If more than one PL club wants to sign him, his signing on fee will run into millions. Then his wages on a 4 year contract on top of that. His signing on fee won’t run into anywhere near millions! If more than one club wants to sign him and the fee is fixed, then the signing on fee and/or 'loyalty bonus' is where the differences will be. This could easily be at least £2M. Unless he signed for Newcastle where the budget might not matter, his wages in the PL would probably be similar for similar level of PL clubs.

I'd say Blackburn are a very similar team to us (and the group of 9 or 10 that are in or in touch of the playoffs) except with a striker that will score 25-30 goals this season. That's the difference. I’d say Blackburn are one of 4 - 6 teams in the division who are much better than us. Bournemouth, Cov, Fulham, QPR? WBA? are the others Middlesborough, Stoke and Sheff Utd, just to mention 3, will all finish above us. I'm sure there will be a couple of others as well. I have us 13th, which is much higher than I thought before the season started. If I'm correct, year on year, that will still be progress.

The original point was “overnight” which suggests immediately. I understand that he’d be rolling in it long term but to say he’d be a multimillionaire OVERNIGHT was way off the mark. Not way off the mark. A contract that promises to pay x over y that amounts to several million makes you a multimillionaire. You do not have the liquidized cash at your disposal, but you could certainly borrow against that contract if you so wished, as you are definitely going to get paid the full amount. A promise of future earnings isn’t an overnight reality though. I understand it would be in the fullness of time, but not paid by the time he woke the following morning!

Suffice to say hed Wake up with a contract which promised to pay him £Ms more by the end of his career than his current one. Which is guaranteed. How he chooses to spend it is not really the point is it.

Correct, how he spends it is irrelevant, but whether he spends it is highly relevant as you are not a millionaire on the basis of what you spend or earn - only what you have.

Anyway, who’s made a point of how he chooses to spend it?

How he chooses to spend it is not really the point is it. Correct, how he spends it is irrelevant, but whether he spends it is highly relevant as you are not a millionaire on the basis of what you spend or earn - only what you have. And what he would have is whopping signing on fee and a piece of paper promising to pay him millions. Which is more than he has now. He may save it or he may waste it.But he will get it. It's a figure of speech. We all (well all but 1) knew what was meant.

Only below us (probably) because they now have games in hand. But likely to be to our advantage that we have played ours when we did loner term.

I wasn't impressed with LoB in the Blackpool game, his passing was pretty shocking, not for the first time.
I can't see him going next month, he needs more development with us.

Most are decent teams on their day but wouldn't describe any of them as 'much better' than us other than Fulham & Bournemouth. The table doesn't lie after half of a season and we are in 6th (may not be after games in hand) but we are well in the mix of playoff chasers as it stands. Swansea & Luton are strange shouts, what have they shown over half a season other than being well below us in the table to support being much better than us?

You could spend a big slice damn quick & never be anywhere near a millionaire. ahhh, but you could get a mortgage against that contract and buy a multi million pound house.. You say that but it isn't as easy as it sounds. My mate is a mortgage advisor and he has dealt with a ex town player. After he left us and got his new club he was refused a mortgage. Said players missus got the right hump Saying he is on £xxxx a week how can you reject him? The banks simple answer was... The next game he gets a career ending injury... After his 3 year contract who then covers his £xxxx a month payments? He's actually dealt with a few celebs sports persons and similar kind of problems. Today you're famous, tomorrow you're not kind of thing. So they need huge deposits. Obviously some it isn't a problem. Some it is regardless of celeb status not many seem to have hard cash sat doing nothing. I know the player and the amounts involved but won't divulge on here.

I'll be honest, I rate the lad but if offered 15m I'd likely sell. With the right recruitment you could improve the side significantly with that cash. That is only if we had assurances that the majority of that money would be used to improve the squad and not going straight to pay off Hoyle (I'm not trying to start the old Hoyle argument again, just staying).

What on this planet makes you think we would invest any of that? Its pure madness. We have a team of free transfers and cheap signings. We will never replace O Brien with 10, 15 or 20 million and we are 6th. We should be keeping our best players.

Why would you sell him? He's the heartbeat of the team and unless we get an offer we or indeed he cant refuse then i for once am with big ern. We want to be adding to what we have in what in my opinion is a mediocre league this year again. Staying free of injuries and adding a touch of additional quality and top 6 is surprisingly achievable imho.....unlikely but as ever we need to aspire to be the best we can be.
