That Pompey game was eventful. They came in the back of the terrace and all hell let loose. Don’t remember anything about the match itself just buzzing as a 15 year old as I ran off, then ran back, then ran off again …. Strange days back then but a lot of laughs were had …. UTT I was 9 and I'm not too proud to admit I was fucking babbling misen. The away game later in the season was equally, if not more, scary. A tale I have told before:- On the way down we stopped at a service station and, as was common, went over the bridge to "say hello" to fans on the other side. On this day it was Southampton fans travelling north to, I don't remember where. When they realised we were playing Pompey, they didn't want to fight. "My enemy's enemy is my friend" so to speak. "You lot are in for a bad day" they told us. We figuratively shook hands and off we went, agreeing to meet on the way home to discuss how the day had been. Before, during, and after the game was the worst atmosphere I have ever encountered at a match, before or since, truly horrible, really scary. Maybe because of the trouble at the October home game, I don't know. Crombie clad skinhead psychopaths out for blood and we were dodging milk bottles and half charlies raining down onto us in the away end terrace etc etc. But we survived, just. "Thank fuck we lost, imagine how angry they would have been had we beaten them" was the general view when we got back into the van and a safe, police, escort out of the area. Travel back up, get to the service station, and we see the Saints fans on the bridge over the motorway. One of those bridges that had cafés and such on them, so we went up to have a catch up. Unfortunately, it was a different crew of Saints fans and they set about kicking seven bells of shite out of us until the travel club coach arrived on the scene. Lost a tooth that day.

Easily the most violent football match I ever experienced. Didn’t get hit or chased but heavily fined and suspended by Heywood Sports for skipping a game. By my brother! Went back 15/20 years later and drank in their pubs, talked to Pompey fans and walked around without a problem.

How many ‘half time score windows’ were there on the old Town scoreboard at Leeds Rd?

How many ‘half time score windows’ were there on the old Town scoreboard at Leeds Rd? Was it 8 which they used to put up 3 lots of scores - so 24 half time scores in total?

sorry, I'm thinking of teams playing in 4 divisions not just playing Town ....which is what I actually meant; should have specified that I didn't mean against Town.

Tell us who the ref was please, Stan. I really don't think it was Peter Willis. Perhaps Redfearn from Whitley Bay or Saunders from Newcastle. Very impressive knowledge, sir. It was Mr Ken A Redfern from Whitley Bay. I spelt his name wrong. Thanks for looking it up. I've lost count of the number of times that posters ask a question and then don't follow it up when people have taken the trouble to reply.

Id say its you... just an age thing. We were young so going to football was more fun. Plus you only tend to remember the good bits. All the crap , dull bits get lost from the memory banks over the years. I started watching town in 79 too ( after watching Leeds for a couple of years previously ) Was your first game the Pompey game in October like me? Think that was a lot of fans first game. Lost 3-1. Peter Willis reffed. Kicked off big time Two out of three right, Turbo. It's taken a while and Stan's diligence to prove it, but Willis didn't ref this one.

Could have sworn he did. He was like a pantomime villain every time he reffed us. Couldn’t believe it when he got the fa cup final in 85. How do you actually find this out. Been looking but can’t find anything

Had a reet day in the attic the other day. Found my dad's 60s programmes, my 70s & 80s programmes, my dad's Blues & Soul magazines - about 100+ of them and a £500+ bottle of single malt.

Surely with that title that book must have been written by an American?

Association Football - soccer - was invented by England long before America even existed 😉

Wonder when they decided to print the whole squad names and numbers rather than just guessing what the lineups would be? My dad took me to Norwich in 1996 and he spent all game trying to convince me that Keith O’Neill was actually Ade Akinbyi!
