agreed with a lot of what she did and disagreed with a lot too. She was the leader through a decade of huge change on a global and economic level and it was never going to be an easy ride. But like her or loath here, at least she was a british leader who carried a bit of oomph in the world, rather than all the various namby=pamby nonentities that have followed her.

Stood up to the unilateralist CND pressures of the time.... and we would still be negotiating for the Argies to leave the Falklands if it wasn't for her. Just IMO of course

Hang on though a full military state funeral in the midst of a recession in which were all in together?

No doubt we'll see some extreme views on this thread, so let's keep it respectful. Thought she was ok apart from destroying the donkey jacket industry. As Daz says, she wasn't scared of anybody or anything. No doubt they'll be dancing in the streets of Beunos Aires and Barnsley tonight.

So, Margaret Thatcher is outlived by Nelson Mandela, the man she condemned as "a terrorist" while supporting the racist apartheid regime.
Also kind of ironic that she gave one last gift to the Conservatives by knocking the benefit cuts out of the headlines..

You're a bit late as the Labour Party are now supporting benefit cuts as they realise than many working class agree with cutting back the welfare state where it needs it. Pay it to those who are in need but some are taking the mick and it needs rolling back.
I can relate to a member of our family who has never worked and lived in luxury for 25 years and has brought up a son who is even too lazy to sign on and expect charity to bring his food in.
Thatcher for me was about 50% right and stronger than any leader we have had since and we still have her arch rival still resident in Barnsley so I suppose he can celebrate.

You're not seriously suggesting the benefit system shouldn't be overhauled are you? The benefit culture in this country is way out of control. In my line of work, I've dealt with families on benefit that have a higher level of income than those in work.

Also kind of ironic that she gave one last gift to the Conservatives by knocking the benefit cuts out of the headlines.. she didn't support the racist apartheid regime. You can't just make things up because you didn't like her. She hated apartheid but realised banning goods from South Africa would have caused huge problems in that country. Putting millions of black workers out of work was not the way to solve the issue, as time has proved. If I was Cameron id be disappointed her death has knocked the benefit cuts off the headlines!

Of course benefit fraud should be clamped down upon but there are a lot of people who work damn hard who receive benefits too you know? Regular average working families. Benefit fraud is responsible for around 1.2billion quid. Tax avoidance on the other hand is responsible for around £25billion...

Agree completely Daz. Love or loathe her, she at least made sure Britain was hated throughout the world, whereas now ....................... Compared to now we were everyones darling in the 80s under MT. At least when she sent us to war she didn't lie to the british public to justify it, like certain new labour PMs I could mention.

UK were 4th Division and heading for Non League when she took power. Then sorted out the Unions. The economy would never have recovered until she made the changes which were necessary. We were the sick man of Europe and surely every could see that and the car industry for example were an absolute joke.
Significantly a lot of other countries(but not Cuba--Scargill used to have his holidays there) followed her line.
Eventually she went too far but that`s what often happens with politicians.

Is a terrorist not a terrorist if you support the cause he is fighting for? I don't know- maybe he becomes a freedom fighter. If Thatcher had not regarded Mendela as a terrosist the time the South African government would have understandably asked why he isn't but the IRA 'freedom fighters' at the time were, so in that way Thatcher was in a no win situation. Perhaps cameron should remember that rather than critisising with the benefit of hindsight and how history turned out?
Either way it took a culture change in SA to bring about the end of apartheid and throwing many millions of black south africans into even deeper poverty than they already had wasn't the way forward. So i think Thatcher got that one right and the fact apartheid ended just a few years later shows that.

At least she won't have to run the gauntlet of passing the thousands of pensioners she starved or froze to death. It will be anything but freezing where SHE is going.

And whilst some her econmic polices stood well for a period (she had no plan for the destruction of the northern industries, and yes i know the unions didnt help) we are now paying for them! Yes the PM's since are just as guilty for not correcting them as they all rolled on the good times off it, and this current lot are clueless on the issue. Thats the big problem with all politcians, no long term planning! I'll give her the Falklands and the Iranian Embassy but she had a hell of a lot to answer for too.

How about; Whereas now, her successors have turned Britain into a laughing stock, where the worlds' terrorist scum are protected by our absurd human rights laws and where immigation has spiralled totally out of control, irrespective of it's impact on public services / the fact that the country was 'full' years ago!
