Don’t agree with the vast amount of post match comments, I thought we competed well and tried to change our game to negate Barnsley. I think we would have lost playing our passing game anyway so it was the right tactic to get the ball up the pitch quicker.
Barnsley are well drilled and have a really energetic and relentless pressing system where they condense the areas where the ball is and force the opposition back on mass. Their defence were quickly on the half way line for much of the game.
It’s effective at this level but you need to match them physically and beat the press with incisive passing, and balls over the top that are accurate enough to beat their offside trap without the ball reaching there keeper, who also pushes really high.
We tried to do this and failed last night, but I don’t think we actually played that bad personally, we were never gonna create a lot of chances against them.

To be fair to the players, it must be very confusing constantly changing the way we play from game to game. I thought the whole point of having an identity is that we know how we will play & that the whole club, from U17s upwards, play like that so that when injuries inevitably come, players can slot into the team fairly seamlessly.
Within 2 games of Wagner joining, despite not winning, an identity was formed for all to see, in the first part of the season, you could see what CC was trying to do but for the last half of the season, we've been clueless about what to expect.

They had more players than us for almost the whole game. We gave them the ball back more than norwich.. They had less defenders most of the time than us but closed down quicker and harder and they regularly got more forward than us. Other than that the effort and the commitment was there. The lack of care of the ball was evident time after time, players not really wanting it, flicking it away as soon as they got it.. Lack of support for the ball and the player going to the ball was as bad as Rotherham and the overall lack of movement means we just were not working hard enough. Not sure its lack of care....I think tonight it was more an inability to have the quality to deal with a Barnsley player being in your face the millisecond after receiving it. I don't think we are disagreeing....I just get pissed off with the lazy chuck.away line that we don't care. We just aren't good enough, have enough quality and have a good enough plan....those are the challenges for next season in my view 50 years plus watching players and teams. We have players who can play, we have some experience in the team and there is pace dotted about. None of which works if there is a lack of care. Care to make the runs to support the ball, support the bloke going to the ball etc. We flick at the ball more than any team at town I have ever seen, its half hearted, its instead of doing the harder things. There are at least 4 players last night who refuse to head the bloody ball, they dont even make a decent challenge if its head height or over. The most annoying habit they have dropped into is doing a good thing, getting caught with the ball and then fouling or getting the opponent in a difficult position and simply fouling and giving them the easy way out. The way we are supposed to be playing depends on the opposition closing us down quickly, we are supposed to want that? Last night was mis control, over running, or just toe poking it somewhere else when closed down? The triangles went nowhere because nobody moves forward of the ball, it was a static triangle that eventually loses the ball. Later in the game the ability to control the simplest of balls went out of the window and the number if times Barnsley just stood still and were given the ball was embarrassing. It's not the result, Barnsley are doing well, they have a system and they work very hard to it, it's the way we lose.

Shut up you absolute bellend It was someone from the Barnsley media team who said that. It was a thick Barnsley accent. I very much doubt Phil says Tha instead of you It was "we" or "wi" lost... and Barnsley media team won't have access to the stadium microphone..... ffs. Neither does the Town chairman in the boardroom!

That's what worries me most about CC. When he came he literally said "play with one style" home and away. There are mitigating circumstances and yes the recruitment is crap and he doesn't have the players to play his style properly, but since the going got tough he just seems to grope around in the dark for a style that might suddenly get a result. It's Lee Clark-esque at times.

Little we've done since Xmas, but plenty of points and good performances pre-Xmas. We shouldn't forget that. The team and management certainly got something right before Christmas when I was pretty optimistic about the future. The Schindler and Koroma injuries although during winning games, did seem important at the time. We have also scored some really good goals this season. Looking at last night, perhaps we need to have a look at making Eiting permanent. I'd also like to keep Campbell and keep our options open on Sanogo for a short term contract. The rest out of contract players can all go for me... not because they might be worth keeping (Bacuna?), but because we need to free up finances. LOB may need to be replaced and that won't be cheap to get someone of that calibre. We have the makings of a decent team with 4/5 good signings and if coached well, we could reach mid table obscurity next season. Now that would be a change. Campbell and Sanogo are not the answer, both will be on a decent wage. Like you've said, add to that the likes of Pritchard, Bacuna, Schindler etc and you have off loaded a hell of a lot of money. Use that money to sign a proven goal scorer. We can't continue season after season struggling to score goals. Player wise, this has to be top of the agenda come the summer.
