The guy who deals with match tickets at Tavistock is called Stubbs.. Jeez oh - amazing coincidence that one... No ‘doubt’ he will have / still does smoke cigarettes - He will know how to dispose of the waste residue of them with a name like that ! 😉

Surely there was an exclamation mark at the end of the announcement?

With the money from her accident She bought herself a mobile home So at least she could get some enjoyment Out of being alone No one could say that she was left up on the shelf It's you and me against the World kid she mumbled to herself When the world falls apart some things stay in place Levi Stubbs' tears run down his face

Not a good look for Barnsley Seriously Barnsley can't scrape 11 players together. Do what most teams do and play a load of kids

I think the last 2 pre seasons I've done were Barnsley and before that Eastwood Town which is going back a bit as I remember Alan Lee doing a half. Not sure about Barnsley, more recent but can't recall season I'm sure someone will put me right. Don't think it was after we'd gone to prem I think by then we were doing preseasons abroad? Pre-season friendlies at Barnsley? It depends how far you want to go back. The most recent was I think, without looking it up, when we were in the Prem. The Under-23s went to Curzon Ashton on the same day, captained by Jason Davidson. We won 1-0. I was one of a few Town fans there and the only soul behind one of the goals. Our keeper clawed a header out of the top corner and I got my first touch of the ball since my first ever - a friendly at Cheltenham of all places - when Chris Lucketti hammered the ball towards us and I managed to tip it out of the ground. My boys asked me 'why did you do that, Dad?' My mate once handed the ball back to Pat Jennings at Leeds Road and he said 'thanks, son'. Anyway, I recall that we lost 3-0 at Barnsley in Mr Warnock's first season. We went swimming at the Metrodome before the 7.30pm kick-off and the kids got plenty of touches of the ball at the open end of the ground. Town were a division below Barnsley and were terrible that night and for many months afterwards. My first visit to Oakwell was in August 1972, a 3-0 win and a first sighting of Alan Gowling, who scored I think. No touches of the ball. At that time the ground might not have changed since it was first built, or rather fashioned out of the slagheaps. A year later we were visiting such eyesores regularly. Anyway, I'm now firmly in Bassingham's camp on pre-season friendlies, although I'm a total hypocrite having failed to persuade my wife to visit Devon and Cornwall for a week's holiday. More important to discuss, perhaps, is who's had a touch of the football at a Town match? Someone must have the play-off final ball from 2012.

Following the pre-season of 1994-95, Neil had the players 'almost too ready' for the coming season, after 8 wins and 4 draws at the end of the season before. What price a repeat at a different seaside of the first game of that season, (followed, almost inevitably, by a defeat in the first home game)? We didn't lose away from home until bonfire night when Iain Dunn was hit in the face by a firework.

Step-father was pole-axed by a shot at Scarborough once. His mates pi$$ed themselves laughing so he got up and decked one of them. And...The best thing I ever saw was on TV, possibly Soccer AM, where the ball went into the crowd and some wag, quick as a flash, whipped out a pen, autographed the ball, then chucked it back. Brilliant spin on the usual way of things.

Thanks for the post araucaria re Barnsley pre season. My first thought turned out to be correct then, it was when we were in Prem. I remember the club had set aside a field on a slope not far from ground for visitor parking ( I'd always found backstreet parking on previous league visits over the years).

We went in the train but when we got back to the station the last train had gone so we had to get the last bus back to Huddersfield, back in the days when buses used to run between the towns and after 9pm in general. We had to walk home from Waterloo depot, as that's as far as it was going. Pre Internet days and all that to check train times, although it was more probably a case of youthful foolishness.

More important to discuss, perhaps, is who's had a touch of the football at a Town match? Someone must have the play-off final ball from 2012. I haven’t had a touch at a Town match as I’m mostly in The Riverside Upper near to the centre line and the two chances that I did have in The Kilner Bank in The Premier League v WBA (Win) and Everton (loss) the ball never came near where I was sitting - However... ! In ma very first Highland League Match (now an annual event) supporting The mighty Clachnacuddin FC v Fort William and Clach 2-3 down to a bottom of the table Fort’ the Ben Nevis Men, under pressure were kicking the ball as far away from the 500 or so spectators as possible to naturally waste time - even outta the quaint little Grant St. Park was better again... So after munching my half time pies and bovril in the 154 seater ‘grandstand’ it was time to head around to with the Diet Irn Brewery bottle to ‘The Wineshed’ behind the goal at The Benula Road end and whilst on route the Fort player boots the ball out at pace at about 6’ 6” just the ideal height for me to catch which I did with aplomb - (watch out Lee Nicholls if I was younger !! ) - and low and behold who seen me catching it but The Lilywhites manager Jordan McDonald’s two daughters who I’d met outside the ground with their lovely mum Donna before the match and had a good half hour blether with them before the chairman came to open up the ground for the players and officials and I got another half hour in The Nip Inn before the turnstiles opened... The girls said - “You’d be a good goalie for Clachnacuddin” and I chuckled with laughter saying - “Aye Maybe 35 years ago girls” - So that’s ma ball catching claim to fame at an official (ish) match - and sometimes the ‘wee’ matches are the ones that folks derive great memories from ! 😊 NB : Just as well that I flung the ball very swiftly back to Clach’s Conner Bunce to get on with proceedings as The Lily’s duly equalised and got a 4-3 win with the last kick of the ball at The Wineshed End as well ! - What a truly brilliant match and fantastic weekend that was indeed ! 👍

That was well into the tail end of the season, the game at Stoke which RJ watched whilst NW was at a NY Jazz Club. The one where, after the game, RJ seriously questioned the sagacity of taking on the job!
