I'm always wary of signing loan players, they seldom recreate the form of their loan spells and they usually end up as a disappointment. Danny Ward, Paul Rachubka, Adam Hammill, Terence Kongolo and Carel Eiting are a few examples off the top of my head. Sure there'll be more. Obviously Aaron Mooy was one that was successful, but I think he's the exception. Ward, Rachubka, Mbenza 🤣 TBF, Mbenza was better when we signed him permanently than when he was on loan. Which is a bit like saying that being hung, drawn and quartered is better than scaphism.

The joys of expectation management. I'd actually be quite happy if we brought Hoilett in now. Is that their plan, to leave it so late in the window we will be so desperate as to accept anything. If so, it's a better plan than "Warnock will weave his magic no matter what hand he's dealt". We currently need a striker, a couple of central midfielders and a right winger. Hoilett would be a "Dean Whitehead role on the wing" version (i.e. ok to step in now and again and a good influence in the dressing room), which is better than the nothing that I'm expecting for that position.

I can think of Mooy, Vaughan, Abbott, van la Parra, and Mbenza. One is not like the others! I'm sure there's more examples but it's a much shorter list than the ones that didn't work
