Somebody writing in the Telegraph was saying that the rest of the World has now caught up with the bigger teams... how right he was. I'd ordinarily agree, but Costa Rica are ranked higher than the Czech Republic. Would they have shipped 7? Iran is higher than Sweden. Would we put 6 past them? In fairness, that might be a result of their population numbers. I agree the gap is getting closer - but not caught up. But the truth is, we will never see anything like this today:

Canada deserve to be leading. Great to watch to be honest. Some real pace and energy.

Canada need to get in front because Belgium won't be this bad in the second half.

Speaking of Rankings - Canada(41), the best team in North America as TownOhiofan states are 28 spots below Mexico (13), 25 below USA (16), and 10 below Costa Rica (31), each team they despatched in qualifying - Heck, they are even below Scotland.

If its deemed the defending player plays the ball backwards under duress etc then the forward player is offside, in this case belgian under no pressure plays a shit pass, backwards. That's another shite rule then, surely every player on the field is trying to put the opposition 'under duress'. Lots of last touches off a defender etc, if they are not deemed a definite attempt to play the ball back then the forward is offside.. Its hard to legislate for deflections etc..? In this case it was a definite pass backwards under no pressure at all?

Belgium seemed lucky there. Only watching snippets and on a small screen, but at least one more decent penalty shout?

Ferdinand Alex Scott Kompany
What a tedious and charisma-free panel this is.

Finishing aside, Canada have had a brilliant first half, some excellent build up play.

Even a miss hit might have done it for them.. Belgium, incredibly average and far too old at the back...

Damn. That was fun. Canada has a bright future. They have a new domestic league. It's not very good but it has sprouted up more academies there. It's night and day with football there than it was 10 years ago. Pitches everywhere and a lot of excitement.

Canada deserved far more out of that game.
As someone mentioned above, the gap in quality has been shrinking for a while. A lot of these sides are technically good teams, they just lack a couple of superstars with composure in the right parts of the pitch.

Really looking forward to Canada's other games, I really enjoyed how they played. Just shows you have to take your chances when you get them.

Great effort by Canada but missing someone who can finish, don't see Belgium getting far in the competition defence will get found out

They showed exactly why in general top strikers cost the most and earn the most. Done everything apart from win that game

Lineker, you spoon! He was referring to the center field huddle. Hardly given enough credit by the goons in the box, Canada tonight. Very entertaining to watch and totally deserved the win. At least Martinez was able to see that. I hope they manage to get through, they'll certainly give Croatia and Morocco a game.

Yeah, they lacked the composure at crucial times, but lots of comments about looking leggy tonight as the game wore on. I didn't see that, perhaps they became a bit more rash in their decision making as the game wore on. It's not like non-league v Premier League in the FA Cup. Most of the Canadian side play in the top leagues in Europe. Buchanan looked very useful. Impressed.

Belgium got away with one there to say the least! Think any side there with a half decent front line would have hammered them tonight.
Canada's pressing was superb. Just that final pass or shot was awful.

Watched Spain V Costa Rica yesterday, the most one sided game you will ever see. Spain 82% possession 17 shots, CR no shots, not even a corner, I can't remember a worse performance from a team at the World cup finals, so bad 7-0 flattered them. Nice easy start for Spain who may well be a very good team, hard to say when the opposition is totally shite but I think they will beat the Germans in the next game.
