Its abit easy to fill the team with Yorkies.... But Adam Lyth and Lees would in my opinion flourish at test level. That is if cook was to take a break and possibly lees in the place of bell (Maybe not yet). Butler in-place of prior and woakes or Tom Smith instead of stokes. Finn for Plunkett, If we are going for a spin bowler id go for Ollie Rayner

Steven Finn had the yips for about 6 months, he's only just managed to land the ball and now you want to replace Plunkett for him. Barmy. And Ollue Rayner? No way on this planet is he a test spinner. Lyth I can understand, Robson gets bowled far to much as an opener, I don't think he's good enough and the lads not English. Carberry should count himself the unluckiest test cricketer to play for England.

How typical of the current malaise is it that we shoehorn foreigners into the england team and we can't even get ones who are any good.

The ECB/management have made a complete hash of it as far as I can see. They're backed into a corner after sacking Peterson and plumping for Cook and perhaps more importantly Peter Moores. They are now afraid to acknowledge that they were wrong for fear of looking idiots. No easy remedy if they won't admit their mistakes I'm afraid.
I don't think I've ever heard Sir Geoff as apoplectic on the TMS podcast today.
A bit left field, but what England need is a captain - Eoin Morgan could be the man to take us through the summer on a temporary basis. an average of only 30 in test match cricket is not good, but something has to change.

Morgan isn't the answer. Felt a bit sorry for Cook watching that shambles today: when anger turns to pity you know it's time to go!
The blame starts at the top for me - Downton is a joke, Moores well out of his depth and Cook a dead man walking. No point tinkering with the team when the rot runs right to the pinnacle of the governing body.

Agreed. KP is cook and moores defining moment. If they had won games after that watershed moment, then all would now be forgotten. Prior and other senior figures were central in his departure and now can't score a run.... This is a group of senior players that ran a phoney twitter account in KPs name.
Made a stand, but really was it the wrong stand to make. KP always comes across as very Knowledgeable and I think given the right conditions would have been great in bringing a new generation through, rather than the stale cook, bell, prior role models.

Patel as spinner? Gets runs too and is more of a spinner than ali. Still keep ali tho, think that the lad has the ability.

Plenty of a bit of this and a bit of that batsmen/spinners have turned out to be true spinners, Afridi as an example. I think that they are hoping to really work on his bowling so that he becomes a frontline spinner.

What I would give to have Mike Brearley as captain to manage Peterson. Mind you, Brearley was also out of his depth as a test match batsman.

Compton wasn't unlucky Kenny, the lad isn't and never was a test opener. He was shoe horned in because he got 1000 runs before July. He was to similar to Cook in his method - Slow. Carberry played well in a bad team against the crims, he has been treat badly. Just like Compton but Compton shouldn't have been picked from the start. A bit left field, but what England need is a captain - Eoin Morgan could be the man to take us through the summer on a temporary basis. an average of only 30 in test match cricket is not good, but something has to change. Regarding Morgan, he's not a test match batsman. He's too weak on Off to Fifth stump. He got found out when he played against Pakistan, he got his hundred after being dropped 3 times. He's a one day player at best and he's not English and as Captainslapper said, we can't find good English players so we pick bad non English players. We have to move away from Colpaks. Robson is a typical Reactive selection of Moores and Cook. Got a few runs early season and he's picked. Against SA and Aus he will be found out IMO. Your spot on Kenny regarding the ECB, I think they are an utter shambles. The consistancy has gone, they select short term rather than long term thinking it will get them back to numer one. When you bowl India out for 300 on a track that was greener than the village uncovered wicket I played on this weekend you won't make it to number one anytime soon. Moores should be no where near this england side, he was a shambles before and he doesn't have what it takes. I've got all the answers really, don't know why the ECB don't employ me.

Agree with most of you chaps. A bigger man would've kept KP. Reeked of downtown ego that decision. It's a shame as ECB did well in last decade or so.
Robson ain't good enough.
I would drop Prior as he isn't fit enough. I'd play Foster. Always been a clas act behind the stumps.
I don't know what's happened to Ian bell. If be tempted to drop him too. A break and some reality.
Jordan would be back in for Stokes who I would leave with Durham for rest of he summer.
B& A are fatigued clearly but we can't afford to drop them. They're both absolutely superb performers over many years.
I'm a big fan of Samit Patel. Quality batsmen, for me a better bowler than Ali. So what if he's a bit if a fatty. Never hurt David Boon. That said I think Ali is a good prospect to bat at 6.
At Hampshire I'd play:
Cooked Carberry Ballance Bell Root Ali Foster Jordan Broad Plunkett Anderson
Perhaps Patel for bell if it'll take spin & root at 4. Carbs deserves another chance & at his home ground.

Prior stepped down for the summer through injury. That injury being the inexorable passage of time.

Bell's problem has been he's been facing a ball about 10 overs old and he is used to batting later in the game. Always the same in English conditions with a Duke. No coincidence he got his 3 centuries in Oz with a Kookaburra and little lateral movement.

Broad has also a knee niggle that is to be operated on at the end of this series, but it is affecting him, so get it done now.

You mention Foster as a replacement and while Foster is thee best gloveman we have ever produced IMO I'd also say that the 2nd best Keeper in the country currently is Chris Read. Read isn't as good with gloves but is better with bat than Foster. Crucially with Read, he's captained Notts and very well for 7 years. Cook and Prior to rest, Carbs in and Read as captain? It will never happen but always worth asking the question.

Nick Compton has played nine tests and scored two hundreds (avg: 30+) not too dusty for a test match opener. But; although he has an illustrious name he's really a South African so (as has been said above) shouldn't be in the side....even though he has performed creditably...
I can't see England coming good without a strong character leading (sorry Mr. Cook I have to agree that your aren't he) Micheal Vaughan, Nasty Nasser would do but they're a bit long in the tooth... Looking for a Brearley type figure need the selectors look any further than our own highly experienced skipper (and Town supporter) -- not that I want the Yorkshire bid to return to their rightful place as Champions to be derailed! Paul Collingwood must (after leading Durham to the top) be in with a shout as a stopgap but the field is very small...
The idea of promoting Root (by inference comparing his lack of years with Graham Smith when HE took over the S.A. job) is, I believe, rather unfair. Totally different characters - apart from that Root isn't even sure of his place in the side (he WAS dropped in convict land)
As we are all aware the treatment and handling of K.P. (for once I agree with posh boy Piers) is at the root of the problems. Again, though, he ain't English (by any stretch of the imagination) but the approach of our hierarchy is, once again, highlighted by this shabby man management...
Not a very bright outlook with an ashes series next year...

I think it's clear Cook will be captain the rest of the summer.
I'd be happy with foster or read in as wicket keeper. Buttler needs to improve his keeping considerably before he can be considered for the test side imo. He wasn't even keeping last season as kieswetter had the gloves.
Bell maybe just burnt out after back to back ashes and playing one dayers too.
On a positive note we do have some good youngsters coming thru in county cricket not least at YCC.
Jack Brooks looks handy. Lyth has now found real consistency and Lees is a great prospect.
Finn seems to be finding some rhythm again and taking wickets, he will come again.
There's the lad Overton at Somerset and Stoneman and borthwick at Durham can both bat big.

The dearth of any credible spinners in the new age of the spin bowler is woeful tho and ECB should be ashamed we not managed to produce anyone in nearly ten years of planning & investment.

I read Micheal Vaughan's book a while ago in which he outlined fairly clearly why Foster was dropped in favour of Geraint Jones, more to do with communication (a vital part of the role of the keeper) that catching or stumping ability. Perhaps communication skillsare an important aspect of the job of captain?

Stokes has a big future with England but after his transgressions and injuries I feel he was brought back too soon. He can't buy a run since his Perth ton. 5 ducks in last ten innings and average of 4.
Plus Jordan did little wrong. Bowled fairly economically, scored handy quick runs and he's blinding in the field. Useful when we're fielding for long periods as we are of late!
I'm all for continuity generally but we haven't won for 11 matches and some fresh faces and rests for burnt out mainstays makes sense to me.

The problem with KP is that he was crap as captain, but when they took it off him anyone who got it after that was going to have a problem from him and his nassive ego. He stood up, said Cook was a shite captain and said "who's with me?". It's deliberately devisive and so the selectors had a problem. They (rightly, in my opinion) backed the skipper.
Cook is not the reason England are losing matches and series. He is one of many. When we need a good batting performance, we don't get it - when we need the bowlers to step up, we don't get it.
One other thing I've been surprised by is why Adil Rashid hasn't been given a chance (perhaps a bit of Yorkshire bas from me) but he has been unplayable at times for Yorkshier. He's getting turn on day 1 on some wickets, and yet he never gets a mention.
