If we keep scoring around 2 goals a game, if we are looking to strength an area it has to be defense. 4 goals in 3 is not the best record.

Am I the only one who thinks he was fouled on the penalty? He jumps to head the ball away and is nudged by the striker whilst his feet are off the ground, and from that point his balance is all over the place. Clear free kick in my opinion. Anybody else back me up on this?

More nitpicking then anything.

not much point discussing/arguing about it.. the manager is picking him..
it might turn into a 'I told you so' moment but that does not help much either..
if he stays in the team as long as we are winning I hope he plays all season.. first and foremost is to win football matches using whatever method the manager chooses, at the moment he is doing that with the team and tactics he selects..
its not 'who plays' as much as 'how we play'.,..

It's easy to say we conceded two at Shrewsbury so must be better with Hudson. That isn't taking in to account the fact that Brentford and Newcastle wasted some good chances (a couple against Brentford that Hudson handed to them on a plate) while Shrewsbury took theirs, partly due to soft midfielders and poor goalkeeping. Also not forgetting that Cranie was at full back which usually seems to equal a few goals against.
We have had some clean sheets with Hudson in the team over the last 24 months, we've also taken some embarrassing beatings. If he's still proving himself after 10 games then I'll hold my hands up and give credit where it's due

Don't rate him, never will, seen him have far too many terrible games that have cost us. Having said that Wagner sees something and Powell before him so full credit to him if he played well today (I wasn't there). The guy cost us a lot of points last season. But he seems to be a good captain. Am not sure on him, ad like to see a replacement, but if he keeps doing well fair enouth. To be fair the Lord and saviour Nahki Wells also cost us points last season with some of his horrendous misses. Wolves at home immediately springs to mind. It's fashionable to only slate Hudson though.

Take a look at the first highlight here. Once again Hudson getting lucky that a mistake isn't punished. Shrewsbury punished our mistakes

Its called an opinion mate. You don't have to be an expert to have one, but i don't think you have to be an expert to see this one anyway. I get the experience thing wagner mentions. he clearly feels that makes up for the obvious problems of having the slowest least mobile player in the division ( all 4 divisions probably) in the back 4 and so far the gamble is paying off it has to be said. But seriously, if we're going to progress as a club, that can't go on for long and one of the alternatives has to step up to the plate. IMO Keith of course! Bearing that in mind, what are your opinions on the Newcastle centre backs yesterday? I wasn't at the game so don't have one. I don't have one on hudson yesterday either, other than the pen looked harsh on the highlights.

I don't have one on hudson yesterday either, other than the pen looked harsh on the highlights. But why did the penalty happen? Because once again he can't judge the flight of a ball, very basic error for someone so experienced. Did it earlier for the header which Gayle fluffed too. Also did it against Brentford, see 1 min 50 on the video below. Misreading the flight and no longer being able to spring properly is not a good combination and I fear for him against Gestede who is the first proper target man we have faced this season

Take a look at the first highlight here. Once again Hudson getting lucky that praisea mistake isn't punished. Shrewsbury punished our mistakes Have to admit I was full of praise for him walking away from St James yesterday but having now seen the highlights you realize just how lucky we were really that none of his mistakes were punished. There's no doubt that his leadership on the pitch and popularity with the players is a massive asset but he really is a major liability at times. I honestly thought Hefele would step in immediately as his direct replacement with Hudson playing a handful of games but at the minute it looks like Hef is 4th choice and I can't for the life in me figure out why. Hudson is a great guy with the perfect attitude for this team but so was Peter Clarke at one point and by the time he left his defensive ability was shocking.

Hefele and Schindler are left footed and Wagner seems to want a right footer on the right. Schindler is bound to play most weeks when he's our record signing. Hefele did look very two footed in the friendlies though so maybe he will get a chance on the right side

I can't knock him yesterday, the penalty was harsh and overall I thought we defended fairly well. Newcastle created very little and what did came in the air from set pieces and the cross that Ritchie headed wide. I think we look a bit susceptible from set pieces, that needs looking at. We are still conceding goals though, which is a bit of a worry, over a goal a game so far.

Obvious deficiency - who made you the expert on player selection. Its called an opinion mate. I expect that it won't go on for long, and that one of the alternatives will step up to the plate later in the season. Without Hudson though, our defence (particularly the centre of defence) would be worryingly short of experience. That experience will come with games played in the Championship and I expect that his role will become smaller as the season goes on. If he's still first choice to lead the team out this time next year I will be surprised, but for now he's invaluable. IMO, of course!

A cracking performance and result and half the posts are about Hudson's frailties and Powell, with Wells' supposed 'horrendous' misses to boot.
Tedious.

Wagner is happy for now.. we are all fairly happy for now but its footie and changes from week to week.. Id be happier with Hudson if he just cleared it everytime and nobody gave him the ball to distribute.. just do defending in its simplest form..?

You could say exactly the same about Schindler. I don't think you could. Schindler gave the ball away once in a bad area that I can remember. Hudson gave the ball away 3 times in the first 8 mins. How you can compare the 2 performances is beyond me. Schindler had 2 5 minute spells, 1 in each half, when he was all over the shop. Hudson bailed him out for 1 of the chances, there were another couple we got a way with as well. But people choose to only see Hudson's mistakes.

I'm inclined to agree with you to some extent - people love a scape goat. But then I genuinely think he makes a lot of mistakes that are hard not to notice.

Also - I can forgive Schindler for a a few shakey moments, he's new to the English game and it's his what, 2nd competitive game? Hypothetically, if ther performances were on a par - what's the captains excuse?

Think you'll find most people have acknowledged that Hudson is a great leader and important team figure, so disagree that people only look at his mistakes. It's clear that a lot of the reason Hudson is in the side is to make sure the new lads have someone who can make them aware of how the game is played in this division, and him doing that is pivotal to our success, but to a degree it's at the cost of our overall defensive ability. Every defender makes mistakes but Hudson's are quite frequent, yes he makes some great tackles and interceptions, but his overall reading of the game and lack of speed really do put us in a lot of danger at times. As I said earlier it's very similar to the Peter Clarke situation, you've got a great character and leader who embodies passion and fighting spirit, but unfortunately not the ability to match, nowhere near infact.

The only game he hasn't played in this season is the only game we lost. Don't underestimate his value It really isn't that simple. We lost lots of games he played in last season Shrewsbury had fewer chances than Brentford and Newcastle but grabbed two goals because they punished our mistakes/got lucky The logic on here seems to be that it's fine for Hudson to keep making mistakes as long as the opposition don't capitalise on them

Hudson is fine, away. Block defence, attack on the break. At home or when we dominate and we get hit on the break, not so fine.
So who is the next weakest link? Let's say Hudson gets injured and the back four plays well, who is the next luxury?
