Can see both sides, Vallejo far better with the ball but Hogg better at the dirtier side of the game. My doubt about Hogg being so much better at the dirtier side of the game is that even when he plays opposition seem to coast through our midfield to defence and have done for a long time now.

The Vallejo v Hogg debate has been covered by earlier posts, but I would like to say a couple of things.
1) Hogg's passing isn't brilliant, but it's not as bad as some suggest. And he can play forward too - he was doing it in the early part of last season when we were playing some really good stuff at times.
2) This season, when I've seen Hogg play, he doesn't seem to be making himself available like he normally does. Perhaps this is because he's been playing very deep, but he hasn't been providing that link between defence and the more creative players anywhere near as much as he used to do. Often because he's not available to receive the ball.

After watching tonight, it struck me how much more effective our midfield looked without Hogg. Vallejo set the tempo really well and ensured that the midfield didn’t sit too deep which allowed us to press further up the pitch without the ridiculous gaps that we’ve seen between the front 3 and the rest of the team. Unfortunately, I don’t think Vallejo and Hogg work well together in the same line up, but if it was a choice between the the two then Vallejo wins it, hands down. What are everyone else’s thoughts? Hogg plays in the Championship and is the mainstay of the team week in week out Vallejo can not adapt to the pace of championship football it’s OK playing against Everton reserves who gave him time on the ball ( even the he took to long to play the obvious pass, took far to many touches, and slowed the game down. its Hogg and the Lad from Norwich for me looks far better than Vallejo in my opinion

He surprised me last season with some of his range of passing & not just in a "win the ball & give it to the nearest bloke in a blue & white striped shirt" kind of way but actually playing good forward passes. I'd still like to se Vallejo get more game time though. Partly because we're underusing his ability & also because we've become too reliant on Hogg. It's never good to be too reliant on one player. The performance vs Everton suggests that we don't need to be. That we can play well without him (and LoB, and JK...). Establishing him in the first team as a regular (or at least more frequent) starter should alleviate some of our over-reliance on Hogg.

People bigging up Hogg are surely talking about the Hogg of last season as imo he's been piss poor in the games so far this season.
Its Vallejo for me.

What let's him down more is his awareness in possession and his very deliberate technique. From this he often struggles if he isn't immediately facing where he wants to pass or is under pressure to control a ball and pick a pass quickly.

And you draw this conclusion from 4 games for Hogg and 2 for Vallejo? following our best league performance at the weekend in which Hogg played and Vallejo didn’t Can you rub your crystal ball a bit more and see if we are going to sign a CF and Midfield player before the end of August

It would be reasonable to conclude that one major priority for Carlos and his coaching team in the early part of the season is to try and establish some defensive solidity after last season's travails, and Hogg's deep positioning to protect the defence/or as part of the defensive role reflects this. Build a team from the back and all that.... In short, Hogg may have been hamstrung by his position.....

Im a big fan of Hogg and he has been a real clubman for Town and a decent player but, every footballer will reach a stage where another player will take your place and offer something different and better for the team. I dont have confidence in carlos to drop the likes of Hoggy to be honest but if he wants to push this team on and get us more competitive then he is going to have to grow a pair and make, what maybe some un popular decisions he can start by keeping Danny Ward away from a starting spot🙄

Vallejo played the ball into the box which Toffolo collected and squared to Colwill. And I suppose then that all 6 Sheffield United shots on target out of the 16 in total came in injury time by your reckoning. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58209743

Often because he's not available to receive the ball. On 1) yes I thought his passing was brilliant at times last year. Like you said it was mostly early in the season. I’ve been critical of Hogg since Mooy left because without Mooy he has had to step up in that department. He did early last year. The main problem is his lack of spacial awareness, he doesn’t know what’s around him to turn on the ball or let it run. It happened in the first minute of the game on the weekend. Ball went back into pressure and eventually got cleared up field by the keeper. Those are the situations where as a team, if we can get on the ball early we can establish a midfield dominance. Sadly that won’t happen until he changes. On 2) I totally agree. Our midfield(not limited to Hogg) have been hiding for far too long. Literally standing still behind opposition players with no movement doesn’t make you a midfielder. It’s been happening all too often and I’ve had enough of it, I can only imagine CC’s frustration.

Debate aside, I just love watching the guy. Has the ability to be a real Rolls Royce if we gave him consistent game time. Folk talking about his long passes, and rightly so, but it’s some of the little balls round corners and through gaps that start opportunities. Berge was talked about a lot after Sat, but Vallejo has quality (IMO) and Berge cost £25m. Absolute bargain. 100% agree. He's basically Aaron Mooy but even more of a luxury player, he seems to just find playing football very easy, its like watching a Bentley purring through the game. Like Mooy, he's liable to silly little mess-ups which happen mostly when sitting deep with the ball for some reason (like v Everton where, under no pressure whatsoever he just fell on the floor on the ball and set them up to counter!) - but then you see the time and space he can create by the slightest of movements and the relaxed little threaded balls that nobody else is capable of making, and you realise the massive shame that we aren't going to see players like this anymore because of Brexit. The PL clubs are unlikely to pick up 2nd/3rd tier Spanish players. And we aren't allowed to I think the only sensible answer is we send a load of ladies (and men, or them) over to Spain to marry their decent footballers - so we can bring in some players that can actually understand CC and deliver the vision he has. For me... Nicholls Pearson - Sarr - Colwill Hogg Thomas - O'Brien - Vallejo - Toffolo Someone - Koroma is a team that is going to win more games than it loses. (aware I'm swapping Thomas...but he's two footed - and Toffolo + Koroma = Smith + Kachunga in terms of the threat, its a partnership that has to be maintained where possible). Happily start Sinani for O'Brien who doesn't really seem to have got going yet this season. Ignoring the current injuries, but imagine Thomas, Koroma and Toffolo causing their chaos for 60mins, tiring a defence (who have also been dominated by Pearson and Sarr at pretty much every set piece - boosted with Colwill, a player who reacts to Hoggy telling him he should have got his head on a corner, not by hiding away or ranting back, but simply by just deciding he's going to score next opportunity, and doing so! ), and then we bring on Rowe and his brand of physical enthusiasm to run through whatever is left...we don't have massive quality throughout the team, but we have the beginnings of an actual TEAM now, and one that could be vaguely entertaining to watch whilst sitting safely in the middle of the Championship, regularly bringing back 4/5 or 6 points from every set of 3 games....instead of an expectation of somewhere between 0 and 3. The immediate future seems relatively bright compared to the recent past.

Why anyone would call him a Rolls Royce or even dare to compare him with AM is absolutely beyond me.

If we play 3 at the back Hogg doesn’t fit because everything he does can be done by one of the 3 centre backs stepping forward.

If we play 3 at the back Hogg doesn’t fit because everything he does can be done by one of the 3 centre backs stepping forward. Opened up right down the middle a few times the other night. Hogg doing exactly what he is best at would have at least delayed that. Vallejo likes to play, likes to move around the central area, left us a bit light at times. Central midfielders who like to play, like to play on the turn etc is vital to how we look like we could be ok at but they will lose the ball or make a poor pass on occasions, need someone behind them, it's just what it is.. Hogg, Vallejo more forward and o brien doing the box to box? It might do better going forward or backwards... It's an option anyway.. Toffolo and koroma down one side and Sorba playing his game on the other with support coming up behind him but not getting in front of him? Its limited by what we have at full back but Rowe has the speed and the legs when fit? Has to be Campbell for me rather than ward to start for rather obvious reasons.. Back 4 of turton(Rowe when fit) Pearson, sarr, toffolo. Keeper picks himself.. 4 3 3 Nichols Turton(rowe) Pearson Sarr toffolo. Vallejo hogg o brien Sorba Campbell Sinani.. You could easily put colvil in at centre back and I'd be happy but I would not play him every game..play him often though..

Tight spaces - Mooy was excellent in tight spaces Vallejo is ok Tackling- Mooy loved a tackle, Vallejo has he made one? Goals - Mooy scored crucial goals for us Vallejo has he scored for us? Errors - Mooy was consistently a good player one of his best attributes, Vallejo yeah he slipped it happens but he makes numerous defensive errors Box to box - Mooy covered the whole pitch, Vallejo gets nose bleeds crossing the halfway line unless it’s a corner. Football brain- Mooy(just Mooy) I could go on but why, they aren’t comparable.

Mooy struggled badly in a team lacking confidence and legs and graft. I am not comparing him to anyone, it's pointless. He can play a bit and may do better in a better all round team, that's what the hope is.

Just to point out where I'm coming from, compare the raw stats of Vallejo v Mooy in the games where they played a full 90minutes for us at home versus Everton (a bit of a flawed comparison, but a comparison). The data is VERY similar.

I thought the discussion was Vallejo or Hogg? I think what some are saying is that this is, in some regards, is a much easier comparison at least. Even with stats against an Everton side, it's theoretical, whereas this debate is far more tangible at the moment.
Back on topic, for what it's worth, I think we can have a team with both Hogg and Vallejo in it. And I think Vallejo has a much bigger role to play. But we won't know if we don't give him more consistent game time!
(P.S. Id love to see both Mooy and Vallejo in a side right now!)
