Kids TV was effective back in the day with 3 channels and no internet or playstations to distract folk.
One day (a Monday or a Thursday) kids throughout the country went home...and then Joey Deacon was on Blue Peter...the next day (a Tuesday or a Friday) was impression central and a new put down catchphrase was unveiled and used frequently for days weeks months and years...

Why dont DATM shut down for Season end break from June until August to reduce sillyness ? Sillyness would be reduced by 90% if you shut down until August.

Used to like the show with a rather dishy Gillian Tailforth in too, can't remember the name without googling though..

Why dont DATM shut down for Season end break from June until August to reduce sillyness ? It does, Nick, didn't you get the memo? It closes tomorrow at 9am, then re-opens on the first of August. So there's no point in you logging on until then. Happy to help!

Dogtanian smashes everything, there is nothing better. Used to wind up an English Lit tutor summat rotten by always calling Dumas's characters by their canine alter-egos... not in assignments of course!

Why dont you! Bloody hell remember that, always on in six week holidays, as were that aussie programme (round the twist?,). Great days. Why Don't You was so weird... different hosts every year, they all looked about university age. They all lived in a house next to a canal and did bargain-basement Blue Peter-style craft activities. The theme tune suggested that we turn the TV off and do something else. Round the Twist was a laugh. One of the cast was also in Pugwall I think... I used to "turn off the TV and do something less boring instead". Usually just as 'Why don't you' was about to start.

Golcar used to have a couple of good fish oyles, Cliffe Ash and the Junc. The former is long gone and when I last visited the latter, they were awful. Had some from the one on the end of Sycamore next to the Indian, and they were a bit better but still nothing to write home about. I wonder if there's a decent chip shop left in the Colne Valley? Sad times. We used to have a decent chippy on Cowlersley Lane, but it's been a Chinese for a good few years now. Struggled to find a decent/consistent one for years, but started going to the one on Manchester Road at Linthwaite where the Co-op used to be. You can takeaway or eat in and they've been very good up to now. Run by a Scouse bloke. Tbe one on the main street at Slaithwaite opposite the canal is good too. Also run by Scousers. I've often wondered if the lad running the shop at Linthwaite is related. When I was a kid we always went to Whittles at Lindley. Remember queuing out onto the pavement. Later on my dad started going to The Bungalow, but I never rated it as highly. Also used to go to the one on the corner of Reed Street at Marsh on the way home from Scouts on a Friday night. Wasn't bad in the mid to late 80s. No idea what it's like now. The best chippy I've been to recently was one at Highroadwell in Halifax. It was called Kemp's, and I used to go on my Friday dinner breaks. Run by a Londoner called Bob, who cooked the best fish I've had. Really big portions too. Been there for years apparently, but sadly he's packed up due to ill health. A sad loss. Go to one called Brackenbed Fisheries on Pellon Lane now - decent but nowhere near as good as Bob's fish.

When I was a kid and my gran lived up Crosland Moor, she used to send me down Walpole on my bike for 4 times and a fish every Friday lunch during the school holidays. Back then it wasn't quite the war zone that it seems to be now, but it was still pretty rough. Not an errand I looked forward to. Cracking fish and chips though.

Whittles was superb in the 80's Popped to the place that stands there now when calling at my Mum's and it is not in the same league Chippy Booths is alright though at Lepton
