Tough choice for our Belgium game - Win or draw and we have easier next game but likely Brazil in the quarters OR lose to Belgium and get into tougher next game but overall easier quarter final opponent. I think a loss is in order for the Columbia followed by Sweden or Switzerland route to the semi final. Japan followed by Brazil or Mexico semi final route is to be avoided if possible Are Brazil really any good? They look average to me, unless they are holding back. Brazil don't worry me at all. they actually don't have to be that good if we are afraid of them.. we might fall into the trap of playing the shirts, the badge and the history, rather than a 2018 team..

Credibility lost with the Uruguay comment Oti in 54 they were the holders of the world cup having beaten Brazil at the maracana in 1950. You need a history lesson pal. Any International football before the Mighty Magyars does not really count. Uruguay failed to qualify in 1950..but got in when 4 other teams pulled out. In the tournament proper they were supposed to be in a 4 team group. All pulled out including France eaving them with one match! They got to the final group with an 8-0 win v Bolivia...who also only qualified when teams dropped out. It was a shambles.

I cannot for the life of me get why England are 7/1! 94th minute v mighty Tunisia then a thumping of a country who won 3 from 10 in qualifying. A backwater that does not have a professional league and has only ONE proper grassed pitch! A loss to Belgium reserves and we are now world-beaters. Big reality check on its way. Must say...very friendly in Kaliningrad but what an inbred and undeveloped place. I am a 56 year old bearded fat bloke...the locals kept calling me Beckham! I look like i have eaten him. Started drinking Champers at 10am...bought 2 bottles of vodka at 2am...a good effort. 2 hours to get in at the border...real James Bond/political posturing bullshit.

I think the England odds represent the thoughts on the other teams displays so far, other than Croatia..

I doubt we will win it but we are in with a chance along with 6 or 7 others, no stand out team as yet but but it's starting to get interesting.

The fact you can't bring yourself to acknowledge it was our reserves too makes your opinions clearly biased against england, so pretty worthless in a discussion about our chances oti.

I am afraid all our players are reserves Slapps. I have just been to Russia twice and been to probably 250 England games. A fact is a fact...and we are crap. Nothing to do with my bias. Some of the skill, vision and desire i have seen is amazing...not seen a thing from England yet. Big stage tonight...lets hope they do not fall flat.

They're not hopeless but they are not by any means brilliant...11/10 to win in 90 mins tonight reflects this. They are 7/1 overall because there are probably 5 teams better equipped than them to win. If they fall flat...who really cares, two results against average to rank awful opposition does not make them any better than they were before a ball was kicked.

Nobody knows how good, bad or average this England team is. We should know a lot more after the game, as knockout games reveal everything. There's no holding out now, no looking ahead, no protecting players and no hiding place. We will be under the hammer tonight and it will be fascinating to see how we get on. Will we cope? I really haven't got a clue.

As for Uruguay;
1950 Scotland and Turkey withdrew so they only had to beat Bolivia as you say, but they then had a second group which Uruguay topped above Brazil, Sweden and Spain so it was hardly a walkover..
Not only twice winners, but four times semi finalists (as recently as 2010), they are comfortably South Americas third most successful country despite a population less than the Republic of Ireland.

Like the premier league there is an elite group in international football that have and will continue to dominate.
Since 1966 only 8 teams have made it to the world cup final. 2 of those did not qualify this time, 3 others have already fallen and only one of the 3 remaining are in our side of the draw. Us.
Hence the reason for optimism and the reason we have a chance.

Well-beaten. Been lucky. The future is not bright for me with this group....hugely over-rated. Muscles and pace are not football.

Southgate got it all wrong tonight for me.

There wasn;t much between the two sides. A bit of midfield quality and our inability to take control when we were dominant early on. Croatia did deserve it.. just.

Yes Croatia were the better team, but not way better. These lads are still young. Still time to mature and improve their overall game. Not scoring many from open play is a slight concern but our goals from set pieces are on the button. Overall, I think our future IS bright. I think we've reason to be optimistic for the future.

Called Swiss and Japan to get out of the groups as trades...both made money. Said England, Belgium and Argentina would NOT win it. Think my posts have been pretty accurate. England....not good enough. 1 hour without a shot on target again.

I shall begin with the most relevant reasons. 1. Not enough world-class players. England cannot win it in the same way that Libya cannot win it...the players are not good enough. How many of the current squad play at PSG, Barca, Real Madrid or Juventus? Who is world-class? Kane or Sterling on an exceptional day? You need 4 or 5 top,top players at the very least. 2. Mental strength and attitude. The least passionate and most self-absorbed squad. Cossetted from youth..its about the money, headphones and roasting women. They always come home saying it was too long or they are retiring or they were bored in the hotel. Chicarito came off blubbing yesterday simply because they had won the opening match...what would he have done had they qualified! 3. Ranking and form. Ranked below the Swiss, Poland, Chile, Peru and Denmark....for good reason. These teams are at least England's equal. Weight of money with British bookmakers always shortens them. They are 15/1 and i would not back them at treble that with Southgate's money. In just over two years they have beaten one decent team (Holland), who were in free-fall. 4. Southgate. I do not rate him. Been groomed for the job by the FA since he captained England. A "Yes" man. They always speak of him as calm, intelligent, considered. I have never heard a profound or erudite word from him...even when i was in his company privately...in fact i think he is none too sharp. His management record is not exactly glowing either. Simply not the man for the job. England to beat Belgium in the final 'Pretty accurate' you reckon? Point 3 mentions 5 teams you reckoned were ranked above us "for good reason" but 1 didn't even qualify, 2 failed to get out of the group stage and the other 2 were dumped out in the round of 16. Simple fact Oti is, that you love to denigrate England and anything English it appears. You love to put England's (and Town's too for that matter) achievements down to luck. I do wonder if Poland had done what England did in this World Cup - Your reasoning for it would be anything but luck. I guess your assessment of your posts on here are about as accurate as the initial posts themselves 😉

I was wondering when our resident fucking genius would turn back up...
It's good odds to predict your team might not win in a race with 32 starters...
As ever the 'old sage' is back again...

The true sign of an idiot is when they are completely wrong and can't acknowledge or accept it.
We were a lick of paint away from a World Cup final, if Kane scores his easy first half chance then its game over.
We now have an identity and a young team to be proud of that is only going to improve. Anyone who can't see that is a simpleton.

The reason we didn't win last night was we were beaten by a side that were pretty much better in every department, and they simply wanted it more.
No shame in goin out at the semi final stage. Let's hope the FA now build on what the England team actually achieved otherwise they will have missed an opportunity to produce a team of tournament winners.
