Was anyone at the England vs. Town game that took place later in 1974? Dick Taylor played one half Town and the other half for England. I remember Butch Wilkins playing. I thought so too, Terry Poole (Town) & possibly Chris Wood playing the other half.......Didn't Town play in the Yellow strip?

Chris Wood played the full match for Town. Town wanted him to play for them but England registered him instead. After making a few saves to keep Town out, manager Bobby Collins said he was going to "kick his teeth in" for the saves he made. Different times, eh?

Great piece on Spriggs. I worked in Cambridge for a few years when he was there . He was a key player for them and I saw him put in some great performances for them.

Played West Brom in semi. Brian Robson was playing. I remember watching Town reserves play United reserves and Robson made an appearance. I want to say he had just come back from injury and was just before Mexico 86 but could be wrong.

Interesting for me being a Scottish Lad that he was liked by one Scottish boss but not the other... I like the way he speaks so highly of Huddersfield (a man of ma own heart) even though he lives and works in Cambridge ! 😊

A bigger than usual reserve crowd turned up and the Cowshed was open. Think we played Liverpool on a Saturday in similar circumstances, back in the Central League days.

You may or may not be aware that we are approaching the 50th anniversary of when Town's youth team became not only the very first Town team to reach the F.A. Youth Cup final but also the first Yorkshire team to do so. Famously, the 2nd leg of the final was played at Leeds Road in front of over 15,000. They lost 1-0 in extra time but that feat has never been bettered. Did anyone go? Or have any memories of the game? my friend robin wray was the coach and two very good games and the team did themselves proud Robin Wray may have been a good coach but he was an absolutely nasty bar steward as a teacher at New College, imho

I think quite a few of the players that played under him will tell you he was tough and hard.

Yesterday, the club played host to a reunion of a group of individuals that played for the club's youth team between 1972 and 1975. The preparation started in August and after discussions with the club about recognising the club's history going forward, one of the suggestions from the Heritage Project was to mark the 50th anniversary of the youth team reaching the FA Youth Cup. All starting from a throwaway comment from Bob Newton about a year ago where he mentioned that the side had never been invited back to the club. It's something I'd wanted to happen for years as well, as I felt that it was about time those players had their day and a little bit of recognition. It's a good story because 45 years after that event, five or six of that team started to meet up again socially after getting back in touch on social media. Mostly instigated by Alan Sweeney, he managed to get the likes of Dave Nichols, Bob Mountain, Martin Fowler, Wayne Goldthorpe and Bob Newton back together for a reunion every few months back in 2017-18. This has since grown a bit and the likes of Lloyd Maitland and Grahame McGifford have become part of the friendship circle again and they're all really good pals. I've been lucky enough to tag along with them to these reunions and have become friends with them all. Anyway, the aim of yesterday's reunion was to get EVERYONE back in the same place to mark the 50th anniversary of that final, but to also mark that three years of success during 1972 and 1975, where they won two Portuguese tournaments, reached the final of the Youth Cup, the semi-final of the Youth Cup and many of them made their first team debuts. The club have been really good, and credit where it's due. They suggested a game and that gave me a date to work with and I then set about tracking down all the players and confirming their attendance. Out of the 15 players that played a part in that Youth Cup run, 12 of them were at yesterday's game. They are; Dick Taylor Alan Sweeney Paul Garner Peter Hart Lloyd Maitland Dave Nichols Bob Newton Martin Fowler Bob Mountain Steve Spriggs Kenny Ward Paul Holmes Sadly, Steve Barrett couldn't be located and Franny Firth and Paul Cooper are no longer with us. Also in attendance were Grahame McGifford, John Dungworth, Brian Young and Graham Aslett, who were part of the youth team the year before. But most importantly, Robin Wray was in attendance, the coach who led them through this massive period of success. Everyone enjoyed themselves, and there were some people there who hadn't seen each other in almost 50 years. Some even went on to the pitch at half-time to get a round of applause, although some preferred to stay in the bar as nerves got the better of them! It was a pleasure to have helped organise such an event and great to see all these people in the same room together after so long. And also a big thanks to Town, they made a group of 60-odd year old men very happy indeed.

I was at the Semi-final & Final in 1974 and Round 3 & the Semi in 1975 but wouldn't be confident at all of naming the majority of people in the photograph

Martin Fowler was my first ever 'favourite player' at Town, when I first started watching them. He later moved on to Blackburn, but never really fulfilled his potential.

Bob Newton is instantly recognisable with his barrel chest (or is it beer belly now?) and John Dungworth hasn’t changed much and still has his ‘tache. I also recognised Hart, Garner, Maitland and Mountain but the others had changed a lot, particularly Dick Taylor.
Good to read that they’ve got their own social group.

Dungworth is still very fondly remembered at Aldershot.

A very talented group of young players who gave us something to be proud of when our club was at a low ebb. Most didn’t reach their potential. I think that may in part have been due to the context of the downward trajectory which was not of their making. Often they were thrown in at the deep end before they could mature as professionals. Lack of investment in the squad that had entered the old First Division so magnificently as Champions saw a lost opportunity.

Why did SS regret leaving Town? We were in the doldrums then and he had a long and successful time at Cambridge United. Steve's interview will be in the Ipswich Town programme and I'll post it on here, but basically, he loved it at Town and said after the first day he walked into Leeds Road as a kid, all he ever wanted to do was play for Town. He was banging Tom Johnston's door down in the 1974-75 season asking why he couldn't get in the team and Johnston kept fobbing him off saying that he was playing players that the club were trying to get rid of and that he'd be in the team for the following season. However, the last time he went in the office, Johnston told him he was being released. I couldn't put it in the interview, but he didn't have kind words for Johnston. Steve says he had a good career at Cambridge, but would have swapped a lot of that to have had more of a career at Town.

I think that Ian Banks scored one of our goals, definitely a 3-1 win. If Banks played that makes it 1987-88, probably FA Cup 4th Round day, because it was a Saturday and we'd lost in the 3rd Round to City. It didn't do us any good in a most dreadful season.
