Hopefully have a better idea after todays game I'm not sure we will, regardless of how it goes. A bit of fitness, an opportunity to try things out etc, but little if any indication of how the season will go imo. I seem to recall Jan Siewert winning all his pre-season friendlies, as an example. A few competitive fixtures & a closed transfer window might give us a better idea. On paper though, I have to say I'm not confident. GK: Leutwiler & Hologram out; Nicholls in. Squad improved.LB: Brown out; Ruffels in. Squad improved.RB: Duhaney out; Turton in Squad improved.CB: Schindler, Elphick, Stearman & Keogh out; Colwill & Pearson in. Jury is out. DCM: No ins or outs. No change.CM: Eiting out; No replacement yet. Squad - and first team - weakened.AM: Pritchard out; Brown in (returned from loan). Squad improved, but not significantly.LW: No ins or outs. Thomas looks ready to step up as cover for JK though. Squad improved.RW: No ins or outs. No change.CF: Phillips (loan), Niasse & Sanogo out; Rhodes in. Campbell another year older. Jury is out. Some areas of weakness either made weaker with Eiting yet to be replaced or problems from last season inadequately addressed (Brown will probably be better than Pritchard, but the fact Peterborough didn't want him in this division does not provide much hope). There are areas of genuine improvement (I think Nicholls will prove to be the most important signing - forcing Schofield to play through poor form helped nobody), but I'm expecting this season to be a stronger division, with only Derby looking significantly less well equipped than us for the coming season as things stand. Moving forward, it seems likely that at least 1 (& probably 2 or more) of Toffolo, o'Brien, Koroma & Pipa seem likely to leave. Mbenza & Bacuna, the club make no secret that they're actively trying to sell. How many of them leave & who comes in to replace should provide a clearer picture.

We actually need starting 11 improvement as well as squad improvement.

Improvement for me would be:
Strength in defence and a significant improvement in goals conceded The desire to compete in every game - no accepting defeat as unavoidable outcome Building on the promising play we showed at times, primarily, in the first half of last season Being out of the relegation dog fight and comfortably in mid table Hard decisions taken on our young pro's, we can't afford to carry players who are unlikely to be successful
That for me isn't a particularly high bar to aim for.
Until I see a competitive game I won't make a judgement on where we are. Looking now I think we are a couple of genuine quality additions to really push us on.
As for Carlos, the jury is very much out.

As has been pointed out above.
We really do need a creative midfield player - this is a glaring void in our squad and I hope the club are working to address this over the next few days.
