Seems it was the last day of 1960. I do recall collecting them and the last date was 59 I think.

Lucky Bags.....6d. A weekly treat from the sweet shop right next to St. Peter’s school in Birstall. Football special Birstall Smithies to Leeds Road return 2s, entrance 2s, programme 6d. Marvellous. Farthings stopped being used in 1961 so I don’t remember actually using them, knew what they were though. If the old currency was reinstated today I wouldn’t have the slightest problem using it again. Coat pockets would need reinforcing though. Crikey i went to St Peter's left in 79, but dont remember a sweet shop. Im guessing it was one of the terraced cottages across the road just up from the white bear pub? The best sweet shop in Birstall was "Goodies" Before that it was Blakelys a right small shop opposite the market place but they didnt like weighing 2oz of spice out there lol.

Demonetised in late 1960.

I’m talking about the original St. P school down on Kirkgate. The sweet shop was at the junction of Leyland Road, Kirkgate and Church Street. You went to the new St. P, like my brother and sister did.

I have a few reasons why i wont be rushing to renew. I would like to know what division we will be in for a start. That wont be possible but at least id like to see us in a much safer position . I would also like to change seats as those around me never appreciated my foresight. indeed many words have been exchanged. I told them at the start of last season when we were playing well but losing and Wagner was playing with very few attckers that we would become demoralised and get relegated I told them Billing was crap as he wouldnt frame himself and get stuck in I told them Kongolo didnt look interested when he came back from injury last season and that he didnt look the same player. Get behind them they cried then stopped coming to the games after relegation was confirmed. Interestingly no one argued over Flo though lol

If he is 18 shouldn't he be paying for his own? Age 15 my first take home pay was £33....£20 of it went straight to my step-mother in board. When did adult/kid spongers stop paying for their own stuff? Bit judgey. 🤷♂️☹️ £33 back then is probably equivalent of over a hundred quid now...she was leaving you with over £50 in year 2020 equivalent spends, assumedly weekly?? I suspect if you watched Town back then it was like all of us, paying couple of quid cash on the door home or away, MUCH more accessible than shelling out for a season ticket. Securing a job in 2020 as a 15 or 18 year old is not quite so straightforward as asking a mates dad or queueing up at a factory gate as it was for us, alongside the likely pressures of full time education. Give them a break... she’s not buying his 18 year old a season ticket because the 18 year old can afford it...it’s because he/she CANT afford it. Thanks for the backing (although I've corrected a slight error for you ) For Oti's benefit - my (soon to be) 18 year old is still at school and is planning to go to university in the autumn, and so doesn't have £250 spare for his ticket. Between A Levels, watching Town and playing rugby he just doesn't have the time for a part time job. If he went to the games with friends of his own age then I might expect him to buy his own ticket but he comes with me so it would be a bit mean for me to not get it for him. Once he's working he will be expected to pay his own way.

How did people understand this money system!?!? Tourists must have just opened their hands and say 'take what you want' How does 6 pence equal 2.5p. It will always be a mystery to me. It was our monetary system, i grew up with it. Simple really, 960 farthings to the pound, what could be easier? I think age may be clouding your memory somewhat, surely as a youth you dealt in groats ?
