It's almost like there should be somewhere else to discuss these issues, like, say, a politics board? A handy site that does discuss this stuff... you may not have heard of it atthemac.proboards.comSo rather than actively doing something you're actually encouraging people to post on a different forum and not use this one. Mind-boggling.

May have missed it somewhere on here, does anyone know the rules with the back pass stopping a goal/goal scoring opportunity? Can you be booked or sent off from a technical foul?

The first offence was handling a back pass, the second was denying a goal scoring opportunity for Rhodes. Yes he could have been sent off imo. If you commit a yellow card foul then headbutt the opponent you dont get a yellow then a red, the more serious offence is dealt with by a straight red. Handling a back pass just brings an indirect free kick so on this occasion the red is the serious offence of denying a goal scoring opportunity. Ref would not have been wrong for doing so because denying a goal scoring opportunity is totally 'in his opinion'.

Couldn't get to watch the game on TV unfortunately and I've only just seen the Sky highlights video so I'm not going to go into any detail, it must all have been covered in a 20+ page match thread. Great result, we have caught them as they are going through a poor run so perfect timing. They were comfortable against us in the game at Town so the away win is massive. I would have taken wins at QPR and home v Barnsley to be fairly sure of a playoff position and written off the Boro game so if we can beat Barnsley as well as Boro then we will finish top 6 no doubt. Shouldn't need anything from last 2. Not looked at who plays who in top 6 for final 3 games, a point on Fri might even guarantee a playoff spot?

Taken from the guidance on Law 12. "There is no “DOGSO” involved under any circumstances. In other words, if there is a “pass-back” offense, DOGSO is not an additional issue." You may not like it or agree with it, but thems the rules.

By the very nature of the offence, unless the keeper suffered a massive brain fart, the only reason they would handle a backpass would be to deny a goal scoring opportunity. It should at least be a direct free kick though. The chances of scoring an indirect with 11 men behind the ball like that is minimal.

Can’t see the point of the back pass rule if you are not punished for catching the ball indirect free kick with everyone in front of the goal is useless if it was only the two players involved Bamba and the goalie to defend the goal would be fairer

Fantastic performance and result yesterday - absolutely our best performance of the season. We carried so much threat when we broke that it was like watching a different team. If Sorba Thomas's injury is worse than hoped, a front two of Koroma and Rhodes showed they had something in the second half. Koroma needs a boost in his confidence, but he did more than enough yesterday to justify a shirt with his overall performance. As for Jordan Rhodes: welcome home properly. His finish was a typical Rhodes goal - one touch, instinctive, early, giving the keeper no chance. For all his knockers, he's still the best finisher we'll ever see. His all round game does lack, but yesterday he was outstanding all over. His defensive headers were vital, he set up one and scored another, and his hold-up play was very, very good, particularly when Koroma came on and he had players around him. Maybe he can play as a lone striker, when he has players coming to support him, rather than being an isolated figure as he has been on his last couple of starts. Think the three best finishers i've seen at town are Jordan Rhodes, Marcus Stewart, and Craig Maskell, im sure others will have their own opinions though. Jimmy Lawson was icy cool!

I didn’t think the players were far enough away, neither did the commentary. Anyone know what happens if the 10 yards takes the wall past the goal line? Do they stand in the goal?

Very difficult to score from an indirect free kick with eleven men less than 10 yards between you and the goal, surprised more teams don’t just pass it back deliberately. It should be a penalty to my mind.

It should be a penalty to my mind. Rhodes should have faked a shot and cut it left over to O’Brien whilst their team threw themselves at the incoming shot. It’s a shame for such a set piece savvy team we didn’t have something lined up. But it’s such a rarity to get an indirect free kick time is better spent mastering corners and direct free kicks.

I don't know why any team touches the ball for someone to smash at goal in these situations. Personally, I would just smash the ball at goal, it must be impossible for it not to go in without it hitting someone on the way.

if the back pass had been higher, and the keeper dived back and tipped it over the bar (say), would the ref have still have just given a free kick ? The rules say a keeper cannot handle a back pass, so when they do it's hand ball, surely ? The rules are too ambiguous.

No, it's a ridiculous rule that says they can't be sent off. If it's a situation where they can't use their hands they should be treated the same as outfield players (as they are outside the box)

Gabriel Batitstuta once blasted in an indirect from inside the box in a match against AC Milan and if the ball had hit someone on the head on the way in , they’d still be in a coma as we speak!! That’s how you do it!
