I'm still trying to see where in the build-up play, any Equadorian was offside. It’s got to be one of the most literal interpretations of the offside rule there. What FIFA might not realise is how high they have now set the bar for VAR. Guaranteed there will be other goals given this tournament that will be more blatant than this one. Farcical FIFA… Interesting. I put the replay up from the Twitter feed of a stats guy twitter.com/statsjamieFifa threatened to suspend him for tweeting the video. He reckons it was due to TV rights. I'm not so sure. It has also disappeared from my post.

It’s obscene. Cue some folk talking about Hollywood actors… Ronaldo on £26m p/a. It’s bizarre in some respects, how they can negotiate such contracts without being laughed out of the room.

Qatar's performance was pretty embarrassing and the game went totally as I had thought it would. A difficult game to work out how good those teams are. Not sure that group will give you an indication of how far behind they actually are. Not the opener that FIFA and the Qatari leaders were hoping for.

I think the games in groups B, E, F, G & H are likely to be the most interesting group games to watch. But I also think it may get tedious with the amount of games. Can’t imagine what this tournament will be like for TV audiences with 48 teams in it. Football eating itself really. There are 32 teams in it just like all the most recent versions I considered a poll on your winning team options, but hopefully there will be another thread for that.

Why are Linekar, shearer etc actually in Qatar and how much of our licence fees is it costing for them to be there for the next month? I mean what did they do in that punditry that they couldn't have done sat in a studio in Manchester ?

You could see the wheels frantically turning in her brain as they both ended up looking like absolute hypocrites. Take the filthy oil money and talk to us about the football or stay at home and pontificate over human rights etc.

Interesting to see if Harry Kane wears his “one love” rainbow armband today with the supposed threat of a booking (which is ridiculous, of course). Do England stick to their principles and risk their captain and goalscorer being sent off (obviously he becomes a target with an early yellow card)? To me, why bother running the risk for a token protest? We’re taking part in it, so got to try to win it.

I appreciate there’s double standards Q’s here, but did you ask this when they all went to Brazil & other foreign world cups. Or is it another cheap shot at the BBC?

As I understand it FIFA have never given England permission to wear this armband so irrespective of my views on whether the World Cup should or should not be in Quatar if they don’t give permission then I don’t see a problem with a player being booked for wearing one.

ITV or Sky can fund what they like, but the BBC are spending tax money and needlessly sending an entourage of presenters, plus all the technical staff to these places is a scandalous waste of that tax money IMO. It adds NOTHING to the coverage that we wouldn't get if they were sat in a studio in Manchester. I remember a discussion on DATM from Brazil over the same thing. It isn't a cheap shot... its a glaringly obvious shot IMO.

Often seen on the liquid brunches.

The problem with FIFA over this is that they create their own grey areas. On one hand they have a rule that you cant make 'political statements' which this comes under... but on the other hand they produce their own political statements that players can wear. Like in this World Cup, FIFA have their own captains armbands calling for an end to discrimination, etc etc. Its like you cant wear yours but you can wear ours.

If any of them really cared they always had the option of not going. Same with the various FAs.. they had 12 years to organise a boycott if they were really so bothered about playing in an islamic country that had obviously bribed FIFA to host it. As none of them were prepared to do that, all this 'gesturing' now seems very hollow to me.

Or maybe they can learn from Boris and how he gets his trips funded??? Or better still. let's have a debate on tax avoidance and the biggest perpetrators of that? You can always stop paying your licence fee you know...

I completely missed the opening game, didn't even realise it was on - I think that summarises perfectly my interest in the World Cup.

Maybe they should all wear black armbands to signify the death of the integrity of football? Although to be fair, they could have done that a long time ago.
They could then wear the rainbow one to say it's adding a dash of colour.
If Kane does wear this and gets booked at the kick off, this would put the cat amongst the pigeons...
Not long to find out...

If Kane wears it and gets booked then my guess would be none of the other captains would wear it.
Virtue signalling is fine but if it comes at a cost they wont want to know.

Lol, FIFA have forced them all to backdown
No One Love armbands will be worn. Nothing like a bit of rubber backing.
Stop pretending you care. if you really cared, you'd take the booking and make FIFA look petty.
But like i said earlier, im happy for this. End all political gestures. Fingers crossed they book Kane for taking the knee as well

As I said further up, imagine if he ended up getting sent off and England failed to qualify or finished in second and faced a tougher team. It’s pointless now we decided to go.
