I personally think relegation was probably the accepted outcome for the start of the season, so we haven't slept-walked at all, it was always on the cards and always planned for. Spunking tonnes of cash on players that aren't good enough to keep us up would have been downright crazy. The season starts in August 2019 for me. Like we did in Summer? Tax Avoidance??

I appreciate that the Chairman communicates with the fans, I'm sure we all do. However, if you're going to issue a rallying call and raise hopes then it has to be backed up with actions. The club would have been better saying 'we are down, we'll be lowering the wage bill until June. We have probably done that, given VLP, Sobhi and Collin are currently shipped out. I'm pretty sure that Puncheon will be close if not under the combined wages we are saving from those 3. The club need a few lessons in expectation management if they are gonna keep making statements that turn out to be bereft of substance. The Chairman, according to unofficial sources, may well be in bad shape. Leave him out of this. His troops need to step up to the game, so far they are weak cowards, unlike our Chairman. Read it again - I appreciate the chairman's communication (in response to an earlier poster saying he shouldn't have bothered) but think the club should have said a different message. Last sentence, 'The club need a few lessons...' I left him well out of my criticism. So wind your neck in

3 wingers out on loan. 1 aging central midfielder in. A squad with 6 attacking players for 4 positions. No movement. No creativity. Can't pass. Can't shoot. We haven't sleepwalked into relegation, we've thrown ourselves into a coma. Completely agree Stupid statement Nothing to back it up - we signed Andy Hughes’ mate, that’s all... who looks like he should be in a retirement home The Board completely screwed things up in the summer £5m net investment on the worst attack in premier league Unbelievably naive / out of their depth / cautious take your pick Blame the 3 directors of football / sporting directors who have left in quick succession (all 3 to blame... or wider issues?) The Board screwed this up big time in the summer ... make this stupid statement ... and deliver FA Wagner worked miracles to get us up, keep us up, ... worked miracles to get 11 points A complete lack of investment to improve the team Waken up! I dont disagree with your general point, but i've seen you mention this "5m net" multiple times now... what on earth do you mean by it? Because kongolo (and lossl, flo) was on loan last season he's not included in our spend even though we spent nearly 20m on him? we still had to pay the money. I've not looked but id imagine we are higher than 17th in transfer fees spent over the last 2 seasons? my take is we missed out on our proper targets last summer so took a few punts, which havent worked. think there would have been more investment were our proper targets got over the line

Got to be the worst ever...Even worse than getting relegated to lg 2 ...at least we scored goals bsck then .. You're being silly now. I've seen plenty worse than this season. We lack confidence but it'll return at some point. We are competing against better players from clubs backed by countries and we haven't had a lot of luck this season. Having said that we've rarely looked like scoring. Frustrating yes. But I'm phlegmatic about it...

It’s just annoying, isn’t it. We got up against all odds and made major investments in the first year to stay up. Then we remembered that we always need to find a way to bugger things up! Kongolo aside, the recruitment in the summer was appalling. If we were keeping our spending tight then we probably shouldn’t even have blown over half our budget on CB when we couldn’t score for toffee.
It all feels a bit like ‘typical Town’. Invest all our cash on floodlights that blow down! The squad is way below the required standard, recruitments are alluded to and never materialise, the best manager we’ve had for 40 years realises it’s an impossible job given the players and funds he has and buggers off and the descent begins.
It’ll still be as much fun wherever we end up but the feeling of having everything in place to kick on...and arsing it up so comprehensively, will linger for many, many years.

Won’t blame Deano. When he wrote that he probably didn’t think we’d get so far adrift.
I find it hard to give a positive spin on tonight - what worried me most of all was the lack of effort and tempo from some players. It didn’t look like they were trying to impress their new boss.
The playing squad looks in a real mess, I’m not sure who I would keep. Mooy depressingly will likely leave.
I’d like to see as many players as possible kept from our promotion season.
Unfortunately I think we’ll be left with a lot of deadwood we can’t move on.
Right now with the club in a downward spiral you’ve got to fear for us in the championship - it could be a struggle. We kid ourselves these players will come good down there, but I’m not sure many have got the fight or the confidence to adapt to that level of football.
Hope we see some shoots of recovery before the season is out. A couple of decent signings in the next 48 hrs could help brighten the place up a bit and restore a bit of hope for next year.

Why would they come back to haunt him, he clearly said it to try and lift the squad, manager and fans to try and show a bit of fight. He would have been as desperate as anyone else to see an upturn in results even if it ended in relegation. If he genuinely thought it might spur us on, then you cant really use it against him.

Its a tad unfair to level abuse at Bacuna, he wasn't bought to play this regularly, he was bought for the future. He's not ready and it shows, but you'd do well to find any 21 year olds costing £2m who's ready for this league, especially in such a poor side.
Remember what Mooy was up to at 21...

I think you might be surprised what a full pre-season does for the ones retained. Don't disagree with the confidence thing spiralling etc. as it's easy to argue that same (but opposite) point when viewed as momentum after a promotion. However, we're probably fortunate in that there's only a handful of players left who experienced the highs of Wembley, so don't think there are that many who've experienced anything more than a struggle to stay afloat...

Wish him well from whatever ails him .The board should have been well prepared to manage without him .Sadly they haven't .

The problem isn’t now (daft statement aside)
The problem was in July
It wasn’t even then it was a complete failure to replace Moss between October 17 and May 18 - a complete shambles
Failed to prepare for the transfer window and failed miserably in it
And sorry the Board (Hoyle included) has to take the blame for not making an appointment - and (at least) a large proportion of the blame for lack of investment to improve the team in the summer.

Clubs who operate big squads have the luxury of buying and developing players for the future. Not saying we shouldn't be doing but that's all we seem to do, as I said on another thread the other day, it's always 'jam tomorrow' at Town.

How many games had Diakhaby started before he joined us. 13 A fundamental lack of investment to push on or improve I believe the intention for last summer was - secure the players we have (dont sell our performers and secure the loans) - supplement the squad with a few punts who could come good like bacuna and sobhi (much like the sabiri, payne, dempsey deals) - blow the rest on 2 players to improve the first 11 (~£30m) (who could in theory transform the side) first 2 were the easy part. we struggled with the last part in signing our key targets and didnt recover. we missed out on who we wanted and the clock was ticking, so panic bought (absolutely not true that mbenza was our key target all summer). Id hazard part of the reason we didnt spend more is we knew we were panic buying so went for cheaper, less rigorously scouted players the plan was probably to regroup for january with new targets. i still think hoyle had every intention of spending a few quid this january when he made his statement, but a combination of lost games and wagners exit changed our plans. I was told before wagner went we were after 2 players, sounds from the club that hasnt changed but i'm certain the targets will have. we will now likely bring in any 2 looking towards the championship Also I believe pritchard came out of this years budget but i could be wrong

But we've had 3 central mids ahead of him all get injured meaning he's had to. We can sign players for the future, just like we did with Billing. The issue has been we didn't sign enough players for now, not that we're signing some for the future.
