Failed on the geography Failed on history of the monarchy: 1664 to 1660 was a republic. We absolved the monachy when we beheaded Charles I. Cromwell established a commonwealth. Love it. #ingerlund OK so William never defeated Harold to become king of England And People from Northern Ireland are not British I'm not wasting any more time on you No. I said we haven’t had a monarchy for 1000 years or more. I said we have only had a continuous monarchy for 364 years. Which is fact. Oliver Cromwell got rid of the monarchy in 1649 and established a commonwealth that lasted until 1660. Fact. And no, Northern Ireland is, constitutionally, not part of Britain. Neither are Gibraltar and the Falkland Isles. This is fact. N.I. is part of the United Kingdom. And Gibraltar and the Falklands are overseas territories. Fact. They are governed however by ‘the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’. Fact. And whilst we’re at it, Jersey, Gurensey, Isle of Man et etc are Crown dependencies. They’re not sovereign states. Fact. Or part of Great Britain, Fact. They are part of the commonwealth nations, which also includes’British Overseas Territories’. Fact. Which, just because they are name that, they are not to be confused with forming part of Britain. They are so named that because they are ruled / governed by Britain. Fact. And all those people might be upset that they’re not British, but they’ll just have to be snowflakes until constitutionally they are recognised as being part of Great Britain. Because, you’ve guessed it, it’s a fact. What’s so hard to understand?

Liverpool fans always boo the national anthem.
My experience of England fans abroad are that some are that pissed they can't remember the words.
The song from my old regiment The Royal Tank Regiment "My Boy Willie" all 4 verse's brilliant song

A monarchy is perpetual until it they are removed. A monarch is a lifelong head of state until they die or abdicate. They’re not elected in a democracy. Cromwell was (albeit dubiously) elected to power at the head of a democratic party - not a blood line. You can argue all you like about the role of the head of state, and what that means, but what you can’t argue is that it was a monarchy. Nor was it an empire. He was Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland. The empire as it was then, was ruled by the rump parliament. They signed the ‘act of abolishment’. The 1660s are not referred to as the ‘restoration’ because their furniture was shite.

Stop embarrassing yourself...look up the meaning of monarch You knew exactly what I meant by monarch...around 1200 years if you want to split hairs..first being 800 and something...and even if you want to take out Cromwells few years it's still over 1000 years.. It's not my opinion...its fact from the Oxford English dictionary not the "Tiro English dictionary" Cromwell refused the title of monarch and took the title of lord protector instead

N Ireland is just a carbunkle on the island of Ireland..a British enclave, just like Gibralter is on Spain..
Not for much longer though I suspect..
The reason England have to play GSTK is entiryel political, to keep some semblanc e of 'the united kingdom'...and the fact Wales and Scotland don't want to be in the UKand regain their independent nationality by having their own anthems shows how precarious it is. If England has it's own anthem it would send shivers down the necks of those establishment bods still living in the 'rule britannia' era.... That's not a fact. I know several Scots and the majority of them DON'T want independence. I'm also half-Welsh and don't know a single Welsh person who would vote for independence, and I know many, not just family members. It's not just corruption that's putting voters off SNP, it's the fact the "once in a generation" referendum suddenly became a call for "once every couple of years" referendum. Obviously I don't know EVERY Scots or Welsh person but from my peer and family group it's a massive minority that want independence. Edit: Just as a caveat I haven't asked that specific question yet this year, I'll try and get an updated view I confess I may have over elaborated a few of the finer points....i've not surveyed of course ...and may not actually be true at all... Shock horror..on DATM too..........

As opposed to "God save our gracious King"? We have had a monarch for over a 1000 years now The foreigners love it and visit London/Buckingham Palace/Tower london/Windsor Castle in their thousands They certainly bring more money in than they cost...I like my history and always find traveling abroad that foreigners love our heritage The only obvious problem I can see is Birmingham city fans not wanting to sing it about the future king William who is an Aston villa fan🤣 What does anyone's position on the Monarchy have to do with it? You said that Jerusalem might offend non-Christians, but the current anthem also refers to (presumably the Christian) God. By the way, I'm a non Christian myself, and I'm not offended by either. I just think for the England team we should have a different song, with GSTK reserved for sports where we play as GB.

Why Jerusalem? Please Explain. It’s not for me, but this is why so many people like it: “And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God on England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here among those dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant Land.” Thanks for that. We better get them all some hymn books! To stop them from miming.

To whom of those that would know.
What would be required/needed to be approved/signed off, for the national anthem to be changed?
P.S from that list. Jerusalem would be my pick.
But, I'm not sure what national anthems are 2.30mins plus+? I know of Uraguay and Greece being long but thats about it? Unless there is a shorter version of Jerusalem out there that I've not heard yet?
National anthems that stand out from the rest in my eyes are: Italian, French, Germany, Scotland (not in any particular order).
As much as GSTQ/K we all know, and can sing along too, does give me powerhouse feels.

I think my area Argyll & Bute (soon to be Argyll, Bute & South Lochaber - which is good as it’ll be one less MP) voted for independence in the referendum, there are plenty Scottish Saltire Flags dotted around gardens here (outwith the Euro 2024 finals) so I’m presuming they are for it though I cannot be certain as maybe they just wanna advertise they’re Scottish just like I like to advertise that I’m Huddy Town by the colours of ma house and wearing HTAFC attire most days up the village... Because I live in a smallish area where everyone knows everyone else and consequently everyone else’s business it’s easier to work it out here and it’s very much the ‘young team’ that want it on these shores while the pensioners would like it the way things are - I think Glasgow used to have everyone pretty much voting Labour as they were good to the working class city that the majority there were, however sadly it’s now becoming split on ‘sectarian lines’ with The Celtic supporters voting SNP and Rangers fans voting TORY even though they’ll strip their benefits and have their children working until they’re 75 ! 😬 I go up to Inverness to sponsor and watch The Mighty Clachnacuddin FC and they seem very big on Independence in that city, however head to royal Deeside and it kinda swings the other way there, the same in Dundee it’s all for independence while the rich farmers and landowners in The Borders would vote Tory for sure... Argyll and Bute is a very intriguing seat in Parliament as it was SNP from 1974-79, then Tory from 1979-1987, then Lib-Dem from 1987-2015 and SNP have had it since and been elected three times in the last nine years... So we shall see who prevails this time around (not that it makes any difference to me though I don’t like the Tories because of past misdeeds to Scotland and The Whisky Isle regarding excise duty rises that crippled the industry all through The 80’s and caused misery to all the villages here in The West Island) ☹️ Back to the topic of national anthems - If I had my choice for one for Bonnie Scotland, I’d go with ‘Always Argyll’ - a really nice ballad about our county... Unfortunately though, there are another 31 council areas in Scotland that might have something to say about that suggestion !!!

I think Scotland gets a better deal than England for sure goodbet... Free countrywide bus travel if... 1) Under 22 2) Over 60 3) Disabled 22-60 Free prescriptions (I’m very thankful of that)... Free university tuition (my niece and her mother and granny are relived)... Free care (unless a sole houseowner needing in care 24/7/365)... Ultra cheap ferry travel if 1) 2) 3) above and also 50% off the train fairs countrywide after the first ten miles free (effectively free in the cities)... Free flights worth £300 from The Whisky Isle to Glasgow for hospital appointments and a free night in the Holiday inn at Glasgow Airport if the flight can’t get back due to crosswinds, fog (no ILS here) or technical fault reasons and £15 meal / bar voucher (that was fifteen years ago so probably more now)... Alternitavely if anyone hates flying, free car on ferry, petrol mileage of 248 miles paid and overnight hotels in Glasgow to the value of £50... So we do not too badly up here with all those bounties... But The Whisky Isle anyway (certainly not the others so much) puts a helluva lot of Excise Duty towards the treasury so our lot here don’t feel too guilty about grabbin a wee bitty back in whatever way we can !!! 🥃 😉

And don’t get me started on the Government of Gibraltar’s insistence on referring to the “King of Gibraltar” when talking about Charlie 3 when they clearly ought to refer the British (U.K.) Crown in respect of Gibraltar. Tsk.

Yes..the poem by William Blake draws on the myth that christ himself may have visited Glastonbury with Joseph of arimathea and walked on England's Green mountains Being a catholic I have no issues with this great poem/hymn I just pointed out that it's a very Christian song and the faith police will jump on it and say its excluding Hindu,s Sikhs and Muslims...unfortunately these are the times we live in

Should “God Save The King” be the anthem played for England? In my opinion, it’s the National Anthem of the United Kingdom, England shouldn’t be grabbing it for themselves. Do Scotland and Wales fans feel a bit aggrieved that England fans claim the anthem of the Union for themselves ? Does it even matter ? agree. I cringe every time England appropriates the National Anthem of the UK for its own use. Even more embarrassing when playing Scotland or Wales and their fans boo it.

England should never have the GB anthem played. I always find it weird that we do when the other home countries have their own individual ones.
Land of hope and glory ,,, that’s the one all day long for me. Mentions god but as a devout atheist that doesn’t bother me. Englands been a Christian country for well over a thousand years.
I like GSTK even though it’s a bit of a dirge. But only when it’s a GB team that’s playing.

The welsh anthem is land of my Fathers, again no muslims or hindhus would wish to claim Wales as the historical land of their fathers.

Forget the GB/England stuff. It's a stinker of a tune with lyrics about God (who only a third of the country believes in) protecting our exalted monarch (who only 2 thirds of the country want to keep).
Make no wonder it's never sung with the passion of other countries. It's an absolute shocker.

God Save The King should have been left in the 18th century, when it was a pretty blatant piece of music hall propaganda to promote the legitimacy of the Hanoverian dynasty. ‘God save great George our king’ were the original lyrics. It was rubbish then. It hasn’t improved with age, especially when put next to the national anthems of the likes of France and Germany. Jerusalem is the work of a genius. Stirring words, brilliant tune. One to belt out with gusto (by the 3 people who know the words). Yes, a Christian overtone and background (which shouldn’t be a problem when we still have a state religion), but also something open to interpretation as working to build something peaceful and special. The second verse is magnificent. Plus, it’d be great to have the only national anthem in the world that moans about the architecture. The modern equivalent would be a complaint about car parks.

I’d say it’s sung with more passion than many and I struggle to think of another country where the crowd will start singing it mid game. Christianity and the monarchy are two of the main elements of English heritage and culture going back over a millennium ( the two biggest I’d say) so It makes sense that the anthem mentions them. I’d quite like it if it mentioned how we once ‘owned’ a third of the world, but imagine that would distress a lot of people!

The tunes shit. No one is distressed, just some people have enough intelligence and rational thinking to see that certain things that were considered acceptable in the past are no longer considered so.

There is no God. No human has a divine right to rule over people. The tunes shit. No one is distressed, just some people have enough intelligence and rational thinking to see that certain things that were considered acceptable in the past are no longer considered so. The king doesn’t rule over you. He has no power at all to speak of. How much intelligence and rational thinking does understanding that take? He is but a figurehead. A valuable national marketing tool that we’d frankly be insane to get rid of. You don’t have to think our imperial days were acceptable by todays morals to also be able to appreciate what a feat they were at the time for such a relatively small nation. I’d enjoy it upsetting those who can’t help but referee history by modern day standards of behaviour. There is no god though. But our culture and heritage is still built on a Christian belief so even though there is no god, I don’t think it matters as far as god getting a mention.

The whole song is about being reigned over by an unelected sovereign to be honest. I don't judge actions in the past by todays standards. The witchfinders in the 17th century went to their grave believing they had done a great service torturing and murdering women. Edward I believed he was doing God's work murdering and expelling all the Jews from the UK, he really did. It improved his afterlife experience. I'm not distressed, it was down to belief in a God. But I'm not going to sing about it.
