I've not watched a great deal of the tournament.....based on what I have seen, the quality of passing has been pretty poor. Reasonable summary of most games?

I've not watched a great deal of the tournament.....based on what I have seen, the quality of passing has been pretty poor. Reasonable summary of most games? If you've only watched a few games then your sample data might be a little flawed. The problem is that people are comparing it to the men's game and their world cup tournament that's been running for nigh on 90yrs and with the vast majority of games in living memory being played by blokes who are playing in a professional arena. So the women's game will have some catching up to do with regards to having 20-30 nations across the globe that can go head to head for a WC tournament. Not sure what pro leagues the US women play in, but it's been the case for a while that they've been a notch above most other nations. I imagine if you compared this tournament to the last WC, the standards have improved dramatically. Technically there are some very good sides out there, but occasionally there's a lack of composure that you won't see as often in the mens game. That's not a criticism, that's pointing back to the maturity of the game, the availability of the sport at grass roots, funding etc. etc. compared to what young lads have had available for decades. Physically & athletically these are now much better games to watch. They cross the ball well, corners have been quite useful to some teams, tackling can be a no holds barred thing. It's a far cry from what I can remember it being like, but when you consider the disparity it's a pretty good standard to watch at international level. The best way I can sum this up, is that it's like RU for me. I can watch the international games, 6 nations etc. no bother, but have rarely had an interest in spending 80 mins watching a club game. I do think this tournament will allow it to kick on a fair bit, but don't fool yourself into thinking women's football will ever be on a par & part of that is not just the grass roots disparity, FIFA & the male dominated regional organisations won't allow it to have an equal platform. Football is run by dinosaurs & accountants...

I've not watched a great deal of the tournament.....based on what I have seen, the quality of passing has been pretty poor. Reasonable summary of most games? It's all or nothing. One minute they're playing nice one touch football in perfect triangles and the next minute they all look like they've got their boots on the wrong feet. It's usually panic stations anytime a ball gets knocked in to the box and they struggle to clear it far enough to end the danger so they end up penned in the box until the opposition either score, keeper saves it or ends up behind for a goal kick

heading seems to be light years behind the blokes..when under pressure in and around your own box the lumping together and ball watching is akin to an U10s game.
I am all for a passing game but England were in a semi final of the world cup and im afraid all it required was get it forward quick, run with it at the opponents goal at speed, or cross the ball into the box as often as you possibly can, the passing game for our ladies is still not honed or quick enough to outdo a bunch of Americans who pushed up and chased everything. We often took so long to get the ball up the pitch a lot of our 'own' players were miles out of position for the inevitable breakdown and quick counterattack.
A great many goals in this tournament have been scored with negligible numbers of attacking players in the box..this may well change but last night was probably not the game for 'moving forward, keeping possession, as a unit'... get it forward chase it, get it in the box and keep well enough back for the breakdown.

Passing has been mostly far better than in the men’s game, but when it it isn’t perfect it seems to be incredibly bad for some reason! Some of the moves playing it out of defence are the kind of thing Stankovic and Zanka would dream about being able to knock together.

i thought England had their poorest game last night, unfortunately in a semi final. The central defenders had 'mares, passing was dire, headers poor and marking for the USA goals non existant. central midfield was weak too with so many overhit passes. England lost through their own failings on the night and they'll be gutted they let this one go. Previously they have looked accomplished and efficient...but gifting 2 headed goals, missing a penalty and then the sending off...add to the fact they 'lost it' late on with some clumsy tackles and a succession of free kicks which enabled the USA to run down those 7 minutes of added time without England getting in their half...
The US area decent team, fast, hard and an edge to their game...but they were beatable last night...shame really..

And what a case of `much ado about nowt` regarding the American tea sipping celebration after they`d scored, shame we lost but i thought that was quite funny tbh. Some have been moaning saying its unsporting etc etc, the mens game has been littered with all manner of celebrations over the years, some funny and some not so, dont know why some people got in a lather about last nights celebration, just a funny jibe at the English.

Yup - bet Peter Mellor was thinking what's all the fuss about... (just checked wiki to check he's still about - interestingly, went to coach in the US after he finished playing)

Can I just say a massive thanks to those who have had to manfully struggle through the last few weeks. It must've been very difficult having to watch these games against your will and then comment endlessly about them. Thanks for you support 👍

The USA will blow either of these 2 teams away. Seems like the best games have been the US v France & the US v England.

Didn;t have to be a red unless it was seen as a deliberate foul, which it certainly wasn't. She wasn't even trying to make contact with her. It was a pen but Ive no idea why the US player was booked. Its like theres now some unwritten rule that any foul in the area is a yellow card offence. Why? Its just a foul.. give a free kick ( pen ). Our disallowed goal was offside, but once again VAR shows it will remove the joy of celebrating a goal by altering a decision that certainly wasn;t a clear and obvious mistake. Yes the correct decision, but the game dies a bit every time they do it IMO The red card is for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. She made no genuine attempt to play the ball. Meaning to or not isn't part of the equation. It's either a penalty and a red or no penalty. It cannot be a penalty and yellow card. That is a referee not applying the laws correctly. It's the same as when a defender runs across an attacker outside the box and gets sent off for accidently tripping them when through on goal. Harsh, yes, but the law. pretty sure they changed that rule ( because it was bonkers and just ruined countless games with silly red cards ). Now the foul has to be deliberate to get a red i believe, not just a case of stopping a clear goal chance.

As I said above the law is that if the defender attempts to play the ball in the box it's a yellow. Otherwise it's a red.

Imagine how disappointed I was, when seeing the headline on the BBC sport website...
"I'm taking up coaching - and I'll lead England to victory in the next World Cup"
that I opened up the story and not one bloody mention of Oti...

Careful what you're promoting lads, those photos were almost certainly illegally hacked. "It is extremely sad and unfortunate that the rights of so many women were violated by the unauthorized release of private photographs. "This act goes beyond the bounds of human decency and, as such, I stand united with all the women affected and am exploring every option to protect my privacy."
