PSF should be preparation for the coming season. Ideally, start with a very easy clash to begin with to get match fitness and then progressively increase difficulty as the team gets up to speed, finishing with a hard, competitive game. How on earth are these four games good preparation for what will be a tough L1 campaign !! www.htafc.com/news/2024/may/club-confirm-2024-pre-season-schedule/

We have more than 11 players to get fit, so I assume that these are not all first team fixtures.

Aren't we then going to be playing games in Austria ? Yes, but at this stage this looks like team building (also important but not the same) unless a competitive fixture is inserted.

The aim of preseason is building up fitness We're playing semi pro footballers, who can only train twice a week, often in public facilities and usually after a day's work While our lads train 4 days a week for a couple of hours, have an army of conditioning, fitness, nutrition coaches, physios, masseurs, performance analysts etc and access to top gym equipment and GPS running monitors We'll hardly be blowing at the end of 90 mins given the mismatch and it can't be the same as playing full time pros

As you say its building fitness, these games provide that. Austria is where we will play better teams. We will also have behind closed door games. People read too much into friendlies without understanding the nature of it all.

Granted Harrogate but that's just one game Technically we're miles ahead of footballer in the 6th tier so surely the only benefit is a runaround. I can't imagine fitness differs between the 6th and 8th or 9th tier (last season which was heavily criticised) I would have preferred a friendly were we played an opposition with the technique/ skill to stretch us so we had to run around a bit to retrieve the ball or stay in shape. Also to stay switched on because they have the skill to play a killer pass etc Instead these opponents won't have that skill and we'll probably see most of the ball and our defenders little to do. So it boils down to just an opportunity to run for 90 mins in a game environment - against footballers with (understandably) inferior fitness

The order of games is... 29/6 - Emley - 4 divisions below us in Northern Premier League 6/7 - Guiseley - 3 divisions below us in National League North 10/7 - York - 2 divisions below us in National League 13/7 - Harrogate - 1 division below us in League 2

He was also a full time pro for a few seasons. It's just different I'm basically seeing no challenge in these games - we'll probably work harder in games between the squad. I mean the B Team of last year would be expected to beat Emley and Guiseley. Probably York as well

Sheffield United are playing York and Harrogate Town too. Who exactly are you expecting us to play?!

But you're judging before the full pre season has been announced. There will be I'd imagine 2/3 games in Austria and a significant amount Bundesliga and 2Bundesliga teams tour there too plus Italian teams. Maybe wait to judge then. MD isn't going to let us be unfit come August 10 and he's already made changes by cancelling the alfreton game. Added to that we come back 24 June which earlier than before and I'd imagine before other clubs too

I think that you cannot be professional below the 6th tier, and it would most certainly be unsustainable to be so at that level - there are barely any pro teams in National League North/South as it is so hard to get pro players to drop down and have reduced wage demands, and due to lack of revenue streams it is rare that semi-pro players at this level want to become pro as they will earn a large chunk of their income from their jobs outside football, quitting these jobs just to play football full-time wouldn't be worth it as the pro clubs at this level are not able to pay the wage that they would earn being a semi-pro footballer with a job on the side.

Watford and Leeds are also there that week, not sure if they're in the exact same spot though.

This looks so far no improvement on last seasons much criticised preseason. I would say Stockport and Heerenveen provided a better test We'll have to see what happens in Austria - full games, using players only for 30 mins blocks, who knows if it's little more than training drills or full 90 min games.

Great line up that. All fantastic opportunities for a day out and some er, pop or two. The only fly in the ointment is York away in midweek. That should have been a Saturday. Oh yes the players need to get up to match speed.
PS I once did a job in Menston up the line from Guiseley and I can tell you there are some decent pubs near the ground.

I strongly suspect we'll get three more games in against stronger opposition, two on tour and one at home against higher division opponents. It's May. Loads of time for arrangements yet.
