nshackle yes that sounds the place, everything cooked to order so a bit of a wait but it brings out more flavour. Sorry to piss on your chips lads but you're both talking about different places. Cheers, must have been Little Fat Fryer, never really look at the names of these places. They were very good fish n chips though parking is limited.

Is that the tiny shack on the left coming from lepton toward h'field? If so I tried them for first time this season and they were excellent. I used to occasionally call at the tiny place opposite working men's club in Flockton. Now the club's gone and so has the chippie. Bloody progress... Chippy has long gone but the club is operating from the old post office on a temporary basis between the new housing estate and the car park being built for the new club when it eventually gets built Thanks for the updates, looking at the signs coming through Flockton from J28 there seems a strong movement toward them building a bypass, which I can understand, so there may come a time if I live long enough that I'll miss these sites out completely. I don't come that way as often as I used to anyway, sometimes go up to J40 and over to Cleck to visit family first before the match. That developement where the club was just seemed to fly up, houses up in next to no time.

Lindley fish bar next to Black Bull pub I used to be able to see that place from my kitchen window about 20 years ago. Was decent back then but had proper random opening hours even for a chippy. Could always tell when it was open though as they’d be queuing out of the door. They’re queuing out of the door because it’s the most frustratingly inefficient fish and chip shop the world has ever seen 😡😡🤬 I don’t mind, and I expect, at the back end of opening hours if there’s only a trickle of customers, to have to give me order on the way in so they don’t waste fish etc. BUT...they actually expect every single person, even if that’s 15 minutes after they’ve opened and there’s a queue of ten people to shout out how many fish, sausages whatever they want. And they expect people to KNOW to do this. They don’t ask you on your way in, and actually the person on frying duty seems to make a point of looking down into the friers and deliberately ignoring anyone new coming in!! So...someone “new” comes in, they queue behind 8 people or whatever, more people are coming in behind but asking for odd stuff like “specials” or various pies to be put in, so the “new” person assumes they don’t need to shout out, as they’re simply getting fish and chips, and it’s a fish and chip shop, and they can see fish. They eventually get to the front,..are asked what they want, can SEE some fish (cos someone behind them asked for two fish)...and are then sent to go and stand in the corner as they’ve let their self down as well as the whole human race, “you should have asked for fish when you came in”.... PUT A FRICKING SIGN UP. Anyway, Tony’s Chippy is the best chippy of all, Shame it doesn’t exist any longer. There was no need to shout out orders for fish or sausages in Tony’s.

In my admittedly limited experience, the best I've found local (Dalton) to me is Mr. Chips corner of Grand Cross Road and Long Lane. The worst by far, Terry's Broad Lane. A friend of mine's Dad owned that between early to mid 80s. Friday nights in The Grove. Walked up after last orders the place was packed (if he was in a good mood or had been busy sometimes got them free). I gather it is very difficult to find a chip shop open on a Friday or Saturday night now. Chaplin's bar in Monte Castillo here do fish and chips as good as anywhere. I wonder if the relaxing of licensing laws contributed. Always used to find a chippy open after being turfed out at 1030 or 11pm or whatever...there was a captive market of folk wanting chips in a pretty tight half hour period. Then suddenly pubs are open to midnight, or 1am or whatever, and I guess Doris has better things to do with her time than serve chips to a trickle of folk until the early hours.

I will call in and have a look for sure

Regulary called for them post pub back in the early 80s/late 70s. I don't think I know one that's open after say 10pm now apart from those that do pizzas and curries, establishments to be avoided at all costs..
They were comparatively far cheaper back then though. A bag of chips was hardly anything, even as a kid I could afford one just about whenever, if not they would give you a bag of bits for nothing.. My dad was always telling me that the price went up astronomically due to a potato shortage or something in the 70s. When the shortage was over they never reduced the price. It was something that rankled him to the grave.

It was the heat in 76 that affected potatoes.

It was the heat in 76 that affected potatoes. I assumed that's what he was on about. 76 was particularly bad because the drought actually began in 75, another hot dry summer. I remember those years mainly for watching David Steel batting for England, and West Indian fans packing out test grounds. Where are they now?

I think there was a mini potato crisis last year too that sent price of chips up...the late cold/snowy weather meant planting was delayed, and then a long dry summer resulted in slow growth.
I know this as I went to Lindley fish & chips and had to hear a long convoluted story about it whilst waiting for a fish to be cooked and wondering why they always have about 10 fish cakes ready to go even though nobody orders them....(and whatever happened to chats)?

Barracuda at Ossett is decent, as is Scarborough at Thornhill.
Two chippies in Batley town centre but both are mediocre. Their one saving grace is they're always open, and Howies has a bottle of Hendersons on the counter.

It's that time of year to update on the best fish & chips, curries, Chinese being served up in the Huddersfield area.. Chippy:Lindley fish bar Compo's (on occasion bit of a trek out). Blakeley's Brighouse CurryImrans Golcar Bombay Tandoori Milnsbrige (cheap sometimes cheerful, get what you pay for). Grameen Lounge in Birchencliffe, unreal curries, more of a restaurant but you can take out. ChineseOnly ever go to the one and its Mayflower in Paddock i think it classes as, It's only ever open 2 days a week but its always top notch.

And another thing...
“One fish...and put a sausage in”.
“Jumbo?” /pointing at a sausage that belongs. To. Someone. Else. 😡😡😡😡
“What do the non jumbo sausages look like?”
“We only do jumbo”.
WELL DON’T ASK ME TO MAKE A SIZE-BASED CLARIFICATION STATEMENT.....
I suppose on he bright side we don’t have to make the haddock or cod choice that you were asked in the 70s/80s....pollocks to that.
