Paul Jones from Bolton . Absolute Rolls Royce of a centre back.

Whilst Grant Holt probably doesn’t fit into a top players definition he had a good reputation following time in the Premier League by the time he joined us for his 2014 loan spell.

Fair to say James Vaughan was on his way down when he joined us, but it's the only reason we could get him. If it wasn't for his injuries he'd have spent his entire career in the Premier League no problem.

A Wolves fan I know is mates with Mel Eves. He loved his loan spell at Town.So did I, oozed class & absolutely ripped L33ds apart in one of his games at Town......I don't think we could afford to buy him, did he end up at Sheff Utd(?).

Paul Jones from Bolton . Absolute Rolls Royce of a centre back. Quality defender, and the only centre back I've seen score a hat-trick ( 2 pens and a header ) in the 4-0 win over Cardiff at Leeds Road,1984.

Strangely I read this, then almost straight away came across a podcast with Mark Ward. Don't remember much about his time with us, though. David Phillips was really good for us. A great long passer of the ball and a terrific shot on him. Barry Horne was brilliant, him and Phillips were absolutely inspired freebies. The only thing I can remember about Mark Ward was him and Tommy Cowan coming to blows away against Wolves at Molyneux!

Going to be honest here...i cant remember it, what was unique about the corner routine? Phillips loitering outside the D, seemingly not going to be involved. Outswinging corner to the edge of the area, which Phillips struck at goal on the volley. You can see it here

He had a full page photo in my Match annual from the year before and I couldn't believe Town had signed such a famous player from the top division! I was only young but I seem to remember he was a very classy player. I think we signed Peter Eastoe around about that time too. The days when top players needed to play to pay the mortgage and didn't see anything lower than the top division as being beneath them!

Terry Curran. Success I think. I wouldn’t say he was on the way down, he just moved around a lot. I think he played for 13 clubs in his career.

I remember reading somewhere that Clem Stephenson was a bit of an odd signing at the time, as he took up a lot of our transfer budget and was considered past it at 30. Went on to become a legend as player and manager

One 3 year contract in the top flight probably means you dont need to ever work again so dropping down the leagues is only for those with a genuine love of playing. We used to these ex top players all the time...Rankin, Kindon, Stapleton, Withe, Shotton, Curran, Joey Jones, Allardyce, Tony Norman, McNab...hardly ever happens now.

Whilst Grant Holt probably doesn’t fit into a top players definition he had a good reputation following time in the Premier League by the time he joined us for his 2014 loan spell. For a player who had spent much of his early career in the lower leagues I couldn’t believe how effective Grant Holt was when he came in. He was exactly what we needed that season and felt like he almost single handedly turned our form around (from memory).
