Only thinking about Sugg Sports the other day 😁 When I was at school (late 80s) all the lads had miniature sports bags for pencil cases. My pencil case was a miniature Sugg Sports bag. Black with gold writing I think.

With all this talk of sports shops, I used to get loads of stuff from O'Neills in Brooks Yard - just around the corner from Woods music shop.
And the sports shop at Marsh whose name escapes me, but was run by a bloke from Mirfield who played local football into his 60s.

Was he called Paul or something? Yep, Paul Sturgeon. www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/soccer-player-paul-sturgeon-clocks-11293197

Long sleeved shirts.. No one seems to have those now. All short sleeves with those lycra things underneath. Every player wearing black boots... except maybe Alan Ball. Goalies wearing green and the same shorts and socks as the rest of the team. Silky wingers not wearing shin pads. That awkward moment when you get in the ground only to see someone is standing where you stand, leaning on your bit of stanchion... like they dont know thats your spot. My mam worked in a football boot place in her early teens and I'm sure she said Alan Ball was on of them that had personalised boots. Came in to do the signature for them to replicate and apparently was a right arrogant prick, treating the staff like dirt on his shoe. She was born in 56 so would have been approaching the 70's when she worked there, but can't fully remember the brand, maybe Mitre? Dunno where the factory was she worked at, but was when she lived on Brook Street, Heckmondwike. I work with a bloke who played for Exeter under Alan Ball. He won't hear a word against him, always had time for the Grecian fans, absolutely lives him. He had issues, he was a serious drinker probably an alcoholic.

A big 45 minute clock on The TV that said by virtue of a bit sticking out between ten or was it fifteen minute intervals when someone had scored - and also a big sloping BBC sign that was accompanied by a massive ‘R’ when it was a replay of anything important on the field of play !

The TV gantry, and being impressed with how those huge cameras used to look. Managing to get to see the clips from the club, with the VHS timing ticking away at the bottom of the screen.

Gerson, Tostao, Rivelino, Jairzinhio, Alberto, Felix, Pele Haan, Kroll, Repp, Neaskens, Cruyff, When World Cups were exciting. Crackling sound on the commentary from Mexico. And the blurred pictures from far away lands? Was the same with any genre of TV Programmes from America, so much so that I foolishly always expect it to be blurred in real life! Am fairly well travelled Europe-Wide to most main Cities and Popular Sunshine Holiday Staples but never had the pleasure of USA as yet and still have this misguided expectation of it all being a bit fuzzy as you walk down the Airplane Steps and seeing Starsky And Hutch driving through empty cardboard boxes in New York Back Alleys! Also back to South American Football remember being mesmerised watching the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, Kempes / Peru Kits et al, the Ticker Tape welcomes from the Crowd (followed by piss poor English League Crowd copycat attempts soon after) …..and the constant sound of Crickets / Grasshoppers to add to the sound experience….or was that just me?

Yes that was a brilliant World Cup. Kempes and Luque up front, Ardiles etc. what an atmosphere Argentina walked out into.

Playing Football every daylight hour in the School Holidays, never giving a thought to TV or anything else, pre-Internet of course.
2 Misses leading to a Goal Kick and In Goals was our game of choice recreating TV Commentators of the day and we had the benefit of living close to a few Secondary Schools so took full advantage of their pitch and goals. Very rarely we got the ultimate where the School had left their Goal Nets up overnight and that was always a golden session!
When we had more numbers, ‘English’ was the game, where you could only score via Header or Volley. That progressed to a more brutal version ‘Docker English’ at Secondary School early 80’s when the guy in goals when the end of Break / Dinnertime Bell went was deemed the loser and took a right kicking from all the other participants!
Used to avoid any shooting near the end of Playtime so as not to put yourself in with a chance of being the ultimate loser.
Summer automatically Tennis and Cricket took the main stage, playing Tennis on local hired Park Courts.

If there was only a few of us it would be “3 and in “ Score 3 and your turn to be Clemence or Shelton. Only 2 of us it would be “Slam” when some poor person in an end terrace house would have to listen to a ball been kicked incessantly against their wall. Ultimate would be a full scale game at Greenhead Park. Never a thought for anything else - just played football all the time.

I’m sure Tony Galvins brother had a sports shop, was it in Moldgreen? He did and my Games Teacher at school was Gerry Quinn, (also former manager of Emley FC) cousin of the Galvins and was always in awe when he got FA Cup Final Tickets when Spurs were there. We probably know one another then… I last bumped into Gerry a few yrs back, he wasn’t that much older than us as kids, I seem to recall that it was his first job after teacher training college? He also arranged for us to visit White Hart Lane on the annual ‘London trip’. I wouldn’t have realised who Tony Galvin was at that point, but I assume it was him that showed us round, it would have been a couple of yrs before he became a regular in the first team at Spurs. Much like Leeds Rd, those grounds in the late 70’s and early 80’s had so much history and ‘smells’ in them.

I know it’s football, but did anyone else do the ‘3 bat handles’ thing to settle a dispute for street cricket?

Yeah I was only thinking the other day how you'd regularly hear cars around the estate playing the first line of 'dixie' really fast. (oh I wish I was in the land of cotton). Then you'd also hear that at the match.

Gerry is still watching Town week in week out. A regular on the Marsh Lib Fun Bus (or train if necessary) to many away games(drinking sessions). I respect his football opinion above most of the folk I know. (gledholt terrier notwithstanding 😜)

I know it’s football, but did anyone else do the ‘3 bat handles’ thing to settle a dispute for street cricket? Yup. Also, if there was only two of you playing down the garden driveway, it was out 'caught' if you nicked one onto the garage door without bouncing. You were also able to claim a catch either one hand off the wall or one hand of the floor too, or the better players could bat for hours.

Got to know Gerry socially after School Days and we will always have a good catch up when we see each other less frequently now. His Son, Paul has continued the Family Managerial Tradition with high level local league sides and his Mother’s Dad was of course Ian Greaves. Wembley Tour was also one of the option choices of several London Tourist Sites and I usually paired it with Madame Tussaud’s and had my photo taken with ‘big star celebrities’ of the day.
