If it weren't so tragic it would be funny. We were crying, if not screaming out for a striker and we bring an injured one in from Ipswich that won'tbe available until December. The absolute dross in charge of transfers (and hiring head coaches) needs to go and get a job in another industry. His inability to read the room is laughable and now the consequences are showing on the pitch. 3 goals or not we are garbage Simpson was signed as "one for the future". In much the same way as Sorba Thomas was not ready at Christmas 2021. I'm not expecting great things from him this season even when he's back. Next season, maybe. The season after, I'm quite excited about. So whilst the team we beat in the play offs last season are signings one for now, we are signing ones for later whilst in the now we are scraping at the bottom of the division...now? Great transfer strategy

Ward is absolutely gutless up front. Clearances come straight back. Barely pretending to challenge. Totally anonymous for me all season , hiding in plain view , hold up play and overall involvement up front isn’t good enough I don’t know what his actual strengths are .

Had a good season last year, but struggling this time around. Hold up play has never been his strength, but the quality of service he gets is generally poor. Hopefully if Town's performances improve, his will too. We need to hope so, because we don't have many alternatives.

If we start with the back 4 we had in the 2nd half we win the game. Simple as that really. Im struggling to recall a centre back as calamitous as Mbete has been in his brief time at this club. Might be wrong but I make that 5 goals that you can put directly down to him already. He looks utterly out of his depth in every conceivable way. How he has got where he has at a club like Man City is beyond me. We obviously arent seeing the player they think they have. The first tonight shows a real lack of technique in how to defend that situation, The second just showed terrible physical weakness and the third showed terrible agility. Other than him it was a decent if scrappy performance against a tough opponent on their own patch. Well deserved point and in Jackson we've unearthed another good option. So IMO theres more positives than negatives to take back home after that. I completely agree, with Mbete I think he's the type of player if you watched in training and whilst playing in the City development squad he'd look like a world beater. That's why he's got as fas as he has at such a top club, but put him in first team football at a high level like the Championship and he falls to pieces. I can't see how we can continue to play him we can't take that risk, we've shown tonight that we do have fight in us we can't be giving those goals away.

Camara is excellent isn’t he? Kasumu played pretty well too and think he was left with little choice with the second foul. Thomas was better tonight too. Turton decent when he came on. Jackson did well enough. Holmes tried to get forward and create things. Those are the positives. Good point, but still a lot of work to do. Starting with Russell is literally the equivalent of starting a game with 10 men. He is utter garbage and needs to be loaned to Halifax where he belongs. Hes a youngster and you have to accept that some youngsters will have dramatic dips in form. he doesnt warrant a place in the team at the moment but we shouldnt write him off either. He showed enough from Xmas last season to see the lad has a lot of ability when he's on it. Camaras come in and looks the business, but chances are he'll have a dip in form too at some point.

Hes another one from our usual starting XI last season who isn't anywhere near the levels he had back then. Ward, Thomas, Russell and to a lesser degree Hogg, Lees and Nicholls. Thats over half the team that finished 3rd underperforming and why we have had such a poor start to this season.

Staggering how we let REG go on loan to bring Mbete in. Do we watch these loanees or just presume they are good based on which club they are signed up to. We can't afford such mistakes. It could be the case that Mbete just had the world's worst off-day, and he's actually a very good young defender... Problem is, in the position we find ourselves we can't afford to be the training wheels for players who aren't ready to step up to the professional game. At the very least he needs a few weeks in the b-team to get over this nightmare performance, and if his loan agreement means we have to give him a certain number of minutes then Bromby needs to have a good hard think about what he's done.

If that was his debut, maybe. But he's played before and looked nowhere near ready for men's football. As for being contractually obliged to play him, the consequences of leaving him out of the side would have to be pretty drastic for it not to be worth breaking that agreement. Or at least finding a loophole (e.g. bring him off the bench in stoppage time so he has an appearance to his name). For his own sake it can't be good for his confidence to be so utterly out of his depth. Playing him in first team football just looks like an act of cruelty. For the sake of all parties he needs sending back on New Years Day.

I’ll pick out the positives. The negatives are all too obvious.
Jackson - very solid first full game. Solid 7 The goal gets him a point extra.
Kamara- great pace and energy. Quick passing, odd misplaced pass late on - 7
Kasumu - see above. We will miss him next game. -7
Sorba - 3 assists and a much improved performance. -8
Holmes - when he finds space between the lines he much better. -7
Despite shooting ourselves three times we battled back for a point. As optimistic As I’ve been all season.
Maybe I’ve turned into a happy clapper. Possible ?

A great result really
Sloppy defending but this would have always been a tough game even if we were on top form....to score 3 goals wow...and to see some fight wow
I feel far more optimistic now after that

There was a story about Griezmann (I think), and how he has a threshold of minutes to play, beyond which they’ll have to pay his parent club a permanent fee, maybe another €40m or something.
I get that loan deals are done for various reasons nowadays, but I can’t remember this sort of condition being imposed prior to the PL days, or when the money went into hyperdrive. It’s symptomatic of the stranglehold the PL has on the EFL. Hoover up all the young talent, then loan out to EFL clubs on your terms.
Mbete may be a star in the making, but we all thought the same about Palmer & Brown, who to be fair are carving out reasonable careers, but neither of them for Chelsea. Mbete might be one of those who’s loaned out for the next 3 seasons and Man C will then cut their losses? (I get the irony of that last bit)
He just strikes me as a young kid who’s always got a mistake in him. He might need a different loan further down the leagues for him to find his feet.

Mbete is a young lad coming into an unsettled side and under his second manager since he arrived. Last season Pearson and Lees just clicked. With Hogg in front of them and Nichols having probably the season of his life so Colwill had a much easier introduction. He also had Toffs and O’Brien in front of him. I am not saying Mbete would be as good as Colwill in the same situation but he would have a lot more support. He is young and needs careful managing as he will be struggling for confidence now. He is not the first young player to be in this position but that doesn’t mean he is poor. Regarding Adebeyo, who missed a penalty against us last season, those were his first goals this season. Lees has as many as him and Rhodes has double that so try being a bit more balanced. Maybe not that ‘criminal’?

Man City produced Foden but also Duhaney. Coming from a big academy might mean you've got skill but it will probably mean you've missing out developing that physical side to your game. Even Colwill cost us a few goals last year when he got muscled off a cross that the striker headed in.

Personally I think the mistake was more in line with sending Critchlow out. REG is never going to get any time here on the left of a two or three whilst we have Lees (and Pearson) and Turton. Crichlow plays right where Mbete and Boyle do. I can understand taking a punt on Mbete, hes played ok in occasional mens games and had a good rep in PL2 games over a couple of seasons…he could easily have turned out to be another Colwill. But, it’s always a risk. Whats not a risk is deciding to sign a player like Boyle and releasing Crichlow. Two known quantities, and where the known is that Crichlow is already a better player than Boyle ever will be.

Boyle is the cheaper Sarr replacement, hoping he’s be good enough to start but also to throw on to defend balls into the box for the last 10 minutes when protecting a lead. Not sure why but the club don’t seem to rate Crichlow. I would have had him competing for that left sided centre back spot with Nakayama. He’s not that big though and I can see why they wanted Boyle in because we have a small defence and he’s 6”3. I say all that despite thinking Crichlow is a player and Boyle always looked a terrible signing!

Yeah, I guess so...although anyone can see that Boyle is not a patch on Sarr - he's tall but he has very limited physical presence. Height is not everything, look at Helik, he's probably the same height as Boyle, and so far he looks like probably one of the worst defensive headers of the ball in a Town kit I can remember, but, he has some obvious attributes to a team at this level, whereas I honestly can't really see any positives that Boyle brings when he takes to the pitch. I'm pretty sure keeping Sarr for another season (assuming he'd have signed a 1 year deal), and not signing Boyle *or* Mbete, we'd be in a better position today financially and points-wise (even though that would likely mean Schofield still in charge). Turton is probably close on half a foot shorter, and I'd bet on him aerially ahead of any of those centre halfs barring Lees 🤷♂️

A few thoughts re last night.
1. There was a forward momentum that we sometimes don't see. Although passes went astray the intent was there. As my 91 year-old father would say, "at least they had their arses facing the right way".
2. Turton is our best defender... always a 6/7. What a turnaround from this time last year. The defence really needs to be settled and that shouldn't include Mbete.
3. It goes in cycles, but we are now scoring from set pieces again. This is good. Scoring from a corner is a 2% chance. If we can increase this say to 10% then this is a big advantage, and this doesn't include free kicks into the area. Sorba Thomas has a big role to play here. Get into the minds of the opposition that we are set piece specialists to cause uncertainty.
4. Great to see these young players like Camara and Jackson being given a chance and taking it. Jackson is no worse than any of the players who have played in his position all season.
5. I don't know how we are going to fill the gap left by Hogg/Kasumu at the weekend.

Good to see that Foz reckons it's just something like where he wants to be..so more progress to come
"That team out there today and the style of play is something to get a little bit closer to what I want the team to identify with for the fans."
and who was Jones referring to ? .. "We wanted to be aggressive and we targeted certain areas and certain people."

I doubt Man City are going to be overly concerned about the financial terms of this loan deal... its Man City FFS! They will be concerned about the development of the player though and presuming they have people watching these games to follow their young 'stars' progress, then you would think the report back to Pep wont be a good one. Something along the lines of ' He's having a nightmare Pep. Can we get him back under our wings before all his confidence is totally shot to pieces?" They might not want us to play him anymore for that reason. As far as we're concerned the lad isn't usable. He's played 130 minutes for us spread over 4 games and id put him at fault for 5 goals conceded with terrible defending! Almost one every 25 minutes!! Im sure he cant really be THAT shit..he cant have got so far at Man City and England if he was,,, surely... but for us he is THAT shit. Weve got a lot of these young PL loans right over the past few years, but its always a gamble and like the lad from West Ham last season, this is one to forget.
