Possibly but he doesn’t ’rule’ over you in any way.
I’m as un-religious as you but doesn’t stop me singing about god, be it the anthem or a Christmas carol or whatever. It’s just lyrics, you don’t have to actually believe them. Speaking as someone who’s sung “we’re the greatest team in football, the world has ever seen “ at countless town matches! 😃

Every bloody set of supporters sing it so it isn't special, and the line "we're the greatest team in football" is clunky as heck... the word order makes it sound like it's been through several steps of Google translate.

In my eyes we are the greatest team in football , that's why I wouldn't traipse out in all weather's to watch any other team . Anyway , whilst we're at it "Champions of Europe" sung a few miles down the road takes some beating 😁

There is no God. No human has a divine right to rule over people. The tunes shit. No one is distressed, just some people have enough intelligence and rational thinking to see that certain things that were considered acceptable in the past are no longer considered so. The king doesn’t rule over you. He has no power at all to speak of. How much intelligence and rational thinking does understanding that take? He is but a figurehead. A valuable national marketing tool that we’d frankly be insane to get rid of. You don’t have to think our imperial days were acceptable by todays morals to also be able to appreciate what a feat they were at the time for such a relatively small nation. I’d enjoy it upsetting those who can’t help but referee history by modern day standards of behaviour. There is no god though. But our culture and heritage is still built on a Christian belief so even though there is no god, I don’t think it matters as far as god getting a mention. for me it's not so much about the King, the 'royal' family, the pageantry and the castles etc...it's all show and thrills the tourists.... my 'beef' is the massive substructure beneath the 'royal' family...the 'establishment' of Lord, Ladies, Barons, Dukes, Earls blah blah blah..and the 'hangers on' around all that , hob knobbing, bowing and scraping..a subculture miles away from the reality of life, but which impinges on us all every day..a clique, a massive community of privilege.... the House of 'Lords' ffs..1,000 of them...(approx). No, if we can get rid of all that and just keep it to a royal family with no hangers on, i'd be fine... A republic with a 'notional' King/Queen...for the tourists...

Alot of clubs sing 'By far' instead of we're. But I sing 'WERE the greatest team the world HAD ever seen' Thus making it a little bit more special for us due to our superior dominance of England in the 1920s and at that time likely the world.

It’s not for me, but this is why so many people like it: “And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God on England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the countenance divine shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here among those dark Satanic Mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds, unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant Land.” Thanks for that. We better get them all some hymn books! To stop them from miming. Remember singing this on the train journey down to Chester Crown court back in 2006, along with 6 others. Town Crier episode…….

World in motion or silence. All those old dirges are just offence to the ears. I’m anti monarchy tho. Tax dodging racist bigots the lot of them. I hope in my lifetime this country can move beyond its pillaging past and reinvent itself on the European and world stage. The last 40 years have been near perpetual decline.

Its not part of Great Britain geographically. Nationality and citizenship...Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 Also northern Irish participants in the Great Britain Olympic team Not for too much longer. Re-united Ireland is in sight now.

Forget the GB/England stuff. It's a stinker of a tune with lyrics about God (who only a third of the country believes in) protecting our exalted monarch (who only 2 thirds of the country want to keep). Make no wonder it's never sung with the passion of other countries. It's an absolute shocker. I’d say it’s sung with more passion than many and I struggle to think of another country where the crowd will start singing it mid game. Christianity and the monarchy are two of the main elements of English heritage and culture going back over a millennium ( the two biggest I’d say) so It makes sense that the anthem mentions them. I’d quite like it if it mentioned how we once ‘owned’ a third of the world, but imagine that would distress a lot of people! I don't care about the history - my point is that a significant proportion of the country don't agree with the monarchy - hence having a national anthem all about our great monarch seems a bit archaic. Anyway, I've just seen Flag Of Scotland sung before the Hungary game - I rest my case. 😉
