I'm just nervous we'll sign a load more Danny wards...Doesn't fill me with confidence where this club is heading, holmes, Keogh, ward, Sarr, Sanogo, Pipa,.... What's Pipa done wrong? Granted his standards slipped but up to December he was generally very good.

I see Maynard has liked this post, no wonder they are delaying the announcement of the retained list if we are keeping those two 🙄 Makes sense to me, there is firm interest in the pair. 10 goals and 11 assists between them in the championship is a good return. Obviously there is more to it but the pea heart pair will no doubt be of interest to some clubs. Be just our luck for the interest to evaporate once the contracts are signed! Bacuna hasn’t got a choice has he with the option being in the club’s favour but Mbenza doesn’t have any ties surely? Is he not a free agent potentially?

Maynardb - I normally believe every word you write, but stating that someone is interested in Mbenza is stretching credulity a tad too far... I think if you look at all his best bits from this season onto a highlights reel, there'll be plenty of interest. Some genuine quality moments and his stats read well. I fkg hope so....... disinterested idle lump who performed early on to get interest and since then has done little. Narrowly behind diacalm as the worst £ for £ signing in my lifetime!

Granted his standards slipped but up to December he was generally very good. Agree with this. I’d take him out of the list above - he’s exactly the type of player we should be signing, and was imo an excellent deal Spanish u21, decent quality with lots of potential, some clear flaws which we can (hopefully!) develop He played an awful lot of games and clearly fell away as the season went on - But clearly talented More Pipas less of the rest!

I've a horrible feeling they will end up costing us by keeping them due to the loyalty bonus and/or have to cover wages

Only worry in triggering the extra year is that if can’t shift them we’re stuck with them for another year.

That has to be a joke. Get the feeling we might have signed the four Maynard said about. But have no idea who will be released. Other clubs are releasing their retained list already. So why can't we Surely people realise we know exactly who is going and who staying and have done for a while? It'll be announced in due course but don't let that get in the way of the club bashing. Nothings going to get in the way of that!

Probably a similar highlights reel we must have watched when we decided to fork out £11m for him or whatever silly amount it was! Bacuna will have a great highlights reel too. He plays like he's trying to fill a big long one with little snippets of brilliance. Problem being the lowlights reel where it goes totally wrong would be about 10 times longer. Bacuna Im not sure about but surely the only reason we'd offer Mbenza an new deal is because someones lined up to buy him and we have the chance to claw back a little bit of the money we blew on him.

When did assists even become a thing? Dont recall them when I was a kid.
Tap the ball 2 foot to the right and then your team mate hammers it in from 30 yards and you get an assist.
I don't really care what Mbenzas stats say. Other than a short spell early this season when he was 'ok', he's been fucking dreadful all the time he's been here.

For his first 2 years here beyond pitiful. The worst kind of player - some ability but zero heart, minimal application and as soon as you go behind he disappears quicker than lord lucan. Bye bye.... wont be missed.

I think there’s value in measuring assists but it would have to be done in such a complex way that would be a nightmare to do based on allocating a value to each individual situation. Completely agree that the current way is so basic and flawed that it’s a nothing stat. When something is this flawed then it does more damage than good to count it. Think of all the Barca players who’ve got ‘assist’ bonuses for slipping Messi the ball in the centre circle. Same with pass completion stats, which just make players take the easier ball and go nowhere.

Mbenza and to a lesser extent Bacuna are good examples to show what a shitty hand PH has been dealt.
The easy thing would be to let them walk away for nothing. But there is value in both of them and if they got their heads right they could both have good careers (Bacuna clearly with more potential).
Triggering extensions to get a fee for both is risky and bold and the right thing to do for the club, if it comes off!
Would hope that we have a big sell-on fee for Bacuna because if he knuckles down he could be a hell of a player and could go for big money.
But not an easy situation to deal with at all and I have sympathy for PH because it’s another mess he’s inherited that he’s got to sort out..

Honestly? You might sign Mbenza for free but if Town start demanding fees for him you could get the same standard or better for an out of contract player, then you would. Bacuna maybe we could get 500k for him but again we could end up pricing ourselves out of the market buy demanding too much for him. If someone offered 500k for him I'd rip their hands off.

They both have it in them to change a game. We might love the workers but it's players like this that can win games. It's so easy to fill your team with players who run themselves into the ground to ‘earn’ a win but never look like doing so. Hence games with 60% possession but zero shots. There will be a fair few aspirational (egotistical) managers who think they can take that potential and produce consistency.

We'll no doubt trigger a year long extension for both of them (on the current large wages, I presume?) then watch as they pick up serious injuries in pre-season training, rendering them unsellable. 😁🤦🏻♂️

The club will have had to weigh the cost, in wages, if they were to extend contracts to Mbenza and Bacuna, against the transfer fees they THINK they could get if they then sold them. In my opinion that risk is simply not worth it. Mbenza ranks amongst the worst ever signings and we all know what Bacuna does and doesn’t offer.
Best to just get rid of them both. Now.
As for Keogh, I suspect he wouldn’t have come from MK Dons (and supposedly for a fee) for the opportunity to just return to play in the Championship for four months, without the expectation of an extension if the club survived the drop. Hope I’m wrong.

We could go down the route of sell-on fees more than the size of transfer fees though, which may make them more attractive to potential suitors?

Mbenza we’ll be lucky to get decent money for but Bacuna is very talented and has the potential to be a big money player. Would hope we get a decent price and a good sell-on fee. It might blow up in our face but he deserves respect for trying to salvage the best from a bad situation.

Maybe we should give them more credit, they can sell sand to Arabs or snow to Eskimos !

Maybe there's a bit of skullduggery going on...like "let's tell HTAFC we're interested in Mbenze/bacuna...prepared to pay £x..but we'll wait and see if they become free agents first.." HTAFC extend contracts for both players... Potential buyer .." Ahah, fooled yah !...that's less money you have now to compete with us next season..suckers...." ?

I don't really have an issue with Keogh being retained, provided it's to take the squad place of Elphik and be fourth or fifth choice.

CC and others needs to assess every player at the club. Buggar me what assessing needs to be done now? Should have been sorted weeks ago. I thought that as well. That statement just confirms why we should continue to be concerned about the clubs ability to get things sorted. I thought some of the strange team selections might have been part of that assessment. Only hope now is that Carlos and the players are on holiday and we end up with a whirlwind of activity in two or so weeks time.

They will both be on around £1m a year in wages, so if they we offered an extension you have to believe there will be strong interest in them. I seem to recall Bacuna struggling with not being able to see his son and getting permission to go back home whilst the Cowleys were here. Does anyone know if this is still the situation. It may be a factor on his next destination
