Its was definitely the first time I'd ever seen the word miscellaneous. It was there twice every issue, likes and dislikes. I read those religiously but couldn't pronounce it or knew what it meant. Eventually I went and asked my dad. And he didn't know either;-) I must admit I can't remember his explanation.

Long sleeved shirts.. No one seems to have those now. All short sleeves with those lycra things underneath. Every player wearing black boots... except maybe Alan Ball. Goalies wearing green and the same shorts and socks as the rest of the team. Silky wingers not wearing shin pads. That awkward moment when you get in the ground only to see someone is standing where you stand, leaning on your bit of stanchion... like they dont know thats your spot. My mam worked in a football boot place in her early teens and I'm sure she said Alan Ball was on of them that had personalised boots. Came in to do the signature for them to replicate and apparently was a right arrogant prick, treating the staff like dirt on his shoe. She was born in 56 so would have been approaching the 70's when she worked there, but can't fully remember the brand, maybe Mitre? Dunno where the factory was she worked at, but was when she lived on Brook Street, Heckmondwike.

Great thread, could have liked each post a dozen times.
The Town cafe breakfasts were something to behold, including the free items that dropped out of the ‘chef’s’ string vest.
The corner shop opposite the cafe, although a long time ago, there was never a huge queue when you were buying a can of pop or whatever.
I joined St John’s ambulance as well. A fringe benefit being getting into the games for nowt, occasionally going in your duffel coat or parka, so that when they let you in the ground, you could just hide your uniform and join the crowd on the terraces… 😀
A glorious curvature to the Leeds Rd pitch.
Corner flags that were not H&S conscious.
Fred Tetlows and the old mitre sports factory.
Boy we’re getting old(er)…

Not as tactical in them days, 4 - 4 - 2 was the norm, there's the goal go and score. England v Italy last night, what a load of boring passing tactical stale mate football. 4 - 4 - 2 ? You youngsters. Back in the proper days it was 2 - 3 - 5 Which always worked a treat on Championship Manager and earlier Football Manager, think it confused the game engine. Bastards have fixed it now though lol

Thanks overtonterrierspirit and Tinpot that's probably the one she worked for, just remember her saying it was in Huddersfield and he was a wanker lol A bit of a premature thank you there I suspect. If she lived in the great township of Hecky she probably worked at the World famous Coop Boot company www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/how-local-bootmaker-helped-stanley-13814683Brook street is a stones throw from where the factory was. One of my best mates (born in 1954) lived in the same street, another, dead now unfortunately, (probably same age as your mum) worked at the boot factory too. - what a coincidence.

artysid you're very possibly right. I'm sure she said Mitre, but as she was only 15/16 the one closer to home with no commute is probably the more likely. I'll have to ask her when they get back from holiday, her and dad's anniversary tomorrow, she's Town (Hecky lass through and through) he's L***s from Wakefield. Was "forced" to follow mam's side thankfully as she had brothers and my dad's family had no interest in football, hence L***s fans

Mileta Sports Ltd who originally made sportswear have been operating on Spen Vale Street, Heckmondwike since 1973, but I have a vague recollection that Mitre owned/operated the factory prior to that (I know they were founded in Huddersfield) There was also the CWS Boot Company (Goliath) on Brunswick street, Heckmondwike but they tended to be more industrial/safety footwear.

Speaking of mitre footballs, I seem to remember saving up green shield stamps for one. I think they stopped doing them just as I got close to being able to afford one.

Bloody hell, it's no wonder Hecky has been so well known for manufacturing in the past, didn't know there were so many football boot factories!
Just texted my mam so I'll find out for sure soon lol

My son briefly played up there for Linthwaite and it's still exactly the same.

COOP deffo made football boots too as the snippet I posted suggest. My friend who died was a football boot designer.

His father used to do all the sign-writing for the advertising boards for both Leeds Road and the John Smiths, and he also looked after the match officials on game day too.
