his attitude, a lot more than I do. I'm totally fed up with players who only show "glimpses".

No one looked good in those games after lockdown.
Not even Smith-Rowe. Willock is clearly a good player, we’d be daft to not take him if he’s available.

Don't know how some can moan at 1m for Willock.
The guy is decent. Confidence player who on his day will excite us.
Before lockdown he played well in the Bristol and Charlton games and look at the score.
Next game he plays well after lockdown we win again.
With CC attacking style (which we are yet to see) he should shine

So do you strongly disagree that he played well in other games than against West Brom or that he was constantly chasing match fitness or both? Yes I do - in most other matches, for me, he was mediocre but with, as you say, occasional glimpses. He certainly never struck me as a player who was busting a gut to prove how good he was. For me, and let's agree to differ, he was invisible for large parts of most matches. It's not moaning, merely stating an opinion on how a player played when he was here. Neither of us know whether that was because of issues with fitness, motivation, tactics or whatever but I could certainly understand why he never got near West Brom's team. Surely we need (now and last season) players with proven ability, players who, as a bare minimum, will get 6/7 out of 10 every week. From Bacuna to Pritchard, from Mounie to Kongolo I've had enough of having to rely on players who on their day/with the right formation/with the right service/if fitter/etc etc could be very good but there's always a reason why it's not their day. For whatever reason they have shown to be unreliable.

I personally think Willock would be a great buy at £1m. We only saw the best of him in spurts last year, but he’s obviously still young. I think he can score 10+ goals a season at this level. Maybe even this season if we sign him before Christmas....
