There's a guy behind me who seems to lump on Matos and Nicholls to get booked every game. He was fuming on Wednesday with Matos smashing through players and ref seeming to just let him get on with....a Town fan shouting, "thats three times now ref, BOOK HIM" is quite amusing to witness, with lots of confused faces staring at him...and then massive celebration when Nicholls gets booked late on! What are the odds on Matos getting a yellow?? Must be about 1-20 on! ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Refs don't like booking him for some reason. This is when most of our players get booked for fuck all

I think it's close between him, Nico and Super Stevie Harper. But it's damn hard to choose. All very good keepers but Id take Nicholls over the other two. Best keeper ive seen play for town. Pity that you didn’t get to see Terry Poole. Nicholls can be great, but he’s too variable. I thought he was culpable for a couple of goals against Southampton and Hull’s second goal today was due to an insufficient or delayed reaction by Nicholls. He’s not been quite the same since his double concussion.

There's no doubt he should have saved that first one. A weak left hand on it. But his two saves mid week were world class. Just in that season under Carlos he seemed flawless. Did the shoulder injury he had last year take something out of him?

Best GK season i've seen at town by some distance in my 30 odd years but a shadow of that for us this season. Victim of his own success maybe but he has let in more than a few stinkers this season.
Big voice in the dressing room and I dont think he shys away and hides in the box but his shot stopping has been poor this season.
Have confidence he will get back to where he was, if we can keep Helik and Balker and actually get them both fit in the same team it will protect him more.

His comments in the programme yesterday very interesting - working with Neil Bennett since Moore and co left, he says Neil Bennett letting him be himself again. Sounds like he didn’t enjoy it under DM.
Was class v Sunderland and yes should have saved the first yesterday - I think he will get back to his high standards soon

Totally agree, 3 shots on target yesterday 2 goals conceded. That sort of ratio has been very common over the last few months. Expect better from a quality keeper.

I’ve always put goalkeepers in to 3 categories that over a whole season are:
- one who costs you points - one who is competent - one who wins you points
We are used to seeing Nicholls be a keeper who wins us points and expectations are very high. His standards have dropped but he still sits in the middle category for me - hopefully he gets back to his best but still a decent keeper even when not at top of his game.
I have every confidence he will get back to his best, especially when has a settled back 4 in front of him.
ps…seen plenty of town keepers in my time who sit in the ‘cost us points’ category 😭😭😭

He isn't as consistent this season but I don't think it's any coincidence that his form may have dropped slightly and that he's had a handful of different coaches to work under since Clem left.

I’ve rewatched the goal on town’s YouTube and I feel people are being harsh on him saving the first goal. It looks like he doesn’t get a strong hand to it, but a lot of keepers wouldn’t have even had the athleticism to get a hand on it.
Because the player has his back to goal, Nicholls can’t set up on which way he’s going to go. He just spins around and smashes it and it’s not straight at him.
What you’re seeing is a keeper that has set incredibly high standards at this level and now isn’t quite at that level consistently, therefore under more scrutiny.

It would be better for him if we didn't have goalkeeping coaches in and out through revolving doors. Having known a keeper who had 16 years in the professional game, he said after he became a first team regular he did his own training schedule, the coach worked with the young lads. The only thing Nichols has to work on with the team is set piece defending tactics and playing out from the back. No goalkeeping coach on earth can be responsible for a weak wrist/hand moment or the rush of blood advance. They all make errors the best make less than the others.

Nicholls can't be blamed for either of those goals. The first one went through a crowd of bodies and as you say he did well to get a hand on it and if anybody wants to lay the blame at somebody's door for the second, then blame Rudoni for losing his man/failing to deal with the cross.

Think he should have done better with both goals yesterday. We all have off days he has saved many more points that he has lost.

Blame giving away a free kick on halfway against a bloke running sideways. Blame all for not getting out when we first cleared it. Other than one run through the only danger to us all game were two dominant centre halves and with a minute to go we gave them the chance to load our box and put the ball in there. Dumb, jockey him keep the ball in play, he was only going sideways. He might give it to us, he might put it out of play and then we may have a chance to get it forward. If he keeps it, goes back and the keeper arses about with it, we have a point from a very tough game. Same old errors that cost us time after time.😔
