Looking up now. Just what we needed someone with experience of getting a club at least into the play offs ... although I reckon we will run away with the title and be crowned champions at Easter. UTT

It’s an ah right ok appointment - main thing is it’s sorted early.
Fine to play 352 if 1. 3 know their roles - pass and start or get rid 2. You have wing backs not full backs
352 tends to be 53 ………………………..2 whenever town have played it recently

Anyone any idea who his Backroom team will be? Duff has previously had former Town striker Martin Paterson as an assistant at Barnsley and Swansea, but he's now the Burton manager so he'll need someone new... Allegedly cracked Adam Clayton. He’d fit right in with the current changing room.

Tends to get former teammates involved. Personally speaking, the dream would be Steven Davis in some capacity to teach our midfielders how to pass to each other. We'd also have no trouble hanging on to Brodie

Sixty years following Town, 33 permanent managers; 7 promotions and 7 relegation. Are you sure? Or did you take a break, during which we had a relegation?

I fucking HATE 3-5-2. Utter rubbish formation. Defensive, reactive, boring. It depends how you play it. Sheff Utd sure as hell weren't boring playing it a few years back. We got promoted playing it under Jacko. Great Escape 1997/98 too. Both times with players in a free role in the advanced midfield position, getting the best out of Paul Dalton and Danny Schofield respectively. The former in particular played some good football and was a formidable side. I've always liked 3-5-2 - it's my go-to formation on Football Manager*. The advantage of having a clear system and identify is huge. Successful teams have a way of playing. Think us under Wagner in the promotion season. Yes, we made tweaks on a game-by-game basis, but we never reinvented the wheel. We played 4-2-3-1, high press, playing through Aaron Mooy. Every player knew his job. It meant when we did make changes, every player who came in also knew their job. One of the reasons we got a Cup replay against Manchester City with the reserves - that identity was ingrained top to bottom. It is possible to be too wed to an idea, and I'd hope Duff has that flexibility to make changes in personnel and tactics (not necessarily systems) within games, but having that way of playing would be great. * - no, I won't apologise for introducing fantasy to this debate on footballing realism.

You have wing backs not full backs 352 tends to be 53 ………………………..2 whenever town have played it recently Agree totally and said as much earlier. The main areas to strengthen if we are to play 3-5-2 are wing back and then obviously everyone knows about the midfield. Too many times when playing that formation we’ve had to either play full backs as wing backs who end up been too defensive as poor going forward or wingers as wing backs who obviously don’t naturally have the qualities to defend or probably the natural instinct/mentality to do so. For what’s it’s worth also two quick centre halves either side of a central one isn’t a must but desirable. If balker stays we have one,if we can find another I would but I’d be interested to see Spencer play right side of central.I don’t think(I’ll probably be proved wrong) he’s a wing back, for me he’s a proper full back but I can see a world where he could be an adept centre half in a 3.Fairly tall, quick, decent on the ball and I’d say his best quality is his defending.

Excited by this, wanted him in January (although I was excited at that point by Andre's appointment also). Solid 3-5-2 no fooking about football that gets wins. Good timing too. I more than reckon he'll have kept an eye on us since his interview in January, and he'll be in a decent position to put his plans into action. Plenty of time to sort the wheat from the chaff and get some proper targeted recruitment done. I fucking HATE 3-5-2. Utter rubbish formation. Defensive, reactive, boring. It’s defensive how we have played it but it doesn’t have to be.

. A proper, proven, manager. One who has done the job successfully at this level with two different clubs. From the info on the Town site he oversaw a rebuild of the squad at Barnsley, which is just what we need. He was a solid centre half in his playing days so he knows how essential a strong defence is. I like this about his first season at Barnsley, from his 'Journey to Town': "Duff had overseen an overhaul of their squad in the summer before amassing 86 points to finish in fourth place, scoring 80 goals in the process" The last time we scored over 80 goals was 2009-10 when Jordan Rhodes was banging them in for fun. This from his first season at Cheltenham: "We were good without the ball but couldn't score a goal. I didn't win a game for 10 games! We changed from 4–4–2 to 3–5–2 and we are now completely expansive in terms of our level. There are teams that do try and play football and we are one of them." They finished 16th that season, 4th the following season and won the divison the year after. We have appointed him in really good time and we have to hope he gets real backing from Kevin Nagle. Given Kevin's ambition I think he will. So we now need an overhaul of the squad and I don't think, at this level, it will be as ruthless as many think. If the decent players we have here buy into this appointment, and that must be more likely than the last couple, then with a few out and a few in, we could have a decent League 1 side. As Warnock and Worthington showed they need organising and motivating, and clearing some out and some quality replacements. The moans about him not relocating didn't seem to be seen as a problem with AB. If his family are well settled in Cheltenham then it must be tough on him but I can see why, especially given the hire and fire of managers, he would live away and make sure his family are OK where they are. I know we are now in League 1 but I am looking forward to this season more now than I have for a few years.

So, anyone watching Town longer than 51 years has, like you and me, one more relegation than promotion. Apart from the really senior amongst us. They will have 2 more relegations than promotions.

I have to say, i am not impressed with with our new choice of manager at all. All these statistics and "well he did well for them" remember this is Huddersfield Town. On that basis, we need Ali Bongo or Paul Daniels... or Jesus Christ He's too busy running Gabon.

Well done all on making what seems like a solid appointment.
It's a great job for MD too as I should imagine he feels like with backing he can achieve here.
The timing is great too. He looks like he might have had a holiday, should be refreshed and ready to start building from day one.
Should command the respect of the players especially with the expected clear out. Defensively, I'm not sure there's much recruitment to do if key players and prospects stay. Needs some real quality and graft in front of the back line though.
It feels like HTAFC have turned a corner and appointed a manager who at long last is a good fit.

A few of their forum members predicting we'll be in for a few of their players. I'd love to see a couple of them, Kane and Connell in particular. I reckon they'd accept decent offers, too.

On paper, pleased with this appointment - good choice for an ambitious league one club.
We need to back him in the transfer window and get a quality balanced squad ready for next season

What's especially interesting on there is that there are a few posters who clearly see us as big fish in the league, with comments like we can't compete with the wages Hudds will pay etc. Some of our posters should take note.
