Seriously. What do you call a black person thats always angry? They must have a name, right? It doesn’t need a name. Black men have been stereotyped as being angry for centuries. Also, see: uppity. The term gammon comes from Dickens in Nicholas Nickleby (though not the oldest reference) “The time had been, when this burst of enthusiasm would have been cheered to the very echo; but now, the deputation received it with chilling coldness. The general impression seemed to be, that as an explanation of Mr. Gregsbury’s political conduct, it did not enter quite enough into detail; and one gentleman in the rear did not scruple to remark aloud, that, for his purpose, it savoured rather too much of a 'gammon' tendency. My form dilates, my eye glistens, my breast heaves, my heart swells, my bosom burns, when I call to mind her greatness and her glory.” This explanation is a little disingenuous though - it has been popularised recently both before and after the referendum and is probably best illustrated by that montage of angry men from Question Time. It’s not racist, but it is lazy and divisive. Sadly, the lexicon of the right, weaponised by appalling people, such as “snowflake”, “virtue signalling”, “woke” etc has legitimised the counter thrust of “gammon”. Personally, if I read or hear someone using shite like “woke” I automatically think they are not worth listening to. Feel very much the same about gammon, even if that person will be more aligned to my views. Insult by shorthand reflects an unthinking person. Bang on, I think this is the first time I've ever read something sensible on DATM (including my own posts). Gammon, while relatively mild as an insult, is still childish and lazy. Particularly when there's usually so many other negative characteristics which could be pointed out instead. |

Said it before and I’ll say it again, the current state of the board is what happens when you insist on over mediation and ordering everything into threads.
This place would be so much more healthy if nonsense conversations were allowed to fall away to be replaced by topics that were pertinent.
It should be like a daily newspaper, where new stories feature every day and people are encouraged to post new threads without fear of being called ‘attention seekers’.
There would still be additions to existing topical stories keeping them up the page.. When people are no longer interested in a story it drops out through lack of popularity.
What we have is a newspaper where pretty much the same articles get bigger and bigger every day, with very little new news. You have to read all the same shit again to work out if there’s anything new and invariably there isn’t, there’s just loads of nonsense.
Attempting to order this site like some sort of conversation library was never going to work and so it’s proved.
It’s perpetuated petty squabbles and ruins good threads regularly with people going off at tangents too scared to start new threads for fear of criticism.
Its become difficult to navigate and the opposite of a way to catch up on the latest news.
