I'm reluctant to read too much into the game yesterday, but.... Who am I kidding? I'm trying to temper my excitement about this lad. Cautious optimism should be where I'm at, but he looks to me like he could be really special. The next few games should tell us more, but I think he's going to do very, very well for us. At the game it didn’t look a booking to me, did it look a booking to those watching on iPlayer? He certainly looks a top prospect based on yesterday. Him, Kasumu and Rudoni could be a dynamic midfield 3. First viewing I agreed with the ref. Second viewing it was actually a good tackle, got the ball. Their guy landed awkwardly which may have made it look worse than it was.

Looks a player, definitely someone we need - tenacious is probably a good word. He was everywhere. I was slightly concerned when he looked knackered after about half an hour, but I’m sure fitness will come with more senior games. Even the fittest of elite players will be knackered chasing City around the park.

He looked like he caught somebody with an elbow before the tackle he got booked for (on the replay it seemed that way anyway). What he did get a yellow for was harsh but probably fair if you view the 2 acts as 1.

Yes, this lad looks like a right unit for a 19-year-old, unlucky with the booking he got the ball, and the city player fell awkwardly but I think on that showing he's going to be the missing link in Mid-field that's been lacking all season. Like the look is our new Striker too, don't know why we didn't play him from the start only Darren Moore knows that. Hope we have more signings to come.

On that subject though, is there a logical reason that yellow cards can't be reviewed by VAR? Wouldn't have taken much effort for a quick review and then start play with a drop ball or something. Just seems daft that they can overturn a red but not a yellow, or is there an explanation that I'm missing?

Your mistake is in assuming that there is anything logical about the decisions made by the powers that be.... Truthfully I suspect it's a workload thing. The slippery slope argument that there is only time to review a certain number of things so they prioritise the biggest calls only. Personally I'd argue that a yellow card is big enough to justify intervention. Since May 2022 though I've become awfully sceptical about the usefulness of VAR...

Bit of a mixed home debut for him
I was seriously impressed with how easily he won possession 3 or 4 times in the first half by just being so much stronger and quicker. Amazed he didn't get booked though as he seemed to make a lot of fouls and the ref gave him a final warning but then still allowed another in the second half. Definitely got away with one for the goal too as that was a foul and a booking.
He was less impressive with the ball at his feet when advancing in to forward areas. You can see why he has been converted from an attacking to more defensive player.
Also seemed to be absolutely knackered after that sprint forward first half when their lad pulled him two or three times before he fell over and the ref gave nothing. Never really seemed to get going again after that.

He played further forward than I expected. Obviously because Hogg was playing the holding role.
As I said on the match thread, I thought he worked hard and got stuck in - too much at times - but I was underwhelmed by his general performance. I was expecting a bit more Premier League quality on the ball.
I won't judge him after seeing him once, but I was expecting to see him on the ball, making passes much more than I did.
Perhaps he was playing out of position, and will come into his own if he plays the Hogg role. He did get into some good attacking positions, particularly in the first half, but having watched the whole game I am not sure playing in an advanced position is his strength.
Anyway, he is a young lad who is new to the team, so he deserves more time on the pitch before he is properly judged.

Looks like a top drawer ball winner, needs to stay on his feet more though as he’s inches away from red cards. Needs to up his fitness levels, hopefully it’s a match fitness thing as he hasn’t played much senior football.
Need to see more from him with the ball.
Don’t think him and Hogg in the same team will work.

Difficult to look good on the ball when the tactics are designed to bypass midfield. Also he had some good movement but either didn’t get passed to or the pass was misplaced. I thought he looked good but in the disorganised chaos of our tactics he will struggle.

He has only been with Chelsea 6 months so it isn't like the other Chelsea lads we've had where they've come through the academy and are clearly excellent technically. I think Chelsea signed him purely for his athleticism and saw a low risk opportunity to mould him in to an Essien type midfielder

Exactly, you could drop any premier League quality midfielder into that performance and he'd struggle to create. I thought his ball winning was exceptional although he needs to calm down a bit, could have been sent off before half time on another day! Bizarrely the whistle happy ref didn't even book him! DM killed the game completely taking him off then Koroma

Don’t think him and Hogg in the same team will work. He needs to be at the base of the midfield, protecting the back 3 or 4. Hogg should be a Whitehead figure ie used off the bench or sparingly. The truth is we need a ball playing, what Chicken would call a quarter back, centre midfielder to control the game. Our current tactic of try and build down the flanks is predictable (easy to defend), too slow and ineffective. Matos in the Kante role with someone who he can give the ball to is the ideal. We still don't have that player. There is of course the question of if DM would play differently. Which is debatable.

Even I would struggle to look good in that shambolic excuse for a team...players were all over the place..often in bunches with wide open spaces elsewhere, nobody running off the ball, no awareness to look for a man anyway...what passes there were were wildly inaccurate or just sailed out of play..seemed like there was no talking either...basically every man for himself...a typical Darren Moore set up in other words.

DM killed the game completely taking him off then Koroma I think the ref had decided that he & Gyabi (?) were as bad as each other & both should/could have been sent off about 3 times for accumulation of fouls but he wasn't going to bother with either. You can tell how raw Matos is, he needs to pace himself better but this is his first taste of mens football & he is showing promise. Yes, he needs to stay on his feet more but there is a player in there, he'll make a good no6.

There may well be a negative post about him from me on here somewhere, to be Frank I seriously doubted whether he would ever make a championship player, let alone a Premier one.
Yesterday may have proved me wrong he was clearly given a job to do on Bannon, but he was so much more than that.
Cut out the silly, over exuberant tackling and we have a (loan😒) player here.
Well played Alex, jolly well played young man!👊

I really like him. Bags of energy, tenacious, plays with a smile on his face.
But seriously, was he out injured when they did diving practice at Chelsea??
yesterdays effort was possibly the worst attempted dive ive ever seen and hes done a quite few bad ones since he joined us. If I was reffing id have booked him,,once id stopped laughing.
He'd stand a chance of conning the ref if there was actually an opposition player near him when he went down...and doing it in stages, first onto his knees, then the full body collapse isnt working either!

Bit harsh. We have drawn 3 and won 1 since he came. Yes he can get carried away and will probably get yellow and the odd red card. But he gets stuck in, seems to be on a mission to prove he will be good enough for Chelsea in the long term. Well played.

Still think Matos is worse at diving though.
