I think PH was quite transparent about the finances on the "TAKES THAT CHANCE" podcast last year, it's not really rocket science. As DH said, being a PL club is bloody expensive and the consequence of achieving promotion was not to become rich, it was to cope with the financial demands and have an exit strategy that leaves a club in one piece. Two key issues with that for Town - firstly the footballing assets we purchased for large fees have nearly all failed, leaving us with expensive wages and low resale values. Secondly, our new owner's business interests have taken a hit, limiting his own ability to inject short term funds to cover transfer expenditure. It's pretty clear to me that we are clearing the decks to make room for more affordable signings. It's horrid because we're an absolute mess squadwise, but lets face it, the first few games are hard anyway and by the end of the transfer window we will likely have signed 4 more players. So whilst it's messy at the moment, and rightly major questions can be asked - I think the finances thing is old news because the costs of being a PL club are massive, and COVID is smashing everyones finances to pieces - just wait to see Man United's accounts when they get released soon. Deano certainly got his exist strategy alright, don’t begrudge him the brass as it’s his but the dross served up on the pitch and some of the decision or lack of is poor to say the least over the last couple of years. It feels like we are in free fall at times.

I take it Grant isn't training with us then? He's been wrapped in cotton wool.

The problem is if we dont sell Grant this window what will he do? Will he refuse to play ( like Butterfield did) or not put the required effort in, if selected. Either way we stand to lose out financially as clubs will no longer be interested in the next transfer window or offer much less than is currently on offer.

We should give WBA a deadline. Tell the brummie barstewards that they sign Grant by said date or fuck off. They've got literally millions of pounds to play with, whereas we could well be risking our Championship status waiting and waiting for them to wrap this up.

Sounds like he is going, it's just about agreeing the arrangement of how and when we receive payment. If he is stuck here at the end of the window then he will need to be a big boy about it and get on and learn to put in a transfer fee release clause into his future contracts.

Who'd have thought this would be possible just two years ago.

We fucked about with Kongolo potentially being sold last summer. That went well for us. Hope lessons have been learned from that. Shirt sponsor negotiations obviously went well also, I wonder how many back office salaries that would pay? Any other championship teams without a sponsor? Or any in the whole pyramid for that matter? Not having a front of shirt display last season has come back to bite us. A few targets had the same retort ie "You played on the logo free gimmick, why would we want to be associated with you this time?"

West Brom when they got relegated had massive money earners and big egos and were so so bad.
Yet they have managed to recover and got back up within 2 years.
We look like the total opposite right now, struggled last year and this season we will be okay but not banging on the door of promotion.
I really hope this new process works out. Nothing wrong in what we are trying to do if the end result is positive.

Bilic update today: Reading between the lines it would appear he still wants Grant and not one of the other strikers they've been linked with, but needs to get rid of Zohore first...
------
With fans waiting anxiously, hoping that the club’s efforts in the window bear fruit, Bilic has reasoned that he’d prefer to sit tight and the club continue to focus those efforts on their primary target, rather than merely signing a striker who wouldn’t fit the bill quite as effectively.
“We don’t need numbers - we have numbers,” Bilic said. “If one comes then probably one will have to go, ideally. We don’t need numbers.
“Unless we can get someone that I or we think gives us something we don’t have, then what’s the point?
“I would rather wait, I would rather wait to get the proper one - the one that we want, than get one just for the sake of doing it. With Covid the fact is, okay we hoped, we are still trying to make the best out of the transfer window.
“We were in a difficult situation - not just because of Covid - but we were in a difficult situation where we had to spend our funds to keep the players we had last season on loan.

I'm not aware that players are massively bothered by shirt sponsorship but would be interested to know: a) Who the players are. b) Where you heard it.

This was always going to happen, you can't claim sponsors are ruining football shirts one year then go out with the begging cap the next.

Clearly you miss-read the post Yeah I've clearly misinterpreted what was meant by 'targets'. Massive apologies to @sociallydistant - with the utter bilge that is often and currently posted on DATM, I have misunderstood what you meant by 'targets'. Coincidentally, I have contributed a nonsense post that I mistakenly thought I was challenging.

Would love to have Rhodes back tbh. Dont buy all this "can't play the lone striker role" stuff. Feed that guy and he will score goals.

Doubt we could afford Rhodes's wages. He's on mega bucks at Wednesday apparently and they want him off their wage bill.

Jordan Rhodes would pretty much be the opposite of what CC would be looking for in his striker. I think we can all sleep easy safe in the knowledge JR wont be coming back
