Well well well. If we do nothing else this season we've put the Deepdale hoodoo to bed Just the Derby one to go now 🙄 8 defeats and 1 draw between wins at Middlesbrough 1996 to 2022 11 defeats and 7 draws between wins at Preston 1969 to 2022 [At one time, around 2001, we were 6 defeats and 6 draws and it didn't begin to register as a bogey ground until we lost 5 in a row after that date. Yesterday makes up for that 2-1 defeat in 2016 under Wagner when we pummelled them until Nahki scored after 80 minutes and then Preston stole it with two very late goals. A young Will Boyle didn't cover himself with glory as a sub that day]. 21 defeats and 5 draws (and 3 of those from the last 4 visits) since last win at Derby 1957 to ? Our mother and father of (two) bogey grounds. At least we have won at the Baseball Ground. Town's most recent goal against Liverpool in any first-team game, including friendlies, was scored by Chris Balderstone in 1961. Will we score against them before we win at Pride Park? I don't expect to live to see either.

Probably already been mentioned but we saw the aftermath of at least 2 really bad multi car crashes on way back yesterday. Town fans or not, hope they are all ok.

I questioned my sanity before setting off yesterday. However, it was worth every second stuck in traffic there and back. What a win.
Preston are nothing special, like most of the league. In the first half they offered very little despite taking the lead. Between the boxes we showed enough but had no cutting edge and made an error at the back that let them in with their only shot on target. What was clear was we lacked the confidence to take risks. A few misplaced passes forward were all we really offered, and we didn't want to take pot-shots either.
In the second, we were improved without really threatening. We had a spell, they also had a spell where they should have doubled their lead, but when Diarra came on we changed the game. He did what we should have been doing all along (and, to give Holmes his due credit, he was doing) by running in behind, taking the game to them, giving us an outlet for more hopeful balls forward. And that's what brought the equaliser. Punt forward into a good area, behind the defence, Diarra running in behind, intelligent ball back, 1-1.
And at that point we were a changed team. Confidence is what is lacking in this side. We also lack a bit of pace and inspiration, but with our tails up we can push any side in the division. We were making the runs we've not made all season. We were making decisions in possession quickly while pressing high and winning it back. There was one moment when Rhodes, Holmes and Ruffels all pressed and we won it back in an area we haven't won it back in a long time, giving us a chance to get the ball into a dangerous area. Rhodes hit the post when we were committing men forward. We were putting the ball into the box far more quickly; twice Rhodes tried to knock deep balls back into the danger area with nobody lurking. And when Rudoni whipped that ball to the back post, I was pleased to see Kesler-Hayden coming onto the ball. He's had his critics (and I'm one of them) but he looked so much better yesterday afternoon.
One criticism I will make is that we're not quick enough to change things. Diarra came on when he should have done, but I'd have had Simpson and Jackson on at half-time. We weren't playing badly, but we did need a spark to make things happen in front of goal. We need to be more decisive with changes when needed.

That challenge was reckless and irresponsible in my opinion. It was daft, but only ever a booking. It got under Preston's skin a bit and after we've been bullied by them (all too often) in recent times it was a sign that Kasumu wasn't going to be bullied. Though had a red been produced (mostly as a result of Preston's theatrics) I'd share your view. I was annoyed at Hogg being booked though. Seemed very, very soft I have to say.

Simpson comes on: we look dangerous Diarra comes on: he transforms the game. I’ve said it all season - we’re not far off. Get another 1 or 2 players in (a la Ndlovu) and survival is very much on the cards. The thing i like about Diarra is the fact he just goes forwards every time he gets the ball, he dosnt know any other way, not everything he tries comes off but hes dead positive and puts the opposition on the back foot, we dont have many players like this so its vital hes used.

That challenge was reckless and irresponsible in my opinion. Ledson was the bloke who ended Tommy Elphick's career. Well done, Kasumu - he had it coming. Also of note: same referee, Geoff Eltringham - he owed us for that Ledson challenge back in November 2019, hence Kasumu escaped a red. Well, perhaps Eltringham didn't intend it like that, but it was a bit of football karma. Examiner Nov 2019 link - ref watch

For Tommy Elphick's sake it was real shame that Kasumu didn't do the job properly.

That's exactly it, we are so negative that the default move is to receive the ball & immediately the first thought is pass it back, we have to keep possession at all costs, though, in reality, we pass it square or backwards 3 times, then hoof it forward. Diarra is a breath of fresh air.

Reflecting on the strange phenomenon of confidence. Looked scared to try anything all over the pitch for 70 minutes (as you woukd expect in our position) then a few things started coming off, diarra frightened them (although if I was their manager I'd have proper bollocked cunningham for being soft as shit) and we got the goal.
Then suddenly the passing worked, the movement increased and we genuinely had too much for them.
It's not as easy to ask why we just didn't start like that as, without the confidence, it wouldn't have been as effective.
Kesler-hayden a perfect example....tentative before, then after the goal looked a proper player. Not surprising as a lot of younger players need that confidence boost, especially as they are trying to make their way. Diarra again....in a cameo given licence...beat a couple straight away and you coyld see him visibly grow whereas against Watford he shrank as they shackled him.
Unexpected but welcome first step....this league is truly average this season....vital to follow up on Thursday and get back I the pack.
Last word....the value of Rhodes. Battled hard but didn't achieve much but one (not much more than half) chance and one goal. Crucial to have someone like that as if that didn't go in right then we lose that game

Probably already been mentioned but we saw the aftermath of at least 2 really bad multi car crashes on way back yesterday. Town fans or not, hope they are all ok. Shocking driving conditions in both directions. One second a damp road surface doing 70mph... then an inch of snow on the motorway without any warning... bloke in outside lane doing 90 stood no chance and cleared a couple of cars up around me for good measure, fortunately it didn't look too serious for those involved and relatively mild glances off each other... but scary all the same. Young lad who ran across 3 lanes of traffic in plimsolls to get numbers off the other drivers in an inch of snow was a lucky boy....

That said, nice to get away with one. We don't seem to very often.

The old finger to the lips from KKH after his goal. Come on lad, it'll take far more than a fortunate bundled in goal for you to be able to shush the fans. Some of these players need to realise how lucky they are to have been playing this poorly and had almost zero stick at matches. They would have been getting absolute pelters at most clubs. Yes they receive some on social media but it's their choice to read it. I'm still hoping he's sent on his way in January as he is simply not good enough yet for this level. Give the lad a rest. He played well yesterday, we need to get behind the lads now, they put a shift in we back them to the hilt.

Partly because you'll then realise it was a stonewall red card foul all day. Mostly though because it's an absolutely beautiful bit of karma on the dirty bastard.

Jeremy Simpson - What have we done to keep getting this idiot all the time. Only saving grace he is 4th official again for PNE and not in charge of the whistle. Then lo and behold we get him for Rotherham with the bloody whistle. Christ, we've got Jeremy Simpson tomorrow night.
