I'm pretty sure West Brom wouldn't have played those two against Brighton in the Premier League last season or this if they had survived. Cups tend to be used differently. Incidentally our brand new 21 year old striker has already played in a Premier League game for us. I suppose it depends on the maturity and ability of the individual. They don't all develop at the same rate, Aaron Mooy is a perfect example. You are quite right about playing them at the top level. I don’t pretend to know much about developing young footballers and the experience we have in the academy is pretty rock solid. It probably shows how hard it is for players to make that transition. We hear such good things about some of the youngsters I would like to see some make the first team. If we go down maybe there will be more chances. Certainly, one positive is our new coach has a reputation built on developing youth players in his previous employment.

We don't even play ours in cup games when we've made multiple changes and I'm talking about players we've developed, not signed from elsewhere. Evidence has shown in the past that players become better by playing with better players, whereas the ones we've loaned out to non leagues hardly ever come back to play in our first team whatever division we're in. Jack Hunt being an exception to that. I'm hoping that Siewert reverses that, otherwise its pointless having an academy. I'm not talking about suddenly pitching two or three young lads in at the deep end at the same time, but at least having one of them on the bench in certain games with a view to giving them a few minutes here and there, or maybe even a start when we're definitely down. Perhaps the brutal truth is they just aren't good enough for where we are/have been? How many have actually progressed beyond where we were when released?
I think that's correct. In the past the Academy hasn't produced players that were considered good enough to play in our first team in the championship or now in the premiership. A lot of those from our Academy over the last 15 years have ended up in league 1, league 2 or the non league. The handful that were considered good enough were given a chance. Smithies, Hunt etc. Holmes had to have a season playing at Scunthorpe before getting a chance with a Championship team. If I remember correctly we sent him out to Yeovil on loan, to get that experience, but at the time he wasn't good enough to get in their team. A bit like Williams last season couldn't get in at Bury and now can't get in at Barnsley, and we did give him a chance as a 17 year old in the cup match against Rotherham (remember the foul through? ). So, the old Academy structure was scrapped and a completely new philosophy developed. Hopefully, what they are trying to do with the Academy at the moment will produce a few Championship players over the next few seasons, which will hopefully mean they will ultimately become Premier League players with Town in the future :-)

It'll be interesting to see if this Rowe lad gets any opportunities (be it on the bench or training with the first team). He scored a couple of goals against Seville's kids this week and was also on the first team trip to Marbella a few weeks back. With Mbenza being out for a while and Siewert seemingly preferring to play with proper wingers it'd be nice to see a young lad given an opportunity, if he's good enough of course.

If the players develop then the results will take care of themselves, is the way I see things. Yes it’s a bit different when you are taking on adults when you are a kid, but when you are playing similar age groups it’s no excuse. So when you get a result like they have against the runaway leaders of a Spanish division, it’s a big thing and should be thought of that way.

But it should be top priority. Winning is something you learn and losing is something you never want to make a habit of. A champion team will always beat a team of champions, it’s what Huddersfield have built the foundations on, togetherness. Nobody can convince me that the result doesn’t matter. I’ve been in teams who’ve had no right to win games, but have won games because we knew how to win and the opposition weren’t ruthless in closing out a match. It’s a mentality. Practice is for trying different things, for learning techniques. Game time is for putting learnt techniques from practice into play, but most importantly, you must find a way to win even if that means going a step back to old techniques.

In the past, results were the top priority. It was all about the youth teams winning or doing well in their leagues and cups. Which they did. However, over the last 10 or 15 years how many of those academy players that won lots of matches went on to play with any regularity in the championship? The academy is there to develop players of real quality to be able to have long careers in Town first team. How many has the academy produced since we were promoted to the championship that are either currently in the squad or playing at other premier league or championship clubs? The club have taken a decision that the way they were going about things wasn't producing players of all good enough quality. So instead of just continuing to do the same thing in the hope for a better outcomes, they are trying a different methods. Surely if something is not meeting it's aims and objectives, then it would be better to try a different approach

Surely if something is not meeting it's aims and objectives, then it would be better to try a different approach I agree with you JJ with regards to how they are taking a new approach. My comments are mainly directed at the academy making winning the priority when playing other academies and using games against adult teams as the place to learn. I think it’s very important for the confidence, read mindset, for these players to see the results on the scoreboard as well as on the pitch. Problem solving, many will call it plan B through to Z, so that you can win games is just as important for development. Our first team has demonstrated that they don’t have the ability to problem solve, over and over, by not being able to win a game in the PL when trailing in a match. In the latest match, it sounds like the management made a change at halftime which got the best out of the team. It’s just as much about the manager making good decisions at academy level, as it is about the players adapting that decision. Lets face it, we are interested in developing both better management along with better players. TBH I think the result against Sevilla is huge for the development of all in the academy set up.

Thought the same when I read it. It is how I envisaged it being when it was announced. I guess time factors and having to wait for the main recruitment guy meant they had to put together a more scattergun approach to recruitment last year. Sounds like there is a very well thought out plan moving forwards and it will hopefully help to produce some first team players down the line.

It's looking like we're taking note of how Brentford's youth set up is operating. Looking to Europe, taking players from other academies, focusing recruitment from 16 upwards.

I think there are a few from Huddersfield
I think one of the lads we signed from Man Utd last season is from Huddersfield.
I do know that the club have scouts and coached active in local junior grassroots football. So they are certainly keeping an eye on talented youngsters.
