Atkinson, Booty and Trialist score in win

Huddersfield Town’s Under-18 side stepped up its preparation for the Professional Development League 2 season with a 3-1 pre-season win at York City on Friday afternoon.

Town’s side, managed by Professional Development Coaches Frankie Bunn and Tony Carss, played particularly well in the first half and went into the interval two goals to the good.

Midfielder Ben Atkinson opened the scoring in the 20th minute, thanks in part to good work from winger Jake Charles. Fresh from his impressive appearance as a substitute for the Under-21s at Emley on Thursday night, Charles went on the outside of the full back and pulled the ball back to the trialist. His shot was blocked, but fell into the path of Atkinson – who made no mistake in firing home.

Under-16 winger Regan Booty doubled the advantage on the stroke of the half hour. Charles did well again in the build-up, cutting the ball back into the path of his teammate who fired low into the goal.

A scrappy second-half ensued and York got back into the game via a corner but Town’s trialist striker made sure of the result in the final minute of the game, picking up a good through ball from substitute Fraser Horsfall before slotting the ball home.

LOAN WATCH 12/08/13

A check on the progress of loan stars Chris Atkinson and Jordan Sinnott

Town midfielders Chris Atkinson and Jordan Sinnott were in action this weekend for their respective loan clubs.

Atkinson’s Tranmere Rovers earned their first point of the season against Crawley while Sinnott’s Bury lost out to a late goal at Oxford United.

Atkinson has featured in all three of Tranmere’s opening games and scored his first goal for the Club during the midweek victory over Mansfield.

Rovers Manager Ronnie Moore praised Atkinson’s contribution after the game: “I thought tonight he showed what a player he can be. He got on it, he passed it and he will get goals.”

Sinnott made his first appearance for Kevin Blackwell’s Bury as a 63rd minute substitute on Saturday and began the move which resulted in Tom Soares equalising. The midfielder is pictured celebrating with the former Crystal Palace midfielder.

Charles has hand in all three goals

Town’s Under-18 side kicked off their Professional Development League season in style at Canalside on Saturday morning, beating visitors Coventry City by two goals.

Jake Charles (pictured), playing just behind the striker, had a hand in all three goals, which were converted by Will Boyle, Regan Booty and Rekeil Pyke.

In windy conditions on the top canal pitches, Town had by far the better of the first half and deservedly led by two goals at the interval. They had to be patient, with the first coming in the 41st minute – second year centre back Boyle turning home Charles’ cross.

The second goal came in quick succession, courtesy of excellent play from Charles. The tall second year scholar dribbled from his own box to the opposition’s, taking on three players in the process, before crossing for under-16 midfielder Booty to head past the ‘keeper.

Coventry scrambled a goal back just before the hour mark after Town failed to properly clear a free-kick, but the result was confirmed with 14 minutes left. Charles sent Booty clear of the Coventry defence and Regan intelligently drew the goalkeeper before sliding a pass to under-16 colleague Rekeil Pyke, leaving the striker with the easy task of sliding the ball into the vacant net.

There was still time for Pyke to rattle the crossbar with a header in the 79th minute from a cross by the dangerous Booty.

Smashing young shot stopper is Wilczynski. Town have done very well with youth keepers over the years, a few of them gaining International recognition.

Not that I've seen that much of him, but from what I have seen and heard, Wilczynski looks a very good prospect, and could quite easily end up becoming 2nd choice behind Smithies over the next couple of seasons, perhaps even really push for a starting place.

NEW HEAD OF ACADEMY RECRUITMENT

Bryan Glover joins Town’s Academy staff

Huddersfield Town has appointed Bryan Glover as its new Head of Academy Recruitment.

Bryan has taken on the role, which was vacated by Steve Smith earlier in the summer, with immediate effect and further strengthens Town’s recruitment structure.

Bryan’s primary role is to identify talented young players to join the Huddersfield Town Academy from the Foundation phase through every age group in the structure.

The training and enhancement of the Club’s Academy scouting personnel will also be a key responsibility for Town’s new Head of Academy Recruitment.

Glover worked in the scouting team at West Ham United for 15 years as the Club gained a reputation as one of the leading football Academies in the country, with the likes of Michael Carrick and Joe Cole emerging through the ranks during his time at Upton Park.

Bryan subsequently joined Burnley as a senior member of the Clarets’ scouting team in June 2011 under the management of Eddie Howe, departing his role at Turf Moor following Howe’s return to Bournemouth in January 2013.

Huddersfield Town’s Academy Manager Mark Lillis explained:

“Ross Wilson and I went through a thorough process to identify an appropriate individual for this role at what is an important time in the Academy’s development.

“Despite a number of impressive applicants, Bryan was the outstanding candidate during our recruitment process due to his experience, reputation and track record in the field of recruitment at Academy level.

“He has a very good understanding of the processes and relevant geography through his time at West Ham and Burnley and his footballing ethos fits perfectly with that of Huddersfield Town.

“Bryan will coordinate our recruitment activity throughout all Academy age groups, with a particular focus on the Foundation (8-11 year olds) and Youth Development (12-16 year olds) phases. Furthermore, Bryan will help to assess potential opportunities in the Professional Development phase.

“He will also play a major part in delivering our Academy recruitment strategy by developing and enhancing our existing staffing, expanding our ‘footprint’ in a realistic manner and managing the processes involved in recruiting at Academy level.

“We have made considerable progress in achieving category 2 status, but we still have a long way to go to achieve what we all want here. Bryan’s appointment is one stage further forward for us.”

Bryan commented:

“I’m delighted to be joining such an ambitious club. Huddersfield Town has a growing reputation within football at Academy level and I’m really excited about this opportunity, which will allow me to influence the recruitment strategy at under-18 level.

I watched the U21 pre-season friendly at Dulwich. Allinson didn't impress me at all, didn't command his area and doesn't look strong enough to be a goalie. Wilczynski came on after about an hour and, by contrast, really looked the part. Perfect build for a goalie, strong and confident and made two-or-three excellent saves.

Boyle and Booty net in superb win

Town’s Under-18 side made it two wins from two games in the new Professional Development League 2 season this morning courtesy of a superb 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest.

Although the hosts took the lead, the young Terriers showed superb character to battle back, with goals coming from second year centre back William Boyle and under-16 midfielder Regan Booty.

Holmes and Carr secure first win of the season

Duane Holmes produced a man of the match performance as Town’s U21s recorded their first victory of the season.

The talented midfielder equalised for the Terriers following Danny Pugh’s opener before laying on the assist for striker Daniel Carr to score the winner.

Town’s winning margin could have been greater with both Matt Crooks and Cristian Lopez seeing one-on-one chances superbly saved by Leeds' stopper.

In a first half of few chances, Crooks’ was the only gilt-edged one. Town’s Spanish striker Cristian Lopez did well to play the midfielder in, but he failed to hit the back of the net with a left-footed shot.

Leeds, whose side included the likes of Sam Byram and David Norris, looked dangerous on the counter and went close during the opening stages of the match when Norris produced a good save from Lloyd Allinson.

The equilibrium in the score line lasted just six minutes of the second half before Leeds’ left-back Danny Pugh smashed home a free-kick from 12 yards.

It didn’t take Town long to draw level, though, and there won’t be many better goals scored at Canalside Sports Complex this season. Duane Holmes picked up the ball 40 yards out from goal and embarked on a surging run that took him past four Leeds players before he cutely slid the ball home from 10 yards.

Crooks fired over for Town before Daniel Carr grabbed the winner in the 76th minute. Holmes was once again at the heart of the move with a lofted ball into the path of the unmarked Carr. The striker still had work to do, though, and he did it with aplomb; rounding the ‘keeper before tapping into an empty net.

Lopez should have made it three during the final ten minutes, but like Crooks, he was thwarted by the impressive Leeds ‘keeper.
