Golcar used to have a couple of good fish oyles, Cliffe Ash and the Junc. The former is long gone and when I last visited the latter, they were awful. Had some from the one on the end of Sycamore next to the Indian, and they were a bit better but still nothing to write home about. I wonder if there's a decent chip shop left in the Colne Valley? Sad times. Cliffe Ash was always good, better than junction, though junction was ok a long time ago (20 years ish) don’t know what it’s like now. In Colne Valley area the chippy in Linthwaite, just past Cowlersley on Manchester Rd is supposed to be decent, never been myself. Kirkheaton for me, brilliant chippy and run by a big Town fan.

In my admittedly limited experience, the best I've found local (Dalton) to me is Mr. Chips corner of Grand Cross Road and Long Lane.
The worst by far, Terry's Broad Lane.

Never ceases to amaze me that this thread actually gets going and proper discussion about the best chippys.
Every. time.
You'd think we had done it. Is it new members or our tastes have changed?

Fryer tucks at hipperholme. One portion of chips will feed a average Catholic family.
Decent fish too.
One at bailiff bridge is decent but hit and miss when open, and more expensive.

Marsh area we have three chipys within 1/4 mile of each other - my favourite is the Tasty Bite further down from the Co-op going towards Paddock near the mini -roundabout with Luck Lane. It frys in beef drip so traditionalist will prefer them to the other two chippys who use veg oil.

Had a poor experience at The Kingfisher on Denby Dale Road recently. Tiny fish and the chips weren't great. Quite pricey too.

Used the one at the end of Smiths Avenue and lately the one straight opposite the CoOp as it generally seems to be open and I can never keep track of chippies opening days/hours.

Lindley fish bar next to Black Bull pub I remember when that one was called Whittle's, back in the 80s. Been through a few owners since then. I grew up on Thorncliffe Street so that was my local chippy. Further afield there was one next to The Globe pub opposite the hospital, or The Bungalow on New Hey Road, which I think is still going.

Made me laugh that. Food and DATM are historically a thing of beauty. Main board, off topic, Buxton lounge, it’s all there. Anyway, me mam used to send me up to Greenside chippie in Mirfield, to get the battered fish from the day before that hadn’t sold. 10 pence a fish .... bargain. Got back, she whacked it under the grill, in a butty.... life back then was blissful. UTT

The Bungalow, back in the 60/70s was a wood shack owned by an Italian family (the Capone's) until it burned down. The son (Piero, a dentist) who I employed proudly told me The Bungalow is the result of the insurance payout, no questions asked if get my drift!

Lindley fish bar next to Black Bull pub I used to be able to see that place from my kitchen window about 20 years ago. Was decent back then but had proper random opening hours even for a chippy. Could always tell when it was open though as they’d be queuing out of the door.

Best pies and sandwiches around they were. We used to go down from work every morning.Pork sarny on drip with stuffing and crackling plus a couple of pork pies almost every day for me. Still waiting for the impending heart attack..

A friend of mine's Dad owned that between early to mid 80s. Friday nights in The Grove. Walked up after last orders the place was packed (if he was in a good mood or had been busy sometimes got them free). I gather it is very difficult to find a chip shop open on a Friday or Saturday night now. Chaplin's bar in Monte Castillo here do fish and chips as good as anywhere.
