Get a solid base and use your superior attacking options. Southgate wants a solid defensive base with a solid defensive midfield and attackers to defend. He doesn't play to the strengths his squad have. You're right tbh, people (including myself) have said Southgate is the most successfull manager England have had in decades, statistically its correct but im sure things could be even better if we weren't as defensive minded, world cup semi and Euro final both instances where being a bit more daring 'might' have seen us go one better, i do actually think England are a good team, a semi and a final are proof of that, but being a be a bit more adventurous just might pay dividends. He has not learned his lessons from the Euros final, Italy deserved to win, as they were the only team to try & win it in extra time. The really defensive tactics have seen us through the last 4 & last 2 in recent tournaments but nobody remembers the endings happily, unlike the valiant loss in 90. This tournament is there for the taking, I don't feel there is an outstanding team but I think (& hope) the winners will be the bravest.

Gareth says our centre backs were great against the press. Ffs. I’ve joked they had a massive bet on the number of times they could pass it to each other. An analysis in today’s Times waxes lyrical about the number of passes completed by John Stones during the game, ignoring the fact that most of them were to Harry Maguire. The game seems to have been taken over by meaningless statistics. The only ones that count are goals scored and conceded and the number of points gained.

The press wasnt against the centre halves but the full backs and two midfielders. ? The squeeze was the middle third..

Southgate was annoyed after conceding two goals in a 6-2 win.
He was extremely pleased and satisfied after yesterday's bore draw.
Tells us all we need to know about his approach to football.

Ah well, not the best night at the office. All still to play for, happy days..... It's depressing to know you are equally as wet when it comes to England as you are when it comes to town. Cheer up buttercup, dry your sheets and smile....

Don't think Italy tried to win the Euro final in extra time as they were out on their feet. Suppose first and foremost we have to get out of the group.

Two changes for England that won't happen, because of Southgate's conservative stance, but: Big-nosed skate (Mount) replaced by Foden Trippier replaced by TAA.

England v USA, the England team took the knee and the USA team representing the country where the reason to do so started stood and watched.

Team tomorrow has to go for it in my eyes . Put down a marker and hammer a Welsh team that will be well up for it. Don’t meddle with defence though if that’s his preferred for further on.
Pickford
Trippier stones maguire shaw
Rice Bellingham Foden
Saka Kane Grealish

Henderson expected to start ahead of Bellingham Just seen that too. Un-fucking-believable 🙄 Maybe not. The Welsh will probably come out all guns blazing as they have to score a few. Contain them, then once they realise that they are not going to score the 4 goals they need. Bring on the likes of Foden and Bellingham to put the game to bed. A bit negative I know, but it's a game plan Southgate has used before

If Wales perform like they did against Iran we should see a comfortable victory , I can imagine this being a scrappy game though.

We should be concentrating on our own game and be humiliating them. Anything other than a comfortable win would be a bit worrying.

I’d like to see both sides playing open and free flowing , in which case we should be hammering them

It’s like Swindon playing Man City in the cup (I use those teams as examples as the respective squads have players from there). All the passionate pleas from celebrities and “being up for it” ultimately shouldn’t be a match for quality once the game gets underway. I hope, but doubt, Southgate isn’t sucked into this “difficult game” nonsense and tries to see out a draw.

If it actually looks like we have the same number of shirts on the pitch as wales then we will be fine. Workrate plus difference in quality throughout will do it, anything else and who knows???

Draw or winning it by a goal from a maguire header at a corner is a very difficult gameplan, its failed before. Cant quite remember the last game we went for, made chances and lost?, Remember all the games where we sat off, got a goal start and then backed off until we eventually lost.

Yep, also it could be the second leg, with Man C already 3 up, or a one off game with Man C starting at +3. If England do somehow screw this up, it will be one of the biggest cock-ups I've ever seen with the national team. I hope it's a decent watch though, and I do think that if England go a couple of goals up, I don't think the Wales team are likely to be kicking lumps out of England, as some sides would do in that situation. The Iran v USA game will probably be a more interesting game to watch.

"Wales have some amazing players, and to lose just 1-0 is testament to our resilience," says Southgate, after the game. England held on to ensure a place in the play-off stages after finishing the game with 10 defenders.

The BBC have been trying to big this game up, dont know why. There is literally no chance of Wales beating England by 4 goals.
