@davidhartrick £1.5m for Oliver Norwood is, in a different way, as extraordinary as Leeds getting £11m for McCormack, good luck Reading...
If we get 1.5m for Norwood we've had their pants down!!! Well done to all Involved

Good luck to her and if she's got anything to do with Norwood's move then she deserves even more praise. It kind of changes your perception of football agents when the daughter of one of the most honest people in the game is breaking onto the scene.

Pretty sure man utd have a massive sell on, something like 40% of any profit, so it won't be the earner it sounds. hes frustrating but we have other players id rather see leave. The lad does have talent- maybe the next boss will get it out of him more often. Say we got £1.25+ though id guess we paid 350k for him, which would mean we still pocketed 900k. If we could up it so we got a 1m+ after paying utd i think it would be good business for a player with 1year left. Problem is, we keep him and he has a good season, he'll sign for someone else on a free...keep him and he has a bad season, we get nowt. Im not usually for selling our 'better' players but i feel with butterfield + coady as first choice we've already improved on norwood + clayton...so any extra money we can raise to spend on strengthening the rest of the team would see us better off I haven't read past page 3 of this thread, so apologies if I'm repeating what others have said, but I completely agree with ^^^this^^^. One little irony that occurs to me is that in Coady & Butterfield we have a couple of players who I would expect to compliment Norwood's attributes far better than Clayton & Hogg/Southern ever did. If we kept him it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he went on to have a brilliant season alongside them. However, he turns 24 just before the end of his contract & he could easily leave at the end of this season for nothing, regardless of how well he plays. He's already attracted Reading's interest with his form for us so far - if he shows what he's really capable of, we'd have great difficulty keeping hold of him as others would enter the fray (who wouldn't want a player of that quality on a free?). At the same time, we could offer him another contract, but the problem is he hasn't really earned one. Do we give him a longer deal in the hope that he comes good? I can see the appeal of that, but I have to say no. Although he had the wrong players alongside him, he still should have performed more consistently than he has - there is no guarantee that if we keep him, he'll be any better. Plus, the rest of the midfield is actually pretty good now. Coady looks quality, Butterfield a perfect foil for him gives us a very mobile midfield, with the additional ability of Majewski to create something - to be a matchwinner. What does Norwood offer that we can't get from those 3? Then there's the "pathways" - most of our most promising youth players are central midfielders. Norwood is another barrier to giving those players 1st team football. £1.25m is a good price for somebody who has under-performed, in the final year of their contract. We haven't "had Reading's pants down" because he may prove to be an excellent signing for them (he certainly has the ability to be). If he performs to his ability (and who knows, a fresh start could well be what he needs to kick-start his career a la Arfield) he could be worth far more than £1.25m. I like Ollie & I'm sorry to see him go, but this represents a good deal all round.

Personally I can't stand Norwood. And if selling him is the only way that I don't have to witness another one of his corners then I'm fine with that! You might see one when we play Reading at home this season. You can bet your house that he'll tear us a new arsehole when we play them in Feb.

A more than capable Butterfield as a replacement on last nights evidence. He has all of Norwood's better qualities and quite a few that he hasn't. Butterfield is just a bit sharper all round - on one viewing admittedly. Coady, Hogg and Butterfield looked a better balance than Clayton, Hogg and Norwood - but early days.
PS - every corner on or around the penalty spot.

Yep, the 18 year old who has one (1) first team appearance to his name. And Majewski isn't strictly a CM. How many games do you expect the back-up players to get? I wouldn't rely on Billing for 40+ games a season yet, but 7 or 8 appearances as back-up/competition over the course of the season doesn't seem unreasonable.

With Norwood you can look at it the way Wenger talked about not bringing Fabregas back to Arsenal in that it blocks Ramsey as he views him as his natural successor. The view was that bringing Fabregas back would send the wrong message to the younger players and block their route to the first team. Norwood is nowhere near that class but he is a barrier for the current CMs we have and we have to try and push Tronstad and Billing to try and take that spot. Norwood's time has probably therefore passed and we might as well wish him well and let him go.
