Have you guys heard yourselves recently. We are rumoured to be signing a 21 year old current international for £5M and some people are whinging about it. It’s embarrassing, it really is. It comes with the Premier League mate. Half of Stoke fans now moan if we sign anybody for less than £10m and don’t seem to realise before we went up our record as about 700k. !!! I understand that pal but stoke have been in the premier league at least 10 years. For us long servers it wasn’t that long ago that we’d all be chuffed just paying a fee for a player. Some people have short memories!

Wouldn't say great, stoke fans think that he is slow and can't do nothing but if we do sign him I think Wagner will make him a better play and get the best out of him yes!

I think £5m for a young player with PL experience represents good value in this market - can't see much risk in this deal tbh. Might not set the world alight but pleased to see us adding much needed depth to the squad.

For £5m he's probably worth a go, especially at only 21.

LMAO. Teddy bear arms and legs flying everywhere because we are only signing a relegated international player for £5 million - even though he's going to the World Cup with Egypt. Apparently, the best bits that youtube has to offer and the opinions of a handful of Stoke fans suggest that he is not good enough for the mighty Huddersfield Town. And we call Leeds fans arrogant! Well said Kenny. Some of the comments from 'Town fans' on here that have never even seen him play are a fucking disgrace. Oh and we need to leave the 'Billy big bollocks' bullshit to such as Wednesday fans. FFS.

That is a fair summary of postings and it is a bit of a scary read when on so many occasions they could easily be describing VLP. However nearer the end the general view seems to be he does have potential, went backwards under Hughes and that we might have ourselves a bargain (lots of wishing for sell on clauses).

As plenty of other Stoke fans have said, when he joined us he was severely overhyped, mainly by supporters from Egypt who saw him as the second coming of Ronaldo, Neymar and Messi rolled into one (our official Facebook page was swamped for months and would often go into an Egyptian meltdown when 'Coach Hughes' didn't play him ahead of Arnautovic, Shaqiri, Walters etc).
I think his problems at Stoke came down to 1) He was built up to be something he wasn't by his International supporters - in fairness he was great in the Egyptian League but the Premier League is a massive step up, and 2) the absolute mess of a club we became in Hughes' final 18 months in charge . Nobody would have flourished in those conditions.
For me he looks like a player who would benefit from dropping down a level, getting his confidence up against lesser teams and bouncing back from there. He doesn't want to play for us though so we're best moving him on quickly.
I wouldn't say he's 'slow' although pace and getting past a defender at speed certainly isn't his game. He holds on to the ball up well, can beat a player with a bit of skill but his end product is very frustrating. He rarely shoots and tends to try and do too much before losing possession. He's still young though so £5 million is probably worth the gamble if Wagner feels he can get his career back on track.

Pretty certain Chelsea fans didn't think that much of Mo Salah when he left them either. He looks OK now though 😁

When judging a signee you can't look at the extremes. Sure he could end up being worthless and leaving on a free transfer or could develop and surprise like vardy but those results would be outliers. It's better to evaluate based on what is the result in the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile of possibility. 25th percentile: doesn't develop. Continues to look like a potential lower league star that can't cut it in the prem. Can sell for 2-3 million. 50th percentile: develops some. Becomes premier league quality and is often part of the starting 11/key substitutes. Could sell on for 7-10 million due to potential and would allow for the sale of one of vlp/quaner/kachunga 75th percentile: develops quite a bit and becomes an above average to good premier league player. Value increases to around 15 million. Maybe my evaluation of the player is way off but I don't see how this would be a poor decision to sign. Seems like a low risk/high potential reward move. Based on the 5 million rumored price tag, this would be a lower risk move than the Pritchard transfer (which wasn't a poor choice).

A little underwhelming I guess but he's young and I trust Wagner and his staff. Hopefully we will get to see him in action at the world cup

This signing would tell me that one of Sabiri, Kachunga, Quaner, Ince or VLP is going.

Shocking thread. We’ve made a habit of signing promising players when they’ve had a setback in their careers.
We signed Kachunga, Lössl and Depoitre when their big money moves hadn’t paid off. We signed Schindler when his stock was low because of everything going on around him at 1860. We loaned Kongolo because he was struggling to settle at Monaco.
If Sobhi had shone at Stoke last season, we could easily be paying £25M+ and breaking our wage structure for him. Whilst we have untold Premier League millions now, we still need to be intelligent with our money if we’re going to continue to punch above our weight. Calculated risks on potential have served us well and will continue to do so.

Played 60 minutes international football last night, aged 21. Going to the World Cup and we’ve signed him for 5M ? If he scores or assists ONE goal like that in Russia this summer his value will quadrupled before we even kick off the season !

Good signing. Bags of potential, Messi would struggle to look anything special in that Stoke side. Have faith in Wagner to take him to th next level

Good post, most of us realise the financial model of the Club hasn't changed, just some of the sums involved are now more. We need to seek out 'bargains', cannot compete with the real money Clubs and all of our Players are for sale for the right amount. I understand this and have no issue with this as the Clubs strategy. Infact, I welcome it.

Confirmed by the Egyptian FA: Would pull out of the deal based on that strapping on his knees.
