Was going to chat about this in the AB thread but realised it’s a bit off topic in that thread.
Where does this phrase come from and when did it start?
Clearly Huddersfield as a town is not ‘little’ Fair enough it’s not the biggest town in West Yorkshire or Yorkshire, but in a list of 1000 English towns and cities it’s in the Top 50, so a top 5% town…..therefore actually a ‘big town’
Honours wise across the entire football pyramid we’ve won the title (three times!) and been in the top two divisions a good chunk of our history, so looking at all teams we aren’t a ‘small team’
Could it be the dog???
The terrier?
A small and yappy little thing?
Is the small town / club tag a false association because of that?

It came from Wagner probably because he wanted to big up his achievements at the club and get yet another pay rise out of Hoyle.

We had 25 successive seasons in the top flight which is the joint 15th highest (shared with Portsmouth).

It was Wagner, some fans, and the media in our promotion season.
With Wagner it started off as this galvanising 'terrier spirit is when the small dog fights the big dogs' or whatever it was. The fans and media bought into that, and the narrative was compounded by us having one of the smallest budgets in the championship that season.
Then Wagner arguably took it too far once we'd been promoted, repeatedly telling the world we were a small club in a big league to take the pressure off.
When we almost went up again a couple of years ago, that narrative was nowhere to be seen to be fair. The new ownership seem intent on changing the remnants of that culture. Maybe today's another stage in the death of the little old Huddersfield myth, here's hoping.

Only stat you need is that out of 116 years, Town have spent 86 in the top two tiers. Never, ever seen a little club.

We were the first to win the league three times in a row. One of the first powerhouses in English football. We will never be a “little “ club.
Imagine if the European cup had been around in the 1920’s we may have won some of those as well.

The club hasn't done anything worthwhile on the pitch for donkeys years. After falling out of the old First Division in 1956 the club was in the wilderness for sixty years albeit with a couple of seasons back in the top flight 1970-72. Those sixty years represent many people's lifetimes and they simply wouldn't associate the club in that time with their successes of the 1920s. Still the same now - talk to any footy non-Town fan and all that they'll know about HTAFC is that they were tiny fish who won the Play-offs, went up with a negative goal difference and then stank the place out in 2018-19. Nothing whatsoever to do with the place itself.

I don't know what's more annoying, the fans/coaches/directors who play up to the "little old Huddersfield" trope...
Or the fans who over-analyze every interview, press-conference or statement from the club looking for anything at all the might hint at acknowledgement that we aren't Real Madrid so they can get wound up and defensive about it.
Actually yes I do, the second one is way more annoying. Yes, occasionally various coaches and people from the media side have over-egged the "underdog" thing, and it can get a bit tiresome... but that's nothing compared to daft posts from people with a Napoleon-by-proxy Complex who second guess every statement that ever comes out of the club.
We have a history in terms of achievements that few of the 91 other league clubs can match, this is true. We also unsurprisingly struggle in this day and age to compete with big city clubs like those from Manchester and Liverpool, or those owned by sovereign wealth funds and/or in receipt of parachute money. This is also true.
Just get behind André and the lads, everything else is just background noise.

That was said after Foriesteri missed the penalty at Hillsborough. Certainly the perennial strugglers line. With the 4 syllables in that word, I think Ward had run 30 yds in the time he said it…

Are L***s a little club?
Our records are virtually the same and as stated above when we won the league there was no European Cups to go for.
