There are a lot of players who have passed through Town’s books on their way up, and also quite a few examples of those who, having had a good career at the top of football, have come to Town on their way down. Frank Stapleton is a notable example, and I could name many others. I recall Stapleton as a successful if relatively brief signing for Town who left us with honour.
Perhaps others would like to nominate ‘downward’ successes, or failures.

David Unsworth...he was shocking for Town, including missing a pen at Millwall.
Neil McNab too, less shocking than Unsworth though.

Successes: Barry Horne Gary Crosby David Phillips Kevin Kilbane
Well-past it: Kevin Gallacher Jason Puncheon
The majority, e.g. Karim Matmour, Scott Sellers, etc were just unremarkable or didn't feature enough to form a judgement of, e.g Tony Norman.

Possibly the last player of any real quality to sign for the club.

Barry Horne was a success IMO. I thought that Barhen Horn transformed the side, when he was on the pitch he made all the difference guiding and transforming the team. We seemed to try and find a similar older player to do the same job after he left but could never find one that could bring the same drive to the side. I have felt for some time we have kept bringing in old past it players thinking that they will either bring in their past form or bring with them some transformational element to the team. We have just ended up in the main with older slower players with no sell on value.

The three European cup winners...
Joey Jones Peter Withe David May.
A bit of a comedown, especially for Peter Withe who went from scoring the winning goal for Villa v Bayern Munich in the '82 final...
To playing Centre back for Town alongside Andy Duggan at home v Birmingham 8 years later..
Also Neil McNab..scored the first goal for Man.City against us in the 10- 1 massacre and later played for us on loan.
Can't remember if he was any good, same time as Nigel Callaghan if I remember rightly.
