I’m not defending the council here, but maybe what was offered wasn’t in the best interests long term? If it has fallen down at this stage then it’s surely just situation normal, unless KN decides to try strong arm the council into some sort of deal? This is what I know as of late ‘23. Things may have progressed since and there’s no way at the moment I’d know. But should you be interested: Lots of local / regional politics involved in which key persons are acting in their own interests and, quite frankly, being arses (and that’s quite polite). You would think that, given they are on the brink of a section 114 report, and verging on bankruptcy, this would plan into their hands. They have instead gone about face and become more conservative for fear of mistakes. Also, devolution has made this harder, not easier. The majority of the public sector involved are, quite frankly, out of their depth. And slowing the process through simple bureaucracy. The council value the club significantly different to us. We’re not trying to rip them off. But they don’t agree with respect to condition of the stadium and associated maintenance fees and costs to update it. The Giants are also dragging their heels because they’re not as advanced in their own interests and want their cake but want to eat it and not contribute as little as they can in the meantime. KN was oversold the progress on the stadium and probably started negations with the wrong tone. We went in quite hard and with confidence and the Council, being public sector, didn’t understand it /get it. KN and team have not done anything wrong btw, it’s just cultural differences. They’ve tried to be very accommodating and personable. They’re learning but frustrated by the speed and tact of other parties. Either there’s a deal to be done or not. They're being very, very stubborn. And frustrations on both sides are growing.

You sound like you’re a lot closer to this than many on here?
Might be worth being careful about what you post on here if that’s the case.
For what it’s worth, for something like this, I’d have expected the Council to take external advice on this, so not surprised to hear that it might be a bit of a shambles if they’re having to keep costs in house.
I’m a Town fan, but would also want to see good value for the Council coming from any deal.

Don’t worry, I’m covering my and others’ arses with that post 😉 I’m happy with what I’ve said but I can’t go into specifics. And it comes with a big health warning (which I forgot to slap on it and will) which was what I heard last and that was towards the end of 23. I have no idea if progress has been made since. The issue in part is that the council have let an asset deteriorate and have mismanaged it since its inception in 94. The deal isn’t a bad one for the council by any means, but they’ve lost the context and perhaps getting greedy through desperation.

Let’s hope KN has some patience, I think he’ll need it.

Expect any deal to be incredibly slow and painful no doubt, even when it is in everyone’s best interests.

From what I have heard on the grapevine (to be totally honest it could be complete tosh) there are also complications down at the Stadium with the issue of the health club too. If you remember the entire project was built for the benefit of all of Kirklees not just Huddersfield. Council monies were channeled into its construction and maintenance. Yet because the stadium was not cheap to run monies were sought from the health club or at least they were expected to pay an exorbitant lease to KSDL which offset the costs of the football club. This agreement has now ended with no leasing money being paid to KSDL.
So, a new sports club sponsor is being sought who will pay up with the leasing. Unfortunately it has put off a couple of interested parties so far.
The whole situation requires someone to come in and act like the council did and pay over the odds for everything. I think it is unlikely to happen unless Kev decided to buy up the rights to the full ownership of the stadium with health club tagged on.

Can’t the government just pay for it and give it to us, like they did for West Ham?

Where is the old fartown ground? Turn left at Fartown Bar onto Spaines Road, the entrance is just as the road bends to the right. The ground was at the top of the slope beyond the cricket field.

Or you could do what we did as kids. Walk along Richmond avenue and climb over the wall, emerging from behind the scoreboard

A very windy town where everyone farts ! 😉 🗯 The supporters club bought a racehorse on the 90's and called it Fartowner. They had to rename it Claret & Gold cos someone at the Jockey Club read it as Fart-owner and not Far-towner.

Ha Ha Porroh - You’ve just cheered up ma old maw (almost 81 and who I’m currently visiting in Connel) as she likes to expel air and expel it anywhere no matter how loud !
Restaurants, weddings, funerals even if she was at The Royal Weeding she would.. well.. fart and FART BLOODY LOUD at that...
Other than that she is extremely ladylike and as timid as a church mouse -
One of the times that I was down for The Footy and staying in the centre of town (maybe The Huddersfield Hotel) and she asked what the weather was like and I said lovely and I’m just enjoying the views facing up to Fartown and she started giggling and let rip with an almighty one and nearly burst ma eardrums as the bloody mobi was on loudspeaker !!! 😬

Not sure they'd be successful in gaining planning permission for a rebuild on the old site. Likely to be lots of opposition from local residents; very few of whom are likely to have an interest in Rugby League, and the roads around there would be an absolute disaster if there was a high volume of traffic on a match day. Is there still a cricket club next door? Not sure what they'd use for car parking?

Agree, as unsuitable as the John Smith's is for them probably 95% of the time, it seems highly unlikely another stadium however small/appropriate for them would get planning permission less than a mile away.

Messaged my mate, that's a huge Fartown fan, to see if he'd heard anything. He said they'd been turned down for building one at Woodfield Park due to parking difficulties. Bloody good job, don't want them at the bottom of the road 🤣

Could they ground share with The Rugby Union team - maybe build a bigger stadium to help both teams or is The Rugby Union Stadium landlocked with housing etc... PS - Is that the one I see on the train going back to Manchester on the Monday afternoon after ma weekend in Huddersfield ! 👍
