He was a flawed character for sure. Really nice bloke once you get to know him, has gone through a lot of shit in his life. Received terrible racist abuse when he played for Town in the mid-1970s. No doubt about that.

I've actually been in his company when someone has been racist towards him. He just smiled at the bloke and didn't react.

A bit before my time but I remember Peter Hart captaining Town in the late 70’s, Noel Brotherton playing for Blackburn against us and Neil McNab at Bolton and then coming to us towards the end of his career.

I think Newton ended up in prison for a period. He left for Chesterfield. Something to do with driving, is all I can remember.

I was at the Semi final (v WBA) & the final v Spurs where the attendance seemed to me to be well over 20K. A bleak time for Town fans although we didn't get relegated that 1st season in division 3 with young Paul Garner a 1st team regular.......Strangely I always remember it was around the same time as the IRA M62 coach bomb & Terry Jacks number one, 'seasons in the sun'.

I can't remember what happened to him, did he get a bad injury because I've just checked Wiki and he only played 39 times for Town and 71 games for Darlington, not the career I thought he would have.

Was anyone at the England vs. Town game that took place later in 1974? Yes, it was my first match... i was 7 yrs old. I can remember my dad taking me and my brother down Halifax Rd to get the bus and then threatening to take us home if we didnt behave as must have been naughty on the way! Next things i remember is sitting up in the stand and being in awe at the floodlit pitch - a wow moment! I remember it was a 2-2 draw and i couldnt make my mind up who i wanted to win so cheered all the goals. My main memory is Lloyd Maitland flying down the left wing terrorising their defence... if i'm right he scored both goals?

Was anyone at the England vs. Town game that took place later in 1974? Dick Taylor played one half Town and the other half for England. I remember Butch Wilkins playing.

I have no recollection of the England came but I was dependent on my Dad in those days. What date was it? If it was in the summer he'd never take us to Leeds Road, it was the cricket season to him and we'd be off following Yorkshire in the John Player League.

You may or may not be aware that we are approaching the 50th anniversary of when Town's youth team became not only the very first Town team to reach the F.A. Youth Cup final but also the first Yorkshire team to do so. Famously, the 2nd leg of the final was played at Leeds Road in front of over 15,000. They lost 1-0 in extra time but that feat has never been bettered. Did anyone go? Or have any memories of the game? my friend robin wray was the coach and two very good games and the team did themselves proud

Correct!! Haunted us for years and usually scored. A bloody good footballer, sadly missed. And the poor chap's surname was misspelled in the programme... What a talented player Brotherston was.Take it this was Noel Brotherston who was a player with Northern Ireland... We only had Irish TV when I started supporting football and his unique surname stood out in the many, many live matches we used to see on BBC Northern Ireland and Ulster TV in what was a very talented and hardworking Northern Ireland team, that won Home Championships and regularly qualified for World Cups back then... Brotherstone was one of many talented players in that team !

For Fcuk’s sake - Just done a Wikipedia check to see what he is up to and to my shock and horror he died of a heart attack aged just 38 back in 1995... Bloody Hell - Just goes to show that fit sports athletes like him aren’t immune from the call of The Grim Reaper - ☹️ Another one that I actually do remember passing also in 1995 was the former Clydebank, Rangers and Motherwell winger Davie Cooper... RIP to both of them...

Lloyd Maitland thats all I remember First game I played in the open age Sunday League, after finishing with the U16's, I had this little black bloke trying to cripple me without actually managing to connect. He ended up walking off with about 10 minutes to go. Didn't know at the time it was Maitland, he got sine die not long after.I hated playing against him, I thought he was a devious, dirty bastard. Which he was. But when I moved to the Wappy I saw what he had to contend with every single game. He'd basically resorted to getting his retaliation in first, before they'd take turns in trying to 'do' him. He never shirked a confrontation, that's for sure - especially up at Holt Avenue playing against Sikh and Destroy. He was still playing for the Wappy in the early '90s as I was in the same side and didn't pack in Sunday football 'til '92/'93ish. I remember a cup semi against Moldgreen Con that went to a second replay (at what was then ICI), before we got beat by Bradley Rangers in the final up at Brook Motors. Lloyd was definitely still playing in that side.

Like I said, I'd no idea who it was, just seemed some bloke getting to the end of their career. It was a pitch somewhere up the main road going through Oakes.

He might have been the inspiration for Brian Glover's character in Kes because we used to play on at football until his team was winning.

I'd just started working in London and went to the first leg at White Hart Lane. I was immensely proud of our lads who played really well before a big crowd and celebrated Bob Newton's equaliser modestly. It's a measure of how times have changed though. Four blokes had obviously clocked me as a Town fan (even though I was wearing no colours and was street wise re: being an away fan.) They followed me onto the tube and persisted even when I changed carriages. They presumed I was heading for King's Cross to head back up north. I decided to pull a flanker and got off at King's Cross. They decided to pounce! I legged it up the escalator and one of them tried to grab my ankle. Turning sharply I was able to introduce him to the efficacy and power of a good Yorkshire kick int' knackers. The pursuit stumbled and I crossed the top passage and went down the opposite escalator and re-boarded the train. I lived near Swiss Cottage. I could hear their enraged Dr. Marten's pounding towards the main line terminal. This after a Youth Cup Final where I was surrounded by Spurs fans who, in fairness, were appreciative of ALL the young talent on show . As you can imagine I was bitterly disappointed when we lost the second leg especially as the Seventies soon turned so sour for us. We were really good that day: calm, composed and inventive. Seem to remember that wee Stevie Spriggs has a long career but most of the players (on both sides) didn't reach the giddy heights. Strange that my memories of a proud Town performance were shadowed by the actions of some pillocks who were, sadly, part of the state of the game at that time.
