It's a gamble. If he can get 5 goals, it will be gamble paid off, anymore and it's bargain territory. Perhaps calling him a legend today is a bit strong but at the time when he was doing the business for us, he was considered a legend. Saved our bacon numerous times. Many happy memories of corner flags being kicked and "Vaughan, Vaughan will tear you apart again" ringing around the ground. Shame about his injuries, but like has been discussed to death already, he would not have been playing for us if he could be relied upon to stay fit. £600k would have bought an ear or a finger. He'd have cost millions. Also shame about the circumstances how he left Town under a bit of a cloud. Thought going back to his boyhood dream club would reinvigorate him but his tenure at Brum fizzled out pretty quickly. After his very good season just gone, he deserves one more crack with a big club. Good luck!

Absolutely nothing against Vaughan, he was class for the majority of his time with us. But that is not the type of signing a club who will be aiming to be promoted to the premier league need to be making IMO.

Doesn't even seem like a gamble to me. 900k is NOTHING to a club like Sunderland. What's the risk if it doesn't work out? He's not going to be their main striker that's for sure, so if he gets 5 goals off the bench next season then that's probably a decent return.

Loved Vaughan when he was here. Pace, power, strength and finishing.
Shame he couldn't stay fit but then he probably wouldn't have been anywhere near Town at that stage of his career if he could.

Saw Vaughan twice for Bury in a week at AFC Wimbledon last season. They lost 5-0 and 5-1. He scored their goal. I thought he looked heavier and had lost some pace, though he actually did OK last season and played a lot of games.

A bigger car crash of a club than Villa - can see them dropping to L1 with the quality in the Championship next season. Think SG has made a (footballing if not financial) big mistake going there. Agree in that I can't see them above bottom half. Can't see Grayson taking them down either though. Preston, on the other hand, weren't far off the great playoff gamble, big surprise to see Grayson give up on a project halfway through. Bury have essentially swapped Vaughan for Beckford, Clark taking an even bigger gamble. ... and trousered £900k as part of the deal. Bigger gamble?, sounds more like sensible business to me.

If he can stay fit (big if) I fancy Vaughan to score more goals than Jordan Rhodes this season.

Assombalonga spends half his career out injured and is supposedly up for a £14m move. In that context, this looks a pretty decent deal!

Lee Clark could buy a lot of the 2011/2012 lads with 900k. Roberts and tommy Miller could do a job at bury.

I think if Vaughan and Beckford had stayed fit under Grayson we would have finished a lot higher up the league. I know there's plenty on here that are bitter towards these two but they did a job, it's a shame Vaughan left under a cloud tho. Beckford against wolves away was one of the best from a town player too.

£900,000 bid from Sunderland today. Not sure if it's ever been mentioned on here, but could he have done a job back here for us ?

Bury looking to replace him with Lee Novak. Their carpets will be very dirty then. Leg End for us. Leg end or ledgend if it's the latter, no he wasn't far far from.

He'll surely NEVER pass the medical? As was said on another thread, you don't "pass" or "fail" a medical in this context. The medicos will give an exhaustive medical and physical report to the player and the buying club (with the players written permission) and highlight any issues they feel are relevant. It is up to the club how they then proceed. When Boothy re-signed for Town we chose to overlook certain issues that other clubs may not have done.

Tbf McGeady and Vaughan are probably 2 of Sunderlands better players, they have some right dross on their books.
